Finally got a chance to get out with the dog for some pheasants today! Pathetic I know , but between juggling work and the weather and everything else its hard to find the time .
Anyway , loaded up the kit , gun , cartridges , whistle etc. Stuck on the dogbox and loaded up my 18 month old GSP for his first hunting trip on the phezzies .
Tried a couple of the usual spots , the dog was working well and covering the ground non stop so I was happy enough even though there were no birds on show .
ANyways , onwards to another large field of heavy rushes and heavy ditches . Only crossed into it , when the dog was off again scenting and trailling and within 30 seconds he flushed a good sized rooster from the base of a tree , saw him late and I rushed the first shot, Missed but steadied enough to put a few grains from the 36g 5 into him with the second shot. Turned him in the air but he glided off into the next field and over a hedge into heavy grass cover.
Out we went in search of our prize and it wasn't long till AJ was on the trail , he tore off after the runner over a little hill and when I got over to him he was holding on point . I walked in to see where the bird was and could'nt find it . The dog was firmly fixed on something , hmmmmm.
So I walked in on the dogs line of sight to within a yard of his nose and low and behold there was our rooster buried in the grass a foot fron the dog ! I reached down to pick him and he tries to do a runner , but the pooch put a stop to that , grabbing him by his TAIL !
The fecker pulled the tail off the fine cock and as I picked him up , the dog sat there with a mouth full of feathers and a guilty look on his face !
Ah well , he nearly got it 100 percent first time out .
    There's always next time :D

    Here's a pick of our Hero/Villan!

Reminds me off a story bout the father to my springer/lab cross.

He's a superb stalking dog and his owner wounded a sika stag which the dog duly tracked up and held at bay, owner duly takes his shot to finish him off and misses completely !!

Stag takes off with dog in hot pursuit, this time he grabs him by the unmentionables and doesnt let go until the deer is stone dead !! As if he said " I gave you one chance to shoot him, not chasing the bloody animal for a 3rd time !! " :D

He's some boyo alright , The stories I could tell ya about that lad . From getting me thrown out of housing estates to teaching him to swim he's full of personality alright!
I must say they're an extremely intelligent breed , he even stands on his back legs and pisses out through the mesh of his pen as not to dirty it! Won't be bothered retrieving a dummy or a ball but will retrieve rabbits or duck all day . He's way too smart for his own good.
I actually got that dog for free , as part of a deal I did with a guy for work He's pure bred non reg and I got the pick of the litter for giving a lad a good price on a garage door!!
Right time and in the right place I suppose !!:D:D:D

A beautiful dog. I had a pointer like him years ago. He was a very good dog. I changed to springers and love them, but seeing your picture and reading your story is triggering something in me to get another one again..
Best of Luck with the dog and hope you have a good season.
