    Can anyone at all help me out?

    I find when my e5830 becomes temperamental it helps to plug it in to a different usb slot, in this case try uninstalling the application then use ccleaner or similar and reinstall the modem from a different usb.

    Moved to Windows, as it's more a software/OS problem.

    A colleague was having a similar issue.
    The 3 USB stick is a compound device, and the drivers are stored on the onboard USB key. It appeared that the sub-devices were being added in the incorrect order?

    Can you try copying the drivers from the USB key to your hard drive and re-running the setup program from there?

    Tryed plugging it into different usb slots and no luck,when you plug it into the usb slot it should bring up the installation screen automatically but it does'nt,I already have it uninstalled thats my problem it wont reinstall for me.

    afaik if the device has been installed previously Windows pulls the driver from its saved (cached) driver file store, so sometimes if this driver cache is damaged Windows will pick the wrong driver for the device or load a damaged unworkable driver.

    This might be relevant http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810882 don't forget to keep rename your old driver cache file if the fix fails so you can put it back again the way it was.

    How do I do this?

    Connect the device.
    After leaving the device for a minute or so, you should be able to open My Computer and see a new drive (e: f: g: perhaps, depending on the pre-existing setup of your computer).

    Within this is a setup program and a folder.
    Select them and copy. Create a new folder on your computer and paste these files into it.

    Run the contained setup program from this new folder.

    If you're not seeing a new drive appear, then the problem is with windows and the usb key entries that it hasn't cleaned up. It can be cleaned up through the registry, but is a bit technical and you'd better have a good backup made first.

    So by the sounds of it you have one of three problems to sort out or a combination of the three:

    1) Device really is dodgy - unlikely and easily testable on another PC

    2) Corrupt Windows Driver Cache

    3) Messed up registry entry(s) that may identify the device incorrectly or try to load the wrong drivers.

    or possibly 2 and 3 together.

    1) So just in case its worth seeing if you can see the Virtual CD driver when you plug it into another machine.

    2) The MS fix I quoted isn't too hard if you have the orignal Windows Disc and if you screw it up you can recover from the problem (if you rename the current driver cache file first)

    3) Registry might be OK so don't do anything untill you've tried 2) above

    Also before you do anything else have you tried something as simple as a System Restore to a point just before you uninstalled the 3 modem software and drivers? Start>Programs>Accesories>System Tools>Systems Restore (or something similar:)) You might be able to restore to a Restore Point created by automatically when you uninstalled the software (if you're lucky). If you have a suitable System Restore Point and that doesn't work then I think the registry is OK and the problem is in the Driver Cache but I'm prepared for anyone to explain otherwise.

    Gonna try the restore thing in while :)

    Ok just tryed the system restore thing and it did'nt work.The first I did a restore back to saturday and the mobile application was'nt on the desktop,so then I went back to september 15th and it was there and I was thinking happy days it worked................wrong,when I click on the app I get an error message saying "init fail"also I should have mentioned this is my sisters laptop and she has no windows cd she cant find it,any other suggestions I could try?

    Also when I go into the device manager there is yellow exclamation mark over the Huawei mass storage usb device (which is the modem) but underneath it there is another one for the tsstcorp dvd+rw ts-l632d which Im guessing is the cdrom drive?surely thats not right?

    oh and I appreciate all the help so far :).

    A few random thoughts:

    Firstly do a System Restore back to the date when you first started trying System Restores so your back the way you were and nothing your sister has installed recently is messed up.

    You could in Device Manager uninstall any devices that aren't installed correctly then do a Scan for new Hardware if the decvices aren't found and installed correctly after a reboot.

    Maybe there is some mix up with the tsstcorp dvd+rw ts-l632d Device and the virtual CD drive the dongle creates, so uninstalling as above might fix that, if it doesn't then you need a similar Windows PC with the same OS to copy the Drive Cache file from (Driver.cab) or the CD.

    My current thought is that doing the System Restore will put the registry back the way it was but it does nothing with to the Driver.cab file, so if we put the registry back to a way when the system worked OK then the problem is that the Driver.cab file is corrupt and needs replacing.

    Ok did this and the mobile broadband program was on the desktop but I was still getting the "ini" whenever I clicked on it,also in my computer It was reconising the dongle as "j"drive but when I clicked on it would say please insert disk.

    Is that what the yellow exclamation mark means?not installed properly or something to do with the drivers?all whats does a code 41 error mean?

    That was just to get us back to square one and not do what many of the %&%&^ phone support guys do and leave you with a whole new bunch of problems.

    Not looked up the actual error code but it probably means it can find the driver but can't see the device or the driver can't load for some reason, google something like "device manager error code 41" without the quotes for more info than you need. Googled it myself and found this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123 which gives the full reason but I don't think that will help, but if you go to that link it should bring up an M$ Fix-it dialogue which might do something for you, at least it should do no harm :)

    The orignal driver cache file should be the same on XP Home and XP Professional so just use what ever you've got, for preference pick the install CD with the hight service pack number so XP pro with SP1 CD might not be as good as a XP pro with SP2 CD. That should mean you get slightly more up to date drivers but no big deal as if it works just go to Windows update and do a Custom update to see what updated drivers M$ suggests you need.

