Gas Central Heating - Installation

    Hi,

Looking to buy a house that has oil central heating. I would want to change that to gas.

Just wondering if anyone can give me an idea of who much it would cost to do? It's a 3 bedroom, 2 batroom house with converted garage, kitchen/breakfast room and sitting/dining room.

I've spoken to Bord Gais and they can run gas to the house. But what I'm looking for is prices on the heating system installation.

Also, would anyone know if I have to get a specialist to remove the existing oil tank out back?

    Thanks.

I got a quote last month for a full gas heating installation. 3 bed, i bath house, solid concrete walls. Not an upgrade, a whole new system.

    Broken down as follows

3 Coil System for Wood stove with back burner and Solar (To be able to take all 3, no plumbing for back boiler or stove.)
    8 Rads + 1 6foot towel rack.
    Condensing Boiler
    Tanks etc
    All Labour
    €6800 - €700 Grant = €6100

€1000 to bring th plumbing down for the woodburning stove
€1200 to put in all necessary geay for solar minus the panels itself.

    Hope this helps

Thanks a million! I had absolutely no idea what something like that would cost, so it's great to get an idea.

How long did the install take?

havent got it done yet!1 Grand or two short. Hopefully next month, its not that cold yet!! The heating guy said it will be fairly quick, under a week. Take into account though, i have to channel through solid concrete walls to bring the pipes about, if you have plasterboard, it will be a hell of a lot quicker

good to know. i'm trying to plan everthing that needs to be done, along with a hefty time contingency, so that'll give me something to go on.

Some times the radiators dont have to be changed if the system is not to corroded, a power flush with cleanser would be enough to get your radiator's back to full efficiency, then protect them with an inhibitor.
But get your plumber to see what condition your system is in before you start.

If your only changing the boiler with new controls, as in room stats and cylinder stat with gas pipe brought to the boiler from the gas meter, I would imagine 3000-700 euro would get a lot of that work done.

just make sure that the person who is taking away the oil tank has a registered license to remove hazards material!

the original heating system is pretty knackered and the radiators are in bad knick, but i may be able to salvage a couple of them. i'll do a bit of research into finding someone who can take away the old oil tank. thanks!

Yes should be a specialist waste contractor for the oil tank but if its a steel tank then salvage yards might be worth a call or might be able to recommend someone. If you can afford it change the rads as new ones will be more efficient and it may be worth getting an insulation firm to have a look before you spec the boiler.

    hi,
there is a grant available to up grade your heating system of 700e , also so its worth metioning the warranty on the boilers as you want trouble free use over the years , there is a german make called Viessmann that comes with a 10 year warranty , there is a discussion on here about them , top of the range come in at the same price as most others , what makes have you been quoated on ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Traditional

as for taking the old oil away , i know who recycles it and takes it away for free

You get a five year guarantee with viesmann ,only if installed by a trained installer.

yes thats right you get a 10 year warranty , they are also very very quite when running up to 97 % efficient and cost about two hundred more than the normal ones, as a trained installer i have been fitting them all year , its 5 year parts and labor and 10 years on the stainless heat exchanger , been to uk to do course on them .

I recently bought a Worcester Bosch 18ri from Hi Speed Gas in Bluebell. I was looking at Viesmann but I am always wary of small continental brands. They can be brilliant but if only one distributor is fitting them you are over a barrell service wise. I got a 10 years parts and labour warranty on my boiler and heat exchanger once I get it serviced by them yearly. I can opt out anytime aand take a chance if I wish on service and I did not have to pay up front. I could't argue with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,492 ✭✭✭roy rodgers

I believe that Intergas do a boiler and it has a 15 year guarantee on the heat exchanger.

Great boiler too. Not many parts in it so less things to go wrong.

well im happy for you , at least we have something in common , they are both german ! top class in fact when you look around at the other trash on the market , long live german technology !! most others are made in china you know cheap labour an all that , no way stick with what you know .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Traditional

they are a good boiler , but dont have 97% efficiency, and 37 decibels , now match that any of you !!

