The 64-year-old passed away peacefully this morning after a short stay in hospital.
A native of Tourmakeady, Co Mayo, he was a graduate of University College Galway and taught briefly before becoming a full-time actor and founder of the Galway theatre company Druid in 1975.
An acclaimed stage actor, he also starred in TG4's 'Ros na Rún'.

I went out to Spiddal one evening a few years back to see if I could hear some native Irish. He was working on Ros na Rún at the time.

I went into a pub and had a few pints with the paper. In all the time I was there, the only Irish I heard anyone speak was Mick Lally when he answered his mobile for a minute! :D

He was a national icon really. RIP.

Ah...Mick was an atheist with more lines on his face than a zebra's arse. But an honest soul that was loved by many. He will be missed. If he does meet his maker I'm sure he will be forgiven - Not for his atheism - but for his acting.

I last saw him in John B Keanes "The Matchmaker" with Mary McEvoy in the Tivoli last month. A fabulous stage actor, one of the better ones we have ever had. In Glenroe and Bracken he became the man who made farming and country accents sexy again and in doing so gave us our dignity back.

A very humble and down to earth man in every way. Such a difference to the spoilt brats, fake Z-list celebs and egoistic pr!cks who seem to populate TV and film these days.

Rest In Peace, Mick. You'll never be forgotten in these parts.
