Think you're missing my point. It was as useful a statement as saying 'must be a man'.

It was useful in highlighting the overwhelming negatives the traveller community bring to greater society.

Unfortunately that's it. Judging by the everyday behaviour, reading the news, turning on the radio etc, I am not quite convinced that 'greater society' remains all that civilized.

a friend walked my dog last week and a traveller (yes it is true) stopped up and offered her a pug pup for 350 euro. she said she would expect to get a car for that. this is that latest thing i am afraid. Travellers are breeding pedigree dogs and a lot of other people. a puppy farm in Tipperaray has 600 breeding bitches. these dogs are not socialised, are not walked, they are used to breed. when they go beyond breeding they are not any use to them. they dump them and who knows how else they dispose of them. People need to be responsible and not buy from unreputable sources. A dog is like an accessory for a lot of people.........we the civilized society have created this market..............

How is this possible that nobody is doing something about it?
In my opinion breeding non pedigree dogs should be illegal. (and its not that i care that much about pedigree, but it would help to control the whole thing)

    :(:mad::(:mad:

They not only breed them, they steal them too... :/

Most Irish people dont know how to look after a dog. They chain them up in the back garden 23 hours a day, let them crap everywhere, let them bark all night etc etc. One girl I know had 10 dogs knocked down in 6 years. They honestly just kept buying them and letting them get knocked down and could not understand why.

Have you met most of the people in Ireland, and spoken to them of their knowledge of dogs?

Pedigree dog breeding does nothing to help with the health and welfare of dogs, it is a hindrance in most cases.

You just dont understand the problem and i am not going to argue with you about it on this thread.

There should be only two ways of getting new dog/puppy:
    -buying pedigree one.

(A Pedigree Pure Bred Dog has parentage that is known AND:
    • Both parents are of the same breed.
    • The breed is recognised.
    • The dog's breeders are registered to breed puppies.
    • The parents of any puppies are registered with or one of its affiliates to be bred from and
    • It has a pedigree showing at least 3 generations of parentage
-adopting homless one from the pound/rehoming.

the numbers of dogs destroyed in Irish pounds has dropped from 16,546 to 6,536 since 2005. That’s over 10,000 fewer dogs destroyed.

“Animal destruction rates in Ireland remain at an appallingly high level. On a per capita basis, we still destroy unwanted dogs at around ten times the rate, per capita, of our nearest neighbour in the UK.”
    Source: dogstrustblog.com

Ireland destroys dogs at a rate ten times higher than the UK. An average of 27 dogs were destroyed every day in Irish pounds in 2008, nearly all of them healthy.

I think it's evidedent that breeding has gone too far here. My friend took in 2yorkies that had been used for breeding, the mother is just tiny and looks so worn out from it. At least they're in a happy home now though.

But as another poster said they just get rid of them when they're "of no use" as I'm afraid seems to be the case here:(

-even if its now not releted to Galway, please dont lock or move this thread, because not many people read forum releted to animals/dog issues and people are not aware of whats going on.

The world has woken up to the extremely unpalatable truth that the health and welfare of many pedigree dogs is seriously compromised as a result of the way they are bred. Pedigree dogs need our help and they need it now.

    Wake up!

Are you saying we are not allowed to act like travellers? And the in a civil world there would be no travellers?

    I'm shocked and outraged Biko.

No I meant Walter Haszonits who breeds Portuguese water dogs in Selzthal, central Austria.

Are you seriously telling me you would only have pedigrees breed?

What do you mean by "pedigree breed" ? There is no such thing. You can have certain breed dog only if it has pedigree. If not, the dog can look like some kind of breed but can have some genetic, behavioral issues.
I dont have dog with pedigree myself and if you would read what i said properly you should notice that i mentioned two ways of getting new dog.
Buying pedigree one (with papers, cetificate or whatever you call it) or adopting homeless one -which is for sure more nobel.

We've been talking about get a second pet and as long there are dogs/cats needing re-homing I don't see a reason to pay big bucks for a pedigree (of which most are freaky looking anyway).

And they are usually ruined by eugenics and inbreeding.
Scientists at Imperial College, London, recently found that pugs in the UK are so inbred that although there are 10,000 of them, it is the equivalent of just 50 distinct individuals.

    Pedigree dogs plagued by disease

I dont see a reason too, but if somebody wants to have some certain breed dog ( irish setter?) -shouldnt buy puppy from unknown source (like donedeal?), just find decent breeders who would give you all documentation.
People doesnt want to adopt cross breed dogs/mongrels and dont want to pay for pedigree -thats why those horrible puppy farms are doing well.

-and thats why dogs are dumped like the one we all just read about. :/

I said "you would only have pedigrees breed"

As in you would only be allow pedigree dogs AKA purebreds to breed.