Worcester guarantees their heat exchangers for ten years aswell ,it's misleading to say the boiler itself is guaranteed for ten years.

Worcester also guarantees all other parts for five years.

I have found that most installer who bitch about a boiler do so because they don't know how it works.

well said my man , 97% efficient
always beat down the opposition and treat everyone with contempt , look the facts are Viessmann Boilers are top of the range 37 decibels ( almost silent) 10 year warranty 5 years parts & Labour 97% efficient, , now beat that ! any of you !

    F stands for fault
F4 is as near to bitching about a boiler as i like to get.
F4 is a fault code yes but there is a reason why it was feared  and that Viessmann manufactures:cool: don't walk on water, also at the time the decibel reading on my sprintkane noisy boiler detector was er..... 0db high and low:p

they are a good boiler , but dont have 97% efficiency, and 37 decibels , now match that any of you !!

The Vitodens 100W has a seasonal efficiency of 90.2%. The 97% is the efficency of the heat exchanger in terms of heat transfer through the water ways due to there configuration. The most efficient boiler on the market is the Vaillant ecoTech. Look up the SEDBUK or HARP data base.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Traditional

valiant rubbish ,dont know anyone who fits them , worked on one though down in Metec ,big heat exchanger , no you need to do more research into why the viessmann is top of the range and gives 97% efficiency

    I am a Viessmann installer!!

I've never fitted Vaillant but know a couple of guys fitting them for years and have never had any probs with them.

    +1
Viessmann & Vaillant are my benchmark when comparing different boilers.

Modern gas boilers are so easy to work on now that even a boiler classed as trash can be repaired and parts replaced with low/little skill level reducing any drama, boilers/combi's in the past were very hard to work on.

Thanks! Will give you a shout if the sale goes ahead. Will want to clear out the old oil tank ASAP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Traditional

beware of the Chinese boilers , most other makes are made there cheap child labour an all that , no wonder the screws are so small !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Traditional

it will cost more to remove the old oil than the tank , but as i said i know a guy who will do it for free .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,492 ✭✭✭roy rodgers

If I was getting free oil, I would collect it for nothing. People actually charge for this service and more importantly people pay for it?

so i can give my customers a ten year warranty, immergas made in china no thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Traditional

well ring one of the so called oil disposal companies , see how much they charge , i rang one of them , they told me it would have to transported to a cleansing plant very carefully, down in wexford some where, it would be so much a mile , and expect an inspector to come out and give a detailed report on the material . then i heard of a guy who does it for free, ok so he gets a drop of oil here an there but its a great service.

standards my man standards , top of the range , top of the range only. long live the gerries , back to china Mr Immergas

The 10 year warranty is standard on the heat exchanger, the 5 year parts and labour is the extra if installed by a Viessmann installer.

    Who are immergas?

Did you hear of ARCA? I keep getting emails about them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Traditional

well fair play to ya which model do you fit most ? i fit a lot of 100 `s 19kw & 26kw modulating, really quite , aren't they, the clients love them as the viewing window gives temp, flame , comfort mode etc, so easy to use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,492 ✭✭✭roy rodgers

    Immergas are made in itlay.

I think someone should of learned geography in school..:p

standards my man standards , top of the range , top of the range only. long live the gerries , back to china Mr Immergas

I agree they are top of the range and I love them, but not every one has money in there arse pocket for a Viessmann so you have to keep your and there options open. There are good mid range boilers out there like Ariston, Vokera and Glow-worm (the newer glow-worm models) that are reasonable prices and very reliable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Traditional

they are a new crowd setting up in opposition to RGII , and Dublin Gas as they are dominating the market place , and there was talk of Dublin Gas fitting boilers on peoples bills , sure where would that leave us ? out in the cold !!
and the gang in here laughing at us !
the organizers are a few of the bigger well known company's who are feeling the pinch so i have mixed views on exactly what they are at , be wary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Traditional

there is little difference in the price two hundred at most , between a rolls royce or a mongoral from italy
