Fresher's Week Query

I know this may sound like a stupid question but does being under 18 seriously narrow down the amount of nights-out, parties etc. that I can go to during fresher's week?

Not really. You can still go to events in Soc rooms, still go to hist debates.

Nights out in clubs will be a problem alright, but socs generally have events in their soc rooms til late enough, and then to the pav.

I have to say yes, yes it does. I was in the same position last year. Most of the society events that are actually in the college should be OK though.

Thanks for your help...I don't mind much just once there's something I can do during freshers week and I suppose the soc events will be a great way to meet new people etc. etc, :D

Could you not age yourself up a little bit with the use of an id which somehow came to have the wrong DOB on it? /avoids boards legal issues......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 163 ✭✭tabouli

Yeah this happened to me too... I was 17 for most of my first year and even after fresher's week it was annoying not being able to go on class nights out etc. Not very much you can do about it though! :/

OT, but I'm thinking about ordering a green zentai(morph) suit for the Monday night, green being the code for single at the traffic light night.

Good or bad plan? Will the bouncers take issue you think? I doubt it, but I'd hate to get turned away on the first night of freshers.

Well, if they don't take issue with it, it might not be a bad idea for the OP. :P

Just wondering does anyone know if there'll be a Freshers Ball this year? Or is it just the events during freshers week?

The Freshers' Ball usually happens in the first or second week of term.

    What's the freshers ball?

It's basically just another night out but bands play and stuff. Fight Like Apes and Tinchy Stryder amongst others played last year.

kmhenry how long will you be 17 for? Me until February :( I was joking with my friend that we can have our own events and exclude the over 18s :D

There's plenty of events for underagers, just most people go on thee piss rather than go on them

oh really? that's good then :) I asked someone who got in last year and her reply was "well, if you don't go out you will definitely miss out, but you can make up for it by being approachable in class" ...which sort of implied that there's nothing else to do!

Even though I don't drink I'll get an age card anyway. If I'm to try my hand at socialising (something I just don't really do) I'll need ID handy just to be sure.

Not being 18 when you finish = reason enough to do TY, regardless of how you feel about it

There are some people I know who did TY and are still underage though...

Mates 18th is tomorrow, another two at least from my year are still under for a few weeks. All did transition year. I, on the other hand am counting down to the big two oh :p

Nah, there was a girl in my class in the same situation as yourself. She still had fun. ;)

Perhaps you could accidently be given the ID of that one person in your class who looks like you, under the mistaken idea that you are in fact that person, while standing outside of the club. Of course, once you get inside, I'm sure you'll quickly be able to rectify the mistake.

Same. Another mate("Grandpa Stu") turns 20 in under a month. We give him an awful hard time.

Deighted I did TY now, turning 19 soon. Now if only my age card would hurry up so I don't have to bring my passport out.

I know some people are in a much worse place(age) than me, but I won't be 18 til the week (30th) after freshers week!!! It's so aggravatingly close!

Yarp, the hist and the phil ahve nights during the week, loads of society nights. Pubs won't check, so go on pub crawls with people, and get them to buy you booze, but the best option is deffo to borrow an ID, I was 17 last year and had one, and went outevery night, don't regret it at all

My 'what!?' was in reference to there being many alcohol free events organised for people who don't drink, since there really aren't that many of those. Also (I'm going into 3rd year), the Hist and Phil nights will need ID (since they're in clubs), but I'm with you on the Pub Crawl thing. I didn't see anyone get checked at the Phil Pub crawl last year. Also, being 20, I now feel real old.

I wonder if I'll go to these mystical 'alcohol-free' events for non-drinkers. I'm not a puritan or anything, I just don't drink, and as you can probably guess being surrounded by drunk people while not drunk isn't my idea of good socialising...

Well, for better or worse, societies havn't been able to give out free booze (or any booze) for a while now, so you'll be able to have plenty of fun during the day. But if you plan on heading out to events later on in the day/evening then most people will be locked.

There were one or two comedy gigs on last year. And music gigs.

I meant stuff like the debates... as far as I remember, there was a debate on during freshers week, there was a comedy one, with dara o brian, the phil.... think iti was freshers. I meant stuff that genuinely isn't alcohol related (ie what the societies are there for)

It's stuff like comedy gigs, debates, sports tryouts etc...

What I meant was there's plenty to do if you don't want to drink- but I didn't specify at night. once 8 O clock comes around, everyone (including me) will be hammered.

Ah I see what you mean. In that case yeah there's loads to do which isn't drink related. There'll be another Phil comedy debate also (though not featuring Dara OBriain this time)

Not a pity really, I thoguth the debate other than him was quite good last year, all he did was try and sell his book, (and tv show-Which I was pictured in from that night :P)

Lads, just go knacker drinking, its great craic.

Must do it again for the nostalgia some time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75 ✭✭Xevkin

Rather than start a new thread, I think it'd be better if I just asked for some clarification here. Got a leaflet in the post about this ENTS thing and sounds pretty fun, but I'm still a month away from legal adulthood. Are these parties and clubs going to be over 18s gigs? And if so, would a driver's licence - which has the unfortunate typo toage me two years extra, even if I'm sporting a silly hair cut - do me? And does anyone else feel the anticipation that I am? TCD is gonna be the biz :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Provo's and licences are probably the worst for getting in on, from what I hear they're the easiest to fake.

Tripod = Sh1thole TBH with a massive load of w@nkers doing security, that said underagers get in there all the time.

    Dandelion: Forget it.

Purty: I'm not sure, if you're with a load of 19YOs then you might get in.

Academy: Strict for MCD events anyways.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭fishtastico

I was 17 starting in TCD and Freshers' week was great. Granted, this was back when societies were still allowed to soak you in free alcohol from their Freshers' week stands that were made entirely of alcohol, before the wicked witch of the Junior Dean's office decided that college wasn't meant to be fun anymore.

But it should be fine if you attend some society AGMs. They still have drink there

I have a Freshers Week query!
How dressy are these things going to be? I know that guys aren't that worried about being over/under-dressed but, well, I'm not sure. For instance: they call it a Traffic Light Ball, now... does that mean that it's gonna be more glamourous than this headphone disco, or is it just a name?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Its the Academy, not exactly the kinda place where you'd wanna wear a full length dress or anything like that:P Normal clubbing attire should be fine.

Just wear what you'd where going out on a Saturday night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭gearoidof

Though obviously you should be attired in plenty of green, or the night will be wasted

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,536 ✭✭✭Mark200

For the traffic light ball last year there were plenty of people wearing just plain green t-shirts or even Ireland football/rugby jerseys... presumably because they didn't have anything else green. So the dress code (if there is any in the first place) will probably be a bit more relaxed for the traffic light ball.

The 'ball' party means nothing really.
