Guys just a quick Q... Is the only diff between an ipod touch and an i-phone the fact that an ipod touch isnt a phone? How do you pay for internet access on an ipod touch if they are primarily the same apart from the phone. The reason being is that im happy with my phone at the min and dont really need to change it but i am looking for a new ipod for my music and podcast etc...

The only internet access with the iPod touch is through wifi, so its not just the ability to make calls / send and recieve texts.

You pay your provider for internet, or it's free on contract etc...

Other major differences would be that the iPod doesn't have an IPS panel and therefore viewing angles/brightness isn't as good as the iPhone. iPod has only half the memory 256 vs 512mb of the iPhone.

are you talking about the ipod touch?

so basically advice is that there are loads of benifits for the iphone over the ipod touch apart from just it being able to make phone calls

Ipod touch has no GPS chip either does it? I know the one my wife has does not so unless newer ones do then you can't use gps software.

Forgot about that, ya it's missing of the iPod.

Wouldn't really say that. The ram might hurt it down the road but otherwise it's a fine device.

doesn't the iPod touch now have the same screen as the iPhone 4?

hmm could have sworn I heard Jobs say "same screen as iPhone 4" in the Music event keynote, but it's two against one here so I'll stand down :pac:

Also excuse my ignorance, but I don't understand wifi.

I've ordered an ipod touch and will be getting it next week.

Will I pick up wifi off my own internet provider at home? And then is it just hit and miss when you're out unless you're at desgnated wifi points?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭midlandsmissus

The other big difference for the guy considering buying it, is that the ipod touch camera is .7 megapixel.

do you have wireless internet at home presently?
can your laptop go on the internet without any wires connected?

when your out and about you have no internet acess, except at free wifi spots.

Yes wireless, as in the USB stick, so how does it work for the ipod touch. Will it just pick up my wireless at home? Do I have to stick the usb in the laptop and keep the laptop turned on to pick it up on the touch? Never done this before!

Why do you think they made the camera so poor...it seems like a tactic to stop everyone buying the ipod touch over the iphone. If it had a good camera it would probably be too close to an iphone without a contract.

If by USB stick you mean a 3G dongle, you will need to set up internet connection sharing on your computer to be able to use the iPod's internet abilities.

The differences between the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4th gen:

    iPhone 4 512MB of ram///iPod Touch 4th gen 256MB

iPhone 4 IPS display///iPod Touch 4th gen doesn't have it (still 640X960 resolution though)

iPhone 4 WiFi/3G plus calls///iPod Touch 4th gen wifi only

iPhone 4 GPS plus compass///iPod Touch 4th gen doesn't have either

iPhone 4 oleophobic coating///iPod Touch 4th gen doesn't have this

    iPhone 4 5MP camera for photos///iPod Touch 4th gen 0.7MP

iPhone 4 starts at €599 sim free for the 16GB model and goes up to €699 for the 32GB///iPod Touch 4th gen starts at €229 for the 8GB model and goes up to €399 for the 64GB

Some compromises had to be made with the iPod Touch to keep it at the same price.
The iPhone has room for more enhancements because the networks subsidise the price, whereas that can't happen with iPod Touches

    most likely a typo.

they are 599 for the 16gig and 699 for the 32gig on the apple store.

Just on this point. The MP of a camera is just a wow factor to impress people who don't understand it. For probably 99% of photos on the iphone 0.7 is fine.
Remember, the screen is less than .7MP, so most of the time, you are just using up hard-drive space by taking 4MP photos, they are still scaled to 0.7 for viewing on the screen.

Obviously if you zoom in this is different

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Is that not assuming you only want to view the pictures on your phone?

If you want to view them on your computer or print them off then the more MP the better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Not really, it you want to print them, or view in large format then get a real camera.
The lens diameter and the sensor size is way too small to do justice to a reasonably high megapixels

basically my iPhone photos are only for my iPhone or facebook or similar do I'd rather have extra space

Wow, I didn't know that the iPod's camera was that shitty!

I would have thought it should have been at least 2MP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

That's sorta my point, the last few years seen a huge increase in sensors.
The camera companies have been banging out consumer models with MP numbers that are silly, so now people expect high numbers everywhere.

It's even funnier when you look at it along side HDTV, everything sounds great when it has HD resolution. Nobody ever tells you that standard HD is .9 megapixels. Even the 1080 res, that isn't used yet us only 2MP

While true, it is simply a case that people do not carry cameras around with them all the time.
When you find yourself wanting to take a picture it is nice to have a phone that can at least take something pretty decent without the analog zoom rather than go without or take a crappy looking picture on a sub standard phone.

I have no idea what the Iphone 4 picture quality is actually like as I do not have one. However if these are anything to go by, they will do the job in a pinch.
I do have an Iphone 3G and it is rubbish compared to those images.

    Side by side test here.

I don't mean to hijack this thread...I'm also interested in getting either an ipod touch or the iphone, and trying to check out the difference.

My question is: how come the 32gb ipod touch is $299 on the US website, and €299 on the Irish website (including VAT & Levies), whereas the 32gb iPhone is (from) $299 on the US website yet it's twice that at €699 on the Irish website?

I just wonder how come the cost of the touch can be relatively transferred from US to Irish costs, whereas the phone cost has such a vast increase?

I don't mean to turn this post into a moan about rip-off Ireland, but genuinely curious why such a difference?

    Thanks

That price is for an iPhone in the US on a contract - it's not possible to buy an iPhone in the US without a contract.

The Irish price of €699 is for an iPhone outside of contract. In contract, you can get a 32GB iPhone from €60 from Three. Mobile telephony is one of the few areas where the value in the United States is generally awful compared to Europe.

You mustnt have read past the price. The irish apple store is for an unlocked phone. The US price is the subsidised price for AT&T on a two year contract.

You can't compare 2MP of a moving image to 2MP of a still image.

where dud I compare them, I was talking about public perception not picture quality.
I was talking about resolution, pointing out that people expect MP values of 5, 6, 7+
even though they are almost never displayed at full res, and ironically HD is the defacto for top quality screens, yet .9 MP would sound terrible and people would shun it due to perceptions

The iphone4 has better images due to better processing, I just rather see money spent here and on a better kens/sensor than on a MP race to 10

You're correct in saying that high MP numbers on camera phones is just a con - higher MP count introduces more noise to the image, while other more critical factors such as the optics are ignored - but there really is a extremely obvious and tangible benefit between .7mp and say 3-5MP on a camera phone - which would be the sweet spot for sensors the size found on camera phone modules.
