    Of those, the Insignia.

Avensis is just so dull. Passat was never a great drive, last one wasn't very reliable or nice inside, and the new one is ugly, too.

What's the budget or spec you are allowed? Much depends on that I'd say.

Rep spec Insignia's are horrid inside.

I'd take Avensis or Passat everytime if it wasn't my own money

    Mondeo 2,5T ;)

    Insignia SE or Elite Spec.

Better car all round than the Avensis or the B6 Passat (B7 is really a facelift of the B6, so can't be that much improved). Better car even than the Mondeo.

If you want to carry people in the back, the Mondeo is bigger back there.

Going only on the car my mate bought in March i would say Insignia.

Not sure of the exact model, but it has loads of features and can go like hell. Haven't sat in or tried the other two so no idea on them.

Not the passat as the engine is too small.

I'd probably go insignia, but if both are base spec then the avensis wouldn't be too bad.
Drive both and see what you think.

Are there no more options? Like a smaller high spec car?

Looking at the specs from the review in todays Irish Times I'd go with the Passat, that is ofcourse provided the spec mentioned appears in the Irish models.

You can take it that base spec passat will be as well specced and powered as a Tesco value microwave.

If you're not worried about selling it on them why bother with a 1.6 litre basic yoke

Unfortunately most rep spec models on Irish road usually look like this:

Spec will be the basic I'm sure. All info I have is:

    Toyota Avensis 2.0D4D Terra
    VW Passat 1.6Tdi Bluemotion

If it's purely the base model, is the Mondeo excluded? Would be the one to take in base as even the Style model gets Alloys, MFSW, colour coded handles, fog lights and Bluetooth.

Base model Insignia isn't a great place to be, but has decent seats and a MFSW. It's the nasty hub caps that let it down.

The last of the old model Passat Trendline were OK, had Arm rest and MFSW but was missing alloys. Don't think the new one will carry over the MFSW or Armrest. At least the seats were good - I prefered them to the Comfortline seats.

Don't think I've been in a Terra model of the current Avensis (thankfully).

Probably still take the Insignia over the Passat (1.6Tdi is a bit dead) or the Avensis (steering too light and interior a bit dull).

Any chance you could spec the Plus pack on an Insignia S? €699 and adds 17" Alloys and Fog Lights.

A basic anything is pretty grim, so you'd need to be sure which one you are getting. I really like the Insignia, but only on the right wheels and with the right spec.

Passat is ok, but the 1.6 TDI is only really 'adequate' - you need a 140hp 2.0 TDi to feel anyway rewarded.

Avensis is too dreary to contemplate unless you are a Garda and now have no choice.

Avensis terra is pretty much the same spec as the old model aura. Has mfsw and armrest.
No Bluetooth alloys Fogs etc though.

I've been in a Strata model and that feels feels very cheap and basic inside, so I can only imagine how bad the Terra(ble) model is.

I can't say I'd be in a hurry to choose a Passat with just the 1.6 TDI engine though either, the 2011 model is more or less the same as the car that's been on sale since 2005 and runs the Renault Laguna II close in terms of which family car of the 00s was the worst made.

A Mondeo Style is well equipped for an entry level model and will be available with a 2.0 engine so it should have decent enough go(it's still in band B).

Am leaning towards the Insignia but think it will be basic spec. Anyone know if that includes armrest?

    Thanks

Any base S models I have seen on carzone.ie have front arm rests but you can check here:
