Hi. Im shooting clay targets for about 6 months now and have passed the 'beginners' stage (i hope!). Im interested in what chokes to use for the the different clay disciplines. I shoot sporting mainly and have a Winchester Slect Sporting gun, however i am branching out into DTL and have also given ABT a go. Is it possible to use my Sporting gun (successfully) with with certain chokes for DTL/ABT? Tips and advice would be much appreciated.

    Terry

    If you've an O/U I reckon DTL 3/4 & full

    Semiauto I reckon 3/4

    ABT same

Don't get too hung up on chokes. If the gun fits you, you'll be fine.
As a guide, you'll get away with 1/2 & 3/4 for DTL and I'd use 3/4 & Full for ABT or OT.
BTW, I'd always use full & full for practice.

Cheers. I was thinkin, would it not be ideal to have a full and full for OT or ABT when competing aswell?

    ..
That depends on your own frame of mind really. The slightly more open 3/4 choke in the bottom barrel will give you a bit more leeway on the closer (first) shot. However you do get much more feedback using full and full, and more satisfaction with better kills :).

Most surprising thing about the replies you recieved is that Nobody advised you to change to a specialist Trap gun.
This is great IMO as your Sporter is more than sufficient to do the job.
It may place the pattern lower than a trap gun but that is something to learn thru practise.
IMO, half and full for DTL and 3/4 and full for ABT and Olympic.
The old adage remains true, beware of the man with 1 gun.
Best of luck and enjoy the learning process.

Thats a good point. I've put in some half decent scores in ABT using a sporter. What works for me is to start with the gun pointing a little higher than I would with a trap gun. My trap gun is used for holding down a license and nothing else!

Thats interesting guys thanks. I have started to adapt my sporter to the Trap shooting by aiming slightly higher and Ive adjusted my chokes. I have to say my scores are improving. Got 15 out of 25 the other day and it was only my 3rd time shooting ABT. Furthermore i got a 23 out of 25 in DTL.
My gun didnt come with a full choke so i have to make do with my 1/2 and 3/4 for now. I have ordered a full so im looking forward to trying that out when it arrives.
Would i be correct in saying its better to put the tighter of the two chokes in the second barrell that fires?

Yes. The bird is moving away and you want a tighter choke to avoid over spreading of the shot at the longer distances.
