HTC Desire HD. I believe it is out this month. Should be announced on the 15th AFAIK.

Of course you should wait to see what people think of it but I have high hopes.

I went from the iphone to a Samsung Galaxy S. The reason I went with the SGS was:

I liked using my iphone but felt I was restricted by it and had to jailbreak to get the most out of it.

I never felt android was at the point to offer me more than ios until I used a friends nexus and was blown away by 2.2. Couldnt justify spending 500 bills on one of them tho.

I use my phone as a browser/media device first and never really for gaming even though the SGS is great for this. I have 32gb of music and video on my microsd. I have tried the emulators and roms, they run well but I dont have the time to use them for more than 5 min at a time.

    Cons

The Camera is great but there is no flash. I have not needed a flash on my phone before and think I will survive without one for now.

There is a lag issue with 2.1 on the SGS but I fixed that in 10 min through a 1 click lag fix I got through appbrain. 2.2 will be released before the end of this month and will make the SGS even more of a contender thanks to no lag and flash 10 on its brilliant screen.

A guy I work with has the SGS and I was very impressed with it the only issue I have is I am with O2 and they dont have it on bill. The other thing is the poor guy seems to be re charging it all the time lol.

Yeah the battery life isn't great, but I'm still breaking mine in (letting it go fully dead before charging) -maybe he never did this. I still get a bit of lag with OneClickLagFix but great phone otherwise. Just waiting on 2.2 now

slcd is not any worse than amoled. just Samsung have squeezed their hole and not providing anymore. obviously this well affected htc as they had to stop production. desire isfar more advanced than sgs the copy of 3gs and the desire should be available to be upgraded to 2.2 seen you take it out of the box

you said you liked your friends N1 then you should go for that

You can get an SGS on O2 billpay from Carphone Warehouse. I did just that yesterday. And I'm very happy so far!

Didn't you have to root the SGS to get the 1 click lag fix?

As for the OP's question, I would wait and see on Wednesday as the Desire HD could be very nice (Desire internals with Legend body maybe?). The only thing is it might be after christmas before they become available here.

The root is included in the lag fix, got it on appbrain and was very straight forward.

Regarding the battery. I play with mine so much I have to charge it everyday, but thank god thats how you are meant to. once they are broke in. My phone doesnt go under 30%, I had a family do on Sat and didnt take out my phone at all it lasted for 48 hours, 24 with below average use and 24 with above average.

I got it by changing from meteor to vodafone for 1 simple reason, I get free calls and texts to 5 numbers mobiles and landline, 150 min and 150 texts and 2gb data. €45 a month by buying online and it is only 109 buying online. I use textdroid to text anyone outside my 5 numbers, 600 webtexts a month and I dont really ring anyone else.

I have 8 days left on my billing month and I have used 10% of my 2bg data plan, 50 of my 500 webtexts and have 60 min left.

I have the Galaxy S (switched from HTC HD2) and I absolutely love the phone, does everything I want it to, brilliant screen and amazing features and I wouldn't swap for the world now!

Wish it had a flash but not really an issue for me as not a big camera person. I recommend it completely :) Most smartphones have pants battery life, I bring a charger to work for me so all ok on that score :D

I am currently with O2 and could get the SGS with them or switch to Vodaphone and get it cheaper. Just wondering which is the best for internet access when not on wifi?

i got my htc desire from meteor last month, 12 mnth contract, 200mins, 200 txts, free meteor calls and texts and 1gb of internet for 35e per month

if you go for an 18month contract it would be 30e per month

not bad, not bad at all!

Anybody heard of the new white Desire coming soon to CFW? Think I saw something on a forum that they're due in the UK soon. I know someone looking for a Desire on Meteor as it's by far the best value for what they will use it for but they are like gold dust and she has been told it could be November before they are back in store. Any news on availability yet? If a white one was in the way she would plump for that otherwise it could be a Galaxy S as that looks great too.
I have a Desire with AMOLED screen and I would say it's by far the best bit of kit I have ever put my hands on. 2.2 just rocks and with increased speed and lots of other features i reckon it is better than the Galaxy S even when that's updated to 2.2. I played around with the Galaxy S last week and it looks good but I would be weary about build quality and support as I have heard reports of them giving up the ghost after a while and none too good after and bit of hard knicks and knocks.
Still If it's going to be November before the Desire is back in Stock I will recommend that my friend goes for the Galaxy S

Out of curiosity - is it just the build and support you'd be worried about? I tried both today and thought both had fine builds. If more people are getting the Samsung, is there not decent support?

I suppose build more than support would be the concerns as it seemed to be a little lightweight and plasticy to me. I think the Desire is a bit more chunky. Yes I presume support will be getting better if they are selling millions of devices.
I also heard the Samsung version of Android is a little bit buggy and had a few issues with GPS and that the dialer is a nightmare but then again I am very happy with HTC sense and found it hard to get my way around the Galaxy S. Friend would not be interested in rooting so the ease of use would be why I also might go for the Desire with sense on board

What do you think would be the pros and cons of both Sense and the Samsung version of Android.?

