iPod touch vs iPhone

I don't mean to hijack this thread...I'm also interested in getting either an ipod touch or the iphone, and trying to check out the difference.

My question is: how come the 32gb ipod touch is $299 on the US website, and €299 on the Irish website (including VAT & Levies), whereas the 32gb iPhone is (from) $299 on the US website yet it's twice that at €699 on the Irish website?

I just wonder how come the cost of the touch can be relatively transferred from US to Irish costs, whereas the phone cost has such a vast increase?

I don't mean to turn this post into a moan about rip-off Ireland, but genuinely curious why such a difference?

    Thanks

That price is for an iPhone in the US on a contract - it's not possible to buy an iPhone in the US without a contract.

The Irish price of €699 is for an iPhone outside of contract. In contract, you can get a 32GB iPhone from €60 from Three. Mobile telephony is one of the few areas where the value in the United States is generally awful compared to Europe.

You mustnt have read past the price. The irish apple store is for an unlocked phone. The US price is the subsidised price for AT&T on a two year contract.

That's sorta my point, the last few years seen a huge increase in sensors.
The camera companies have been banging out consumer models with MP numbers that are silly, so now people expect high numbers everywhere.

It's even funnier when you look at it along side HDTV, everything sounds great when it has HD resolution. Nobody ever tells you that standard HD is .9 megapixels. Even the 1080 res, that isn't used yet us only 2MP

You can't compare 2MP of a moving image to 2MP of a still image.

where dud I compare them, I was talking about public perception not picture quality.
I was talking about resolution, pointing out that people expect MP values of 5, 6, 7+
even though they are almost never displayed at full res, and ironically HD is the defacto for top quality screens, yet .9 MP would sound terrible and people would shun it due to perceptions

The iphone4 has better images due to better processing, I just rather see money spent here and on a better kens/sensor than on a MP race to 10

Just on this point. The MP of a camera is just a wow factor to impress people who don't understand it. For probably 99% of photos on the iphone 0.7 is fine.
Remember, the screen is less than .7MP, so most of the time, you are just using up hard-drive space by taking 4MP photos, they are still scaled to 0.7 for viewing on the screen.

Obviously if you zoom in this is different

You're correct in saying that high MP numbers on camera phones is just a con - higher MP count introduces more noise to the image, while other more critical factors such as the optics are ignored - but there really is a extremely obvious and tangible benefit between .7mp and say 3-5MP on a camera phone - which would be the sweet spot for sensors the size found on camera phone modules.