    Sephiroth, try uninstalling the device through the windows device manager;

    • Right-click on My Computer;
    • hit Manage;
    • Go to Device Manager;
    • Locate your device with the warning symbol;
    • right click & uninstall;

    If all goes according to plan, Windows will remove the device and it's drivers. Give the pc a reboot and windows should pick it up like it did the first time it was installed.

    If all goes horribly wrong and you can't see the "virtual" cd drive the modem sets up for installing the software, it could be trying to take a drive letter that's already assigned to another drive. so, same as above, but instead of going into device manager;

    • Go to Disk Management;
    • right click on teh usb modem drive;
    • Select change drive letter and paths;
    • change the letter to something that's not already in use;

    ofcourse, you could be having an entirely different problem!

    ok, well, Windows can see it, it just has a problem using it. Do you have access to the fake/virtual CD drive it creates for installing itself?

    at this point, i can only tell you to keep trying to completely remove the device from Windows, i.e. via Device Manager. Make sure you're removing it all, the modem & the usb/virtual CD drive parts. Check under Universal Serial Bus Controllors, DVD/CD-ROM Drives, anything you suspect is part of the device, uninstall it. Shut down the PC, unplug the modem, start the PC, then use a cleaner on the PC if you like. Then try plugging in the modem in the same or a different USB port.

    The problem is either with the PC or the modem, or both. Have you tried installing it on another PC yet to rule out the modem?

    It's definitely Windows XP then. Like i said, try to completely remove the thing from Windows, shut down, unplug, start (to prevent Windows trying to reinstall it before you want it to), and see how it goes

    This might be worth a shot.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310575

    Scroll down to the advanced bit and you'll see this.
    Remove and reinstall all USB controllers

    To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Click the Hardware tab.
    3. Click the Device Manager button.
    4. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    5. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
    6. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.
    7. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.

    I did something similar when my E5830 started telling me it was disconnected when it was actually connected, turns out it wasn't my problem but my usb cable been a tad long :p

    Would I need a drivers cd though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,259 ✭✭✭downwithpeace

    They should be auto installed after you reboot, i'm on win7 and i didn't need to reinstall them as the OS did it for me.
    Not 100% on XP but i don't see why it would be any different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭woolymammoth

    while largly similar in many ways, Windows 7 is largly different in many other ways. XP is very good at picking up hardware and installing it, but it doesn't always work. In my opinion, Win7 is better at finding the correct drivers, either locally or on the web. I doubt you will have any problem with it though, just as long as you have an internet connection, wireless or LAN..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,259 ✭✭✭downwithpeace

    I think XP should still install them after rebooting as they are main drivers, just remember to unplug everything first and if your using a USB keyboard you might need to re-enable it in your BIOS.

    One option which would bypass the problem, (and may be something that would be considering in the future anyway) would be to get a router... similar to this one.. (not sure if it supports your EXACT model of bband device)http://www.edimax.com/en/produce_detail.php?pd_id=312&pl1_id=3&pl2_id=18

    I bought one to get better 3G reception (i.e. I put it in the room in the house closest to the mast), and I have numerous wireless and wired devices connecting to it pretty much flawlessly... You dont have to worry about local USB issues, or running the 3broadband software every time on bootup. You just boot up the PC and you are connected automatically through Ethernet cable or wifi...

    With your USB issue, it sounds to me like Windows has picked up on the wrong driver/corrupt driver and continues to try to use that every time you insert the USB device.. My first approach would be to find the device in Device Manager and then try the "update driver" bit, and manually try to feed it the proper driver file (you would need to find this on CD or website of manufacturer)...

    Some interesting discussion but tbh I really don't think any of it will help the OP if he can't get hold of a Windows XP CD.

    He's already said the error msg is the same as that reported in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810882 and the fix needs an XP CD or CD image or restore partition.

    The problem isn't really specific to XP or Windows 7 as its a common problem with that sort of USB device that has one Plug and Play ID which is used on the one pyhsical device for 2 different logical devices. Windows first reads the ID and says hello device I see your a CDROM then when the drivers for the modem load Windows then sees the same ID as being a modem so loads the modem drivers - can you see the posiblities of a mix up here? Then once Windows has a copy of the drivers in its drivers.cab it keeps going back there for them so if the drivers are corrupt in that file the problem keep occuring untill the driver.cab file is replaced.

    If I'm wrong then nothing lost as if the OP follows the instructions for replacing the driver.cab file as he can always put things back the way they were.

    Was about to try the driver cab solution,had my xp cd in cd rom drive and it wont run it,in actual fact its not reconising any cd :confused: im getting a code 41 error and when I try the solutions on that windows site none of them work,this starting to wreck my head now :/.

    after the times you removed/uninstalled the device, did you reinstall it in the same USB port or a different one?

    Same one but I have tryed the other ones with no success.

    So you probably do need the driver cab solution as your system can't load the CDROM drivers anymore.

    You will need to do something clever to copy the driver cab file over now, either by mounting your HDD in another machine or across a network as I suspect if you try to copy the file using any CDROM or USB device the device won't be recognised - but try anyway.

    Define professional ;)
    Most would quite sencibly just take a quick look and then tell you they needed to reinstall Windows. Hopefully your sister has a full backup of all her stuff.
