lads, i had a disaster today, 3 cocks are happily roosting tonight, i missed 3 sitters, 2 were left to right crossers and one was coming right over me, i dunno what happened to me i just missed- i can't blame the dogs- they did their best, in fact the three were put on a plate for me, i can't explain it, maybe i have a problem with left to right crossers but i dunno about the incoming one- all i can say is that my confidence was very low after missing the first 2, :o
by the way i got a nice woodcock first thing this morning

    has anyone any advice????

Probably just one of those day's:p every one has them, and nothing can explain them. Everybody has an off day, even the dogs.

ya eridax i'm right handed, and left eye dominant, but that isn't much of a problem- i just close the left eye;)

    why you ask?

I'm right handed and right eye dominant. Even with your left eye dominance you put the gun to your right shoulder.

I had the same problem as yourself. Right to left crossers not a problem. Left to right and i found i was firing behind them all the time. Not sure of the exact nature of the problem, but in my case my natural body position and right "handedness" meant it was a more natural swing/turn of the shotgun from right to left while staying on target and firing the appropriate distance ahead to hit my target.

Firing at left to right crossers and using the right eye i found the shotgun to "block out" the target so when i got it "in my sights" i pulled the trigger and snapped the shot and usually behind the bird.

Pratice got me there, but in all honesty i still miss the few. Also i tried getting into the habit of holding the gun differently. I would have the gun half shouldered until i was ahead of the bird then fully shoulder and fire. It was much of a muchness in success terms.

I hope that is somewhat understandable. There is also the case of a crap day. We all have them. Had my share of them too. Quick story. Out shooting with a mate a while back. Bird comes in and i miss with both barrels. he dops it with the first shot. This goes on for about 25 minutes. I turn to my mate and tell him i'm not shooting that the new cartridges are not good. I ask him what ones he is using as they are the business. He tells me he forgot to bring his belt and took a box of the ones i was using from the jeep.

I sat down and had a smoke. One of those Hamlet cigar moments. :D:o

a vastly experienced game shooter once told me that 'you never miss birds in front'. in other words a miss is 99% of the time behind the bird. give more lead on the bird, even if it looks like too much.

The best advice I could give you is to slow down. I have the same problem at the start of the season bird gets up, bang and I miss. I think the Americans call it buck fever or something.
