Okay to follow up on my original idea for a league in this thread I'm gonna try get this league going.

How it's going to work is as follows:

I'm going to leave signups open for around two weeks or so to see what kind of numbers we'll get to work with, with the hope of having the league up and running in 3 or 4 weeks. Once signup numbers are finalised, I'll separate all the players into 3 groups going by their league & points. Each team will be made up of one player from each of these groups, ideally this will be a random player from each group but if the skill range is too wide I may seed a little to try keep things as interesting as possible.

Once the teams are chosen each team will be matched up with another and have a week to play all their matches. There will be three different map cycles starting with the first in gameweek 1 and rotating from there. When you have found out which team you are playing against you will nominate each of your players for one of the 1v1 maps in the cycle and two of your three for the 2v2 (this is a fun thing, nothing serious, so if everyone in your team wants to be in the 2v2s sort out some sort of rotation please!). These players are nominated to a neutral admin blindly and then once each players have been nominated for each game the admin will tell you who is playing who in the team battle this week. Each game will be a best of 1 set match. A win in your bo1 gives your team 1 point in the overall score between the teams. For example, Team A are playing Team B, Team A win two 1v1s and the 2v2, Team B winning just one 1v1, the overall score is 3-1 giving the win this week to Team A.

A win for your team awards you 3 points in the league, 1 for a draw and none for a loss.

Once every team has played each other once the league standings will become the seeds to a tournament bracket. These playoffs will decide the overall winner. The format in the playoffs will be the same as in the standard league except each match will be bo3 rather than bo1, with the loser of each set choosing the next map in each match. In the case of a draw map difference will be taken into account, and if the teams remain drawn after map difference there'll be a 'last man standing' team elimination match. This works by the teams nominating one player each to play a 1v1 against the other. Basically it's winner stays on for each team until one team has no players left. When it gets to the playoffs I'm going to try get more than one match a week out of the way to try get the tournament finished up but that's not set in stone yet, we'll see how it goes.

    The three map cycles are:
    • Map Cycle 1: Lost Temple(1v1), Steppes of War(1v1), Jungle Basin(1v1), Tempest(2v2)
    • Map Cycle 2: Metalopolis(1v1), Scrap Station(1v1), Xel'Naga Caverns(1v1), Monylth Ridge(2v2)
    • Map Cycle 3: Shakuras Plateau(1v1), Blistering Sands(1v1), Delta Quadrant(1v1), Discord IV(2v2)

I'm open to feedback on the layout of the map cycles, I tried to have a decent mix of map types in each week. I won't switch out any of the 1v1 maps for others but if people think the combinations should be changed a bit I'm open to suggestions. I chose three 2v2 maps that I felt were some of the better ones but again I'm open to suggestions for other 2v2 maps to be included instead if the consensus is to use some maps other than these.

    Sign Up:
To sign up just leave your name and ID here and in a couple of weeks, providing there's enough numbers, I'll contact you in bnet about what team your on and make another thread announcing all the teams. If you have friends who aren't on boards feel free to sign them up, but bear in mind this will go on for at least a good few weeks so try keep it to people you can contact and will be relatively dependable. There's undoubtedly gonna be some players who dropout along the way but I'd really like to keep it at a minimum :P In these cases I'll do my best to find substitutes or allow a player to play two games in a gameweek until a replacement's been found.

Alternatively you can contact us by e-mail at BIE.SC2.L(at)gmail.com or on battle net when we're online at Funky.793 / Furyio.731.

For the moment I'm planning on just keeping track of the league using a publicly viewable google spreadsheet. Most of the communication will be done through threads here (a little tournament sub-forum would be great if this takes off but not necessary :P), on the IRC channel #starcraft.ie on Quakenet and through battle net too if necessary.

Remember the aim of this is just for fun and give people a little bit more incentive/interest in improving their games other than just playing ladder over and over. So please don't hesitate to sign up if you've any interest at all.

Finally if anyone's interested in helping out or has any ideas in general regarding this feel free to drop myself or TheDoc a PM. I'm hoping most of the organisation regarding who plays when can be done by the players themselves but I'm sure plenty of things will popup that I might have trouble with dealing with myself. A couple of admins would certainly help too. If there are any questions go ahead and post here or PM me or TheDoc.

And the league name is subject to change, feel free to suggest stuff 8)

    love the title :)

Sorry to sound a negative note, but as these things are notoriously hard to finish, would a plain old 1v1 league not be better?

Also, whats the requirements for team entry, all have to be irish? at least 1 member? etc etc

Yea I know it's quite a big thing to try straight off but I thought there might be more interest for something along these lines as people in lower leagues might be pretty hesitant in entering a 1v1 league by themselves. In this you should have a good chance of getting even matches more often and there's also a 2v2 game a week where the stress isn't quite as high as a 1v1 :P

It's going to be random teams for the first season just so it's not dominated by a team of diamonds, it'll probably go to premade teams in following seasons providing the league doesn't fail horribly. No nationality requirements. The idea is to help get a bit more of an Irish community going but the more the merrier really.

Maybe leave it as a normal thread till it starts dropping down the forum a bit. Dunno bout other people but I often overlook stickied threads when randomly browsing ^^

No such problem from me - don't touch WoW, can't stand it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,997 ✭✭✭Grimebox

I haven't touched WoW because I'd say I would love it and it would consume me. If south park has taught me anything, its to stay away from WoW.

Surely you can take time out once or twice a week dustaz!

i got heavily addicted to phantasy star universe on the xbox.... so if i went near WoW, i would probably never see the light of day again.

It will have an effect on sc2, mark my words:)

Ex-WoW addict, so going to be trying my best to stay away from the new expansion. It looks damn good though. :/

I still love wow and leveling 1-60 back in vanilla and the southshore v tarren mill, and getting ready for 40 mans etc was probably the most enjoyment I have ever got out of a video game. I just play now whenever theres new content and I will probably play cata for a while but it will still be second to sc2, sc2 is perfect if dont have alot of time to game, can just jump on and jump off whenever.

Pretty much my thinking. It's hard to square WoW with a wife and two young kids. It just requires too much time to play at a high level. Raiding was one of the most enjoyable game experiences I've had but putting aside 4 hour slots of time twice to three times a week during "Prime Time" for getting kids to sleep just wasn't workable.

Bumpity, have 17 signups so far. Hoping for around 24 but it looks like we have enough to run this either way. Gonna close signups on the 9th of November and post up the teams in the next couple of days after.
