    The shortlist is:

    Bono;
    John Hume;
    James Connolly;
    Michael Collins
    and Mary Robinson.

    Don't be complaining though, apparently, we chose this shortlist.

    One is a musician who, as far as I know, has done no good for anyone but himself. Banged on about the poor, then bought Forbes magazine.
    Another, while maybe having some claim, was born in Northern Ireland - Britain.
    Yet another, who would have the strongest claim of the five imo, was born in Scotland.
    The fourth one split the country in two and is, at least, partially responsible for the violence in the north in subsequent years.
    And finally, a president who, let's be honest, did sod all for anyone. Spoke coherently on a few subjects, but haven't we all.

    3/5 wouldn't make my list of people I'd give the time of day to.

    Dev suffered badly because people believe what they see in fillums.

    This is ridiculous. Ireland has history of brilliant writers, poets and playwrites. We also have a pretty decent history in science, hell one of them even has a nobel prize for physics and this is the best they can muster up for the list. There are so many more people who deserve to be on that list.

    The whole Nakatomi Plaza incident probably didn't help his case either.

    If someone can explain to me how Bono is greater than Robert Boyle or even Susan Boyle, I'll happilly accept his inclusion.

    Boyle didn't hang around with a guy called The Edge.

    Terrible list this is. Lists like this just show that most people are idiots.

    This is what I think happened:

    Schools across the country doing "computers" lessons. Kids given "safe" websites to look at. Usual old names spouted by teachers. Kids learn to click the mouse by voting for generic big names. RTÉ is happy, kids are happy, people who know better face-palm and head-desk all over the country.

    I genuinely can't think of any other way for those names to appear in that list!

    By reading the OP, I thought this was some sort of award. I couldn't understand why the hell they would want to do that, but no, they are basically going to make a documentary about them all. That's fair enough.

    The full list is funny though - http://www.rte.ie/tv/irelandsgreatest/
