Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

should warn you a lot of those orientation week events were over 18s. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to serve drinks.
not sure what knuts and bolts ball is, maybe similar to lock and key we had last year? people were given padlocks or keys and had to match a the key with the lock it fitted.

Haha...you're joking, right?(about the padlocks, not the age)

I'm starting up Computer Apps too, me and me mate are doing it.

Awh I was wondering what the whole Nuts and Bolts thing was ha ha, that should be a bit of crack. I dont think us Computer people actually have to go to the Helix until like 2 days after everyone else does though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭cedomination

Do we still go to the nuts and bolts thing even though we don't start til the next day?

There's usually at least one or two events during orientation week organised that aren't over 18s. Just looking at the orientation timetable there's a comedian one night, that's usually an any age event. Might be others too.

As I might be going into second year *fingers crossed*
In your first year of CA watch out for...
    -The business management game CA
-CA165 CA (its soo easy and 60 % of the whole thing)
-Maths tutorial attendance (its about 4.5% of your summer mark)

Hello everyone! Yeah, I'll be a new student this year too. I'll be the only one from the old class doing Computer Applications.

Names Robert and I'm 18. Kinda confused about the orientation schedule too. Not too sure what to make of Tuesday the 21st. The Key provided doesn't make it very clear.

Anyway, really looking forward to starting! :)

I think they're the order for people to collect their cards or something :P through alphabetical order...still pretty confusing though!

Anyone know what it means when it just says 8?

They are your tutorials. Im guessing your seeing three or so big blocks that go one beneath each other at the same time on the same day yeah? Basically you ll be split into classes (last name) and you ll be assigned one of the these tutorials to go to. On your first week dont go to the first one on tuesday unless your told to cause no one will be there.

I wouldn't rely too much on the timetable yet. It will keep changing until lectures start. Quite often the timetables won't be finalised until a few weeks into the semester.

Fear not not Computer App friends!!!! I've solved the 7 and 8 problem. If you look at the page w/ 'orientation week scheudual' on top you'll notice its numbered 1-8 and then on our schedual each event has a number in front of it :D

    Remember me I'm

    No it's not

There is a stop thats almost all to dcu.

    Try a 19A,4,4A,13A,11,11A,11B

if you know where your going and don't mind a walk, taking a 16A,16,41,33 or 31 will get your close enough.

Who here was in knuts and bolts today ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 Mayrk

New myself, thinking about going to the Toga rave, but maybe that's just cos I've been waiting far too long for a good excuse to flaunt my toga. Certainly going to the pub quiz, what's better than being in an environment in which we are expected to get drunk and act obnoxious because of it. Awesome.:D

So I messed up and missed the maths learning thing at 3pm and later found out that there was a test  Does anyone know if I can do it another day or how important it is?

These tests are for a self-recommendation for the maths learning center, i.e. for those that have difficulty in maths. It's just so that you know yourself where you stand, and it has nothing to do with your course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

I think its just a test that determines whether or not you actually need the maths learning centre, but tbh I think I failed it in first year(not sure how?), went to one lesson and then didn't bother. its only very basic maths, fairly different then what you'd be doing in the maths module in first year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭cedomination

That's good to know, I might see if I can sit it anyway just to be safe.

    Well I got 0% anyway, ****e.

dont worry about that maths test, its just to see how much u remember from 6th year and to see if ur goin to need help from the learnin centre.

    i got 15%...

  • Registered Users Posts: 63 ✭✭Jiggy

Yeah the maths test isn't really necessary, got 85 and had to repeat my maths in August so its not a great reflection xD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭cedomination

What did everyone think of that maths today? I think I get it so far.

Yeah, it was alright. With those printed notes it really is much easier to keep up with a lecturer and revise the topic later.

    PS

You could have written that as a new thread on Moodle forum :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,019 ✭✭✭carlmango11

Just floating around, found this thread.

I'm a second year in CA. Yeah the Maths tests are basically a combination of tutorial questions. If you can do the tutorials you'll have no problems with the tests.

Watch out for programming, easily the hardest subject. It's the main thing people fail. The hardest part is that you can't just study for it, it's all about understanding it

it's all about understanding it

The majority of the course is about understanding, not learning sh!t off.

Dont worry about it. All you gotta do is the past papers and you will be fine.
