Which Nightforce

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting a Nightforce. It will be going on a .308, mostly for target work. Furthest I shoot at moment is around 500m.

For reticle choice I like the look of NP-R2. For the actual scope It's down to either the NXS 5.5-22x56 or 8-32x56.

I know some of you use these scopes and I'd be interested to hear any recommendations. How do they compare to the likes of Swarovski or Zeiss - which seem to be available for around the same price?

I have had 4 Nightforce scopes t date. The Nightforce comes in 2 models. The NXS and the BenchRest.

    NXS Model

For tube size, lens adjustment, magnification, design, etc they are identical in features. The differences are subtle, but there. For example the NXS has a parallex adjustment of the side in the shape of an extra turret while the BR has the parallex on the housing of the objective lens. The NXS adjustment is very fine and takes adjustment at every different range you shoot. The BR model with its ranging/parallex is not as fussy. Draw back is the NXS model is easier to reach and adjust while shooting, the BR model needs you to get up and reach forward to adjust then resettle and check if its enough.

The only other difference is the NXS models come in 1/4 click value as opposed to the 1/8 click value of the BR. Handy for target work as they allow finer adjustments at the longer distances.

I would recommend the 8-32x56 in BR. Reticle choice is something personal, but the NP-R2 ............

.............. is most common and works the best. Avoid the NP-R1 ...............

.............. as there are too many hash marks. Unnecessary IMO. With 2MOA value per ranging mark on the crosshairs (vertical) and 5MOA on the horizontal they provide alot of hold, but only work on 22 power. If target work is your primary use then ranging marks on a crosshair are not entirely necessary. You will most likely be using the higher mag and so the marks will not be accurate after 22 power. The other option is the target mil-dot. Crosshairs with circular, hollow dots and a finer dot in the centre. I use this version myself.

My Father only recently swapped his 12-42x56 NXS for an 8-32x56 NXS as he wanted more MOA which the 12-42 did not provide.

EDIT - The NS model also costs more than the BR. Not a huge amount.