Sense pros for me would be ease of use and the widget selection is pretty good.

The Galaxy had the Swype keyboard installed - nightmare. But then again that's easily replaced by the far superior SwiftKey keyboard. Also seemed like it took about 2 seconds for a voice call to kick in on the dialer

+1 For Galaxy S, I love it and it can only get better once Froyo comes out.

On Meteor though, bugger all reception, try VF or O2 I reckon.

Poor hero doesn't get the love it deserves. Can't wait to see the desire HD though. Might be very tempting.

I'm on meteor btw and coverage has never been a problem, though my old 7610 used to switch to roaming in Galway :D

Hero is not a bad phone, but I wouldn't consider recommending it at this point, there are better phones than it (never mind it being the best!)

I've had one since christmas, and while I like it, things about it do annoy me. Lack of official Froyo, poor quality camera, no camera flash being the main ones.

Looking forward to hopefully hearing the official announcement of the Desire HD tomorrow, and I am equally hoping that Meteor announce it is going to hit their netork before Christmas - so that I can pick it up (again, hopefully) as a christmas present for myself.

What I have seen about it so far (unoffical) looks very good, though I was hoping it would come with gingerbread, which is now looking very unlikely.

As everyone else is saying Desire HD. Avoid the Galaxy S if you can, it's really not up to scratch quality wise (Relative to HTC at least).

My finger is close to a "Buy" button for the Galaxy S as I don't want to be waiting for a Desire HD for weeks. I'm still not sure why you claim it's "not up to scratch" though?

I have both phones and I can tell you from experience that the Galaxy S while having slightly better hardware specs (Negligible in real life use to be honest) it absolutely fails in the overall package. Build quality feels poorer than the Desire and the finish tarnishes easily. The software on the phone is atrocious. It lags, it stutters and looks like an iPhone skin for Android more than anything else. There is NO developer support of any kind, the Desire has at an estimate almost 30 custom ROMs, the Galaxy S has about 2 custom ROMs which are more or less the same. Take PSFreedom (PS Jailbreaking app), the Android porting effort began on the 6th September for the Desire and completed on the 7th of September. As of yet, no one seems all too interested in working on the Galaxy S port barring one developer who's finding it extremely difficult due to the fact it's a proprietary Samsung chipset with little public documentation.

Which software in particular? I played about with the Samsung for about 7 minutes in the Vodafone store. Text messages seemed easy to compose for example. I couldn't dial anyone so can't comment on that. Can't you replace these anyway?

With respect to the lag - I thought there was a "one click" fix for that?

I thought the appearance was quite nice of the desktops. Sure, it's clearly ripping from the iPhone but the iPhone's interface is nice. Plus you can change all that.

I imagine this won't matter to the majority of users though. How many HTC owners use custom ROMs? This forum isn't a good place to find out. I'm genuinely curious though if it's just something a small hardcore group are doing and what advantages it really offers that you can't get via obtaining new apps.

Haven't bought anything yet, but would like a new phone before I go on holidays one month from now!

I bow to your superior knowledge. I think I will recommend to my friend she holds off for either the Desire HD, the White Desire or the original Desire if it becomes available soon.
as someone who has no intention of rooting I think the stock Sense on Desire with Froyo is by far the best. Also seems to be lots of support and widgets and users about that will help out if needed.
The Galaxy in my view would be number 3 on a list of top smartphones available in Ireland at the moment and I am afraid that with the number 1 slot being taken by the Desire the Galaxy would come in behind another smartphone that I wont mention here on an Android board.

That's all part of the stock Android system, Samsung couldn't have messed that up. My issue is primarily with how clunky and pointless Touchwiz seems to be. It took very heavily from the iOS 4 in how it looks which isn't something i'd like to have in a phone, it makes it look tacky. In any case you can replace that with LauncherPro and Dialer One e.t.c. Not an issue in itself. The main problem with their software is that it just isn't as highly polished and as stable as it could/should be.
    A few issues i've had

    - Refuses to boot up and needs to be reflashed -> Black screen + vibrations
    - Kernel panics (Happened only twice to be fair)
    - Lag from time to time

With respect to the lag - I thought there was a "one click" fix for that?
There is. The only issue being that it doesn't fully eliminate the problem. Besides that, why did Samsung release a phone that NEEDS root and a file system re-arrangement to get it to run somewhat acceptably? Poor software quality control.
I thought the appearance was quite nice of the desktops. Sure, it's clearly ripping from the iPhone but the iPhone's interface is nice. Plus you can change all that.
You can change it indeed but if you're going to get a non-stock Android phone you might as well get one with a good interface like HTC Sense. That adds functionality and looks at the same time and doesn't pose performance issues.

    Check XDA-Developers. I'd say a few thousand ;)

Using a stock ROM is wasting your phone's potential to be honest. Apps can do very little relative to custom ROMs in terms of modification
Haven't bought anything yet, but would like a new phone before I go on holidays one month from now!
Wait for tomorrow and see what HTC release, then decide :)

I only have deeply held views about the Galaxy S because of how disappointed I am with it. The only person that seems completely at odds with me on how the Galaxy S is like is cnocbui and he doesn't even have an Android phone let alone the Galaxy S. The phone is my father's but owing to the fact he makes me do pretty much everything on the phone for him I get to use it quite a bit.

