Apologies for cross posting, hope it's OK with the Mods.

    On the Politics board, here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056054094

nominations are invited for people to engage in a debate with Paul Gogarty of the Greens.

Maybe somebody from the huntin' shootin' fishin' fraternity should be involved:)

Yeah, that's been kicking about for a few days. Folks, please remember you're being ambassadors for hunting and shooting in general if you get involved in this; don't make us look bad. Please don't rant, tempting as it is, and pretty please check your spelling and typing, even though it seems like such a small thing.

I vote for Johngalway to put the case forward for the defence!;)

why would anybody debate with a publicity merchant like Gogarty.
Both him and his party are dead in the water and they dont deserve the time of day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭dCorbus

    Very good point, natdog.

Between this Boards.ie debate and the UCG thingy, perhaps this is all part of a Green Party pre-election strategy to get themselves back out there and to raise brand-awareness of the party, just before it disappears up it's own hole in the next election.

So, maybe, just maybe, by engaging with these people we will be providing them the oxygen of publicity upon which they thrive?

Maybe we would be better served by ignoring the bleating death-rattle of a failed and moribund "political" party and to allow the Green Party to skulk off and die quietly, privately, and peacefully with some remaining vestige of dignity in the Elephants Graveyard of Irish Politics.;)

    We can but hope........:)

Actually, it wasn't Gogarty's idea; Devore went and invited him to come on here after one of Gogarty's twitter rants.

And the idea is that you have to start somewhere, but if you can get TDs to accept the intertubes as a medium they have to pay attention to, it makes all our lives a little easier.

Obviously I accept and concur with what people think of the GP and hope that they are headed for oblivion.

However, the majority of contributors to these shooting forums are “green” in the true sense of the word in that they have a deep love for the countryside, nature and wildlife and what is more, a deep and factual understanding of the realities and problems facing our environment.

So, I think it would be a good idea to have somebody engage in the debate with <mod edit:Gogarty> and challenge their fallacies in a reasoned and constructive manner.

You mean like our current Minister for Health and our ex-Minister for Justice (who's now making noises about a return to politics)?

There have been times I've been happy and times I've been sad that the internet isn't a democracy.

Guess which one I am now :D

Nope, deerhunter1, twasn't me. But might be interested all the same, thanks.:) PM me the details if you have some spare ones. Thanks.
    the internet isn't a democracy

No democrary here I'm afraid, jg - A benign dictatorship / ochlocracy perhaps, but a democracy?.....Heavens forbid such a thing!:D
But you do strike me as a Good Man for the job, all the same! But then again, I'm not a great judge of character!!!!:rolleyes::p
    current Minister for Health

More's the pity that she's still hanging on by her pummelig fingertips! An FFer by another name.
    ex-Minister for Justice

Ah, indeed, the Good Ol' Days - When you knew Right from Right and which side your thatcherite neocon bread was butter on.......but of course, having worked hard to earn said bread, which had been well and truly privatized by that stage.....None of your pinko socialist liberal bread, mind! Careful, now! Down with That-Sort-of-Thing!

    :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::D

    True, true :D

Truth be told, I simply have no interest in conversing with the GP, in any forum or manner, for any purpose - perhaps more so with a TD who has showed such disregard for the Daíl as the one in question (but that seems common place at the moment?). I only want one thing from them, for them to go away. All I need for a chance of that is a General Election. I do concede that it's likely they won't entirely go away, but enough of them may go away for them to become less harmfull to all the things I love than they currently are. I am picky in regards to who I associate with and converse to :D

I may also lean slightly towards being a "ranty type" too :D

I think the type of questions/topics needs to be carefully thought true to expose the Greens for what they are, keeping away from there usual rants about the shooting and hunting communities.

    That's Fairy Nuff so.
Your candidacy has been duly withdrawn from the ballot papers!;):D

Anyone else want to step up?

yeah, I invited him here after a brief back-and-forth on Twitter.

This isnt a "hunting" thing but you are welcome to throw in a couple of questions. The less preachy and more punchy the better from your pov.

By the way, if you are not willing to bother taking them to task, then you can hardly complain about what they do.... neh?

    Why me?
I'll go representing myself, however, I am not as good at debating as I could be, or should be.

One has to have a great grasp of teh english language to be good at debating. I have had several debates over the years defending my sport.
However my accent portrays me as a bogger. If you want to defeat a GREEN you need a south dublin accent to win favour.(I appreciate yer man is from wexford)

If i was not used to your wind ups I might have thought you were serious, i will be on the frontline soon defending our sport/rural life against the greens.

    Watch this space

Eamon Ryan once told an agri contractor who asked him about the tax on green Diesel "to buy a woodchip boiler"
Interesting running a combine on wood chip ;)

Your going on a programme on RTE and your going to defend our right to hunt etc., by the way I'd love to know where you reckon you've got this mandate from to represent "the many hunters out there", and your worried about photos of you online

So if you speak on the programme I'll know it's you, you'll be the lad with a balaclava on or will they put you in a dark place and use someone elses voice :D

That was for the boards.ie discussion not Frontline :P

I would go but have you not noticed most programmes on RTE regarding shooting and hunting always lean towards the antis point of view.

I would be happy to debate with anyone on my love of and right to hunt/shoot/fish. However, my home is too far from an exchange for landline broadband and my dongle will give me only dial-up speeds ............ So much for Govt. promises and the 'New Smart Technology" generation.

I read alot (not all) of the questions posed to the TD. Most were responded to with non answers, vagueness, towing the party line, and my personal favourite " thats the way things were, we could not change them", as per his response when questioned on the absurb wages, golden handshake and pension of "Mr" Neary.

He tried playing the sympathy card of how the Greens were being sectioned out as a distraction technique by FF, and to some extent i agree there, but if someone were making a fool of any of us we would simply not associate with them. Now i know in politics its not quite that simple, but yet they (Greens) still support FF to get policies into place irrespective of the reprecussions or consequences.

Anyway as this is not a political forum, well done Sparks on a well worded and precise question and rebutal. Very well put. Its a pity he side stepped the issue and tried the "victiim" route rather than simply answer the question.

For all the "hype" around the debate i think we are no more informed now than before Mr Gogarty began his responses. Just my opinion.

That's no surprise to me. I figured as much before the thing started. I don't understand how people thought it would be any different. Whether in front of TV cameras, radio mic's, public meetings or on boards.ie they've always got their game face on and the party line at hand.

As I said, the mice don't give a toss.

I am not surprised that Mr Gogarty didn't reply on the Salmon.
It is hard to defend the kind of indefensible inaction that the Green Party have pursued since in power.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,108 ✭✭✭pedroeibar1

He turned up, that's about all. Not surprised by his contribution, nor disappointed as I did not expect much anyway.

He is an ambitious little g#t, prepared to go to lengths to get some PR, e.g. baying at Stagg, particularly as he is launching his campaign for the Lord Mayoralty! Looking forward to seeing him getting his comeuppance!:D:D

As his Boards participation clearly was a PR precursor to his latest LM antic and he ignored anything to do with hunting (excluding the dismissive swipe at 'rogue elements') might I suggest that this is now more suited to the Politics Board and be closed/removed/binned?
    Thanks,
    P.
