Scientology-should it be destroyed?

I have nothing against religions, or people practising them in their own time, but lately been doing alot of reading and research on Scientology and WOW, some shocking stuff.

If you dont know what Scientology is about, basically its an organisation that is based around the belief that 75 billion years an evil overlord called Xenu ruled over the universe, the universe he found overpopulated so he decided to banish mass amounts of the beings from different planets to earth via ships that resemble with we would now deem airplane. They were then placed in volcanoes and blown up with H bombs and their spirits flew to earth taking host in humans.
And these spirits known as 'thetans' embody everything negative in our lives, and to get yourself sorted you need Scientology which through 'auditing' were you hold two tin cans while a little dial goes up and down indicating how your 'thetan' is reacting to questions your being asked.

This mad sh*t was made up by L Ron Hubbard, a science fiction writer(duh) who claimed to be a war hero and a whole host of other tremendous things that all turned out to be bullsh*t, and he died in hiding, wanted for fraud of 200 million.

Now the 'church' has a following of 10 million its believed, and they basically operate like a cult, take in impressionable people, take all their money and make them give all their time to the 'church', they are told to 'disconnect' which means they must cut out anyone that isnt into scientology this includes friends and family. you only get told the Xenu, thetan alien story when you fork out over 500 grand, until then your on the bridge to 'clear' which is suppose to give you super powers(I swear this is for real Im not spoofing)

They are well known for harrassing, intimidating, threatening anyone that disagrees or critisises them, they usually use their high priced legal eagles to sue anyone into oblivion but they will use other methods if need be, and people have turned up dead.

Basically the overall goal of Scientology is world domination, thankfully I dont think we are all that stupid to be taken in by blown up volcano demons, the other far fetched yet more acceptable religions do us

Should Scientology be destroyed, it is dangerous afterall to ones health

Sounds more believable than some of the crap that has been forced down my throat by another organisation who also crave world dominance!

No massacres or wars in the name of Xenu that i have heard about either

The thread title makes it sound like Scientology is an old tv or something.

But sure yeah, it should be destroyed.

    Eville personified.

Needs to be eradicated. I know we're not all stupid enough to join but doesn't mean it couldn't get powerful enough to affect us.

    Smash it.

There will always be stupid people with a lot of money. Scientology therefore can't be destroyed.

It really isn't something just to be laughed at. I'd love to see Ireland ban the organisation from 'trading' here

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Snow_White

No enemy at war with the US have managed to even almost equal that.

You can heal people when you get there . You also have the right to jump up and down on a sofa on a talk show of your choice professing your love for someone. Good value when you think of it.:D

Here are a few deaths related to Scientology.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deaths_related_to_Scientology

They should probably add John Travolta's son who died recently in the Bahamas after he allegedly suffered a seizure and hit his head in the bath.

I'm sick people mocking scientology just because the origin story seems fanciful.

Next people are gonna try convince me that the events retold in the Star Wars movies never really happened.

Is their objective of worship less than others? Perhaps given it is money and pwoer this frightens many incluing myself but what of freedom of speech etc ... why shouldn't they have religious / belief based freedoms? Yes I realise their methods and PR workers are objectionable - given christian failings (and more specific catholic in this country) whats the problem with greedy people creating a church based upon greed and alien faith based propositions that can't be disproved?

i don't see why it should be banned, people voluntarily join, its their fault for giving up their money to Scientology.

it's not my business if somebody joins the church so why should i care?

    Kirste Alley
    Anne Archer
    Beck
    Sonny Bono
    Nancy Cartwright(voice of Bart)
    Peaches Geldof
    Jenna Elfman
    Issac Hayes
    Katie Holmes
    Jason Lee(my name is earl)
    Juilette Lewis
    Priscilla Presley
    Lisa Marie Presley
    Kelly Preston
    Giovanni Ribisi
    John Travolta

To name but a few, they target celebs in the hope of getting fans interested in the religion. Celebs love it because the business provides free weekend luxury retreats with free labour from the ordinary followers.

Many people have died (been murdered?) because of Scientology and it's practices. I think that's enough to warrant an outright ban on the cult.

I dont see why people are so quick to condemn scientology yet sit in a church on sundays worshipping a space magician who sent his son who is also himself to die for sins that he created us with to begin with to save us from himself and become a jewish zombie, its just as nonsensical, the church is a moneymaking organisation as well, or was the vatican built on prayers?

how many millions have been murdered, killed, stoned, burned at the stake, hung, poisoned themselves etc etc in the name of christianity and other religions

i have yet to see a crazed scientologist blow themselves or explode a car bomb in the middle of a busy town

Wikipedia 101 - When you scroll down to the bottom of the article, you will find a long list of references used to write the article. Most, if not all, of the references come from mainstream media outlets.

It's all just different forms of insanity.

It pisses me off when people decry Wikipedia as something you shouldnt use as a source, its still the greatest resource on the net for information.

clearly space warlords and aliens is nonsense, but a zombie jew and talking snake and virgin birth and all that? well sure thats completely plausible.

No, Scientology is far more preferable than almost all major religions.

Name one religion that forces it's members to refuse modern medical treatment. Most, if not all mainstream religions are fairly moderate with a minority of extremists. Scientology is an extreme cult led by extremists. You just can't compare Scientology with any other mainstream religion. It's a dangerous cult led by sociopaths and lunatics.

I don't disagree with that, it is a great resource for information. The problem is that a lot of people take the information on the wiki page at face value and don't actually click on the links to see where the information actually comes from.

Very true, but this "wikipedia, pffft sure anyone can edit that" attitude is just stupid, any stupid edits are quickly dealt with and the majority of whats on there is sourced from reputable publications or historians or whatever.

One has tenure, the other doesn't. Simple as that. Also worth noting that for all the harm the RC Church does they do also do some good, a claim I'm not sure can be made of Scientology.