You'd need to have used both phones for some time to get a feel of the differences between both. With the Desire the phone feels functional and works brilliantly out of the box, with the Galaxy S it needs plenty of tinkering to get it to come near to the standard of the Desire. That's not fanboyism as some people might want to claim. It's just my opinion of both phones.

Well granted but weren't there teething issues with HTC as well? I recall a friend with (the Hero I think) giving out about issues with dialling and dropping phone connections.

The HTC Desire's interface is nice. I'm not convinced it's that much better but that's going to be a matter of taste.
Using a stock ROM is wasting your phone's potential to be honest. Apps can do very little relative to custom ROMs in terms of modification
Given custom roms are always going to be a minority of the phone users, what advantages do they offer broadly? Different layout of screens? A suite of apps that you could just download elsewhere? Is it akin to different Linux distros?
Wait for tomorrow and see what HTC release, then decide :)
Yeah, I'm going to do that. One thing I prefer about the Galaxy is its larger screen over the Desire. I think this new Desire has a bigger screen now to match.
You'd need to have used both phones for some time to get a feel of the differences between both. With the Desire the phone feels functional and works brilliantly out of the box, with the Galaxy S it needs plenty of tinkering to get it to come near to the standard of the Desire.
I watched several YouTube reviews, etc. and the reviewers didn't seem to comment much on it being poorer relative to the HTC. It seemed high praise generally. It's mostly a matter of taste as to what interface works for you. Certainly though there's no harm in seeing what HTC's latest offering is!

Was this boot refusal after some tinkering? Or in its basic form?
Phone locked up once and rebooted. Failed to boot.

That was only on Meteor and was specific only to people in areas of poor coverage where 2G/3G changeovers happened often.

It's not just looks. It adds a massive amount of functionality, specifically the widgets. The Desire with 2.2 has about 30-ish widgets. The Galaxy S totals about 10 with 6 of them being stock Android widgets.

Almost on the right track. Here's an example of what a custom ROM can offer over a stock ROM

A2SD+ - A much better alternative to FroYo's stock Apps to SD function

Root access - Of course ;)

    Paid apps

NANO and BASH shell support for those into Linux

    Busybox

Trackpad wake + The ability to choose what you reboot to (I.e. Reboot to recovery e.t.c.)

    Open VPN

Perflock and CPU governors which can save battery power and provide much better CPU scaling.

    CIFS

DSP Manager -> Equalizer and Compressor

    Ad blocking

    Custom boot animations

    Overclocking to 1.382GHz (Desire)

Running a full Linux distro within Android

    And Custom themes of course

Yeah, I'm going to do that. One thing I prefer about the Galaxy is its larger screen over the Desire. I think this new Desire has a bigger screen now to match.
    A 4.3" screen afaik.

Reviewers always fawn over the newest thing. I admit I thought it was pretty impressive for the first day or two but it's many flaws took over.

PAMG you are once again completely wrong in regards to the SGS and seeing as you are a voice on the android forum, I find it incredibly unfair that you warn people not to buy it.

I own a SGS, and I'm VERY satisfied with it. I've been messing around with it daily for well over a month now, and I've yet to encounter most of the bugs that plague your device.

In fact, the only issue I've encountered has been the lag, and it isn't really noticeable in any JM1+ firmware. The only time I notice it is when I am in the lockscreen, and that could be (and most likely is) attributed to the lockscreen I use, WidgetLocker.

I don't like TouchWiz myself because it looks too much like the iPhone, so I use Launcherpro instead. What I don't get is why you're always throwing the Sense card out there. If it had had stock Android that would probably be horrific to you as well. Just embrace the fact that it all comes down to personal preference and the fact you're free to choose is that's what makes Android shine.

As for the few Custom Roms on the SGS, you can attribute that to the upcoming FroYo release. The dev community for the SGS is clearly there, but most are holding off until they get the FroYo source from Samsung. I seem to recall the HTC Desire community taking a few months to get going as well.

Also, if the Desire is so perfect out of the box, why are you running a custom rom :pac:

The Desire with 2.2 has about 30-ish widgets.

I see about 30 HTC widgets as listed below - is there a full list out there that we can look at and where would we download more? A pal has some like Coin Flip, Battery, Dice (useless I know but fun all the same) on the 2.1 Legend

It seems that party has an agenda and is putting people off it for no reason at all, getting worse than Iphone fanboyism

I have a Samsung Galaxy S and I think it is brilliant, it does everything I need it to, no real issues with lags, don't want to root it so waiting for the 2.2 which I am in no rush for.

I find the phone a really well built phone, I suppose some would say it is lacking a camera flash but thats no major issue for me, not much into taking HQ snaps anyway :)

To me, the Galaxy S is a brilliant device and I recommend it completely. :)
