It's what happens to your skin after it gets cleansed and before it gets moisturised.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,396 ✭✭✭COH

It either means you want be in an Abercrombie commercial, or it that you want to get big, but not massive, like Brad Pitt in........

I would consider him "ripped to bits" in.......

It means building muscle without actually lifting weights, so its probably something to do with prayer...

Oh yeah? It's a genuine question. It seems to come up again and again as a description that people use "I want to tone up" etc. but I really have no idea what it means. Is it just lean? Maybe we could get some pictorial examples. :)

I would put it down to looking fit :) There is a more scientific definition to it,
But i go with less fat.

    Yes.
But people think its like growing small muscles.

Look slightly muscular with less fat is what I take it to mean

Ok, thanks for the pic. That lady has a body that most women would kill for, but she may or may not be fit. Her body shape could be achieved almost entirely with diet IMO.

I had this discussion with my good lady today following her describing coconut milk as "fattening" (cosmolese for high in calorie).

It's about having muscle that is visible as it isn't hidden by a layer of fat

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 806 ✭✭✭woodchopper

It means looking like a middle distance runner not stick thin but not muscle big like a rugby player. Weighs around 65 to 75kg depending on height.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭ragg

Basically, it means not being fat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,025 ✭✭✭d'Oracle

    Is that not lean?

    I get this of course.
The real culprit is the Verb form "to tone"

As distinct from "two tone" which is goddamn awesome.
    Lip up fatty.

I don't. Would you consider the lady in that picture toned? See if someone comes on here looking for how to get "toned" and they mean like her I'd be telling them to eat very little. On the other hand if they want to look like zac effron I'd be telling them to lift a lot of weights. So what is it that you think defines toned? Is it just a low bodyfat?

    Is this girl toned?

    Is this guy toned?

They both have a low bodyfat level.

Toned to me, would be no real obvious fat. Visible muscle but not huge big veiny muscles or anything. Something like below. Although looking back Daniel Craig is quite big compared to the second guy, but he has always had a big build I guess.

    @ khannie

IMHO in your last post, the lady is emaciated and the guy is toned.

For a "toned" female, give me Jessica Ennis any day :)

I think the term 'Toned' is subjective - i.e it's a personal goal depending on whrere the client is starting from.

i.e - a relatively fit female may aspire to look like that athlethe Jessica Ennis, however, a beginner may aspire to look like Holly Willoughby for example

    http://showstalker.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/holly-willoughby-fhm-1.jpg

They're both in good shape, but I believe it depends on the persons goals.

For me though, Toned means you dont 'jiggle' when you run

Toned's just having a low body fat % and noticeable muscle/a firm look. So the model isn't, but the dude is.

And Alison Stoke is just NYOM. I'll bring something else to the table for your consideration tho...

I could be wrong but I think it was Jane Fonda that first used the word tone in the context of body shape in the mid 1980's in her aerobics videos.
It comes from 'taut' tight in a musical context or something.
Yes it's a crap word. Yes it is a made up word and you won't find it in any anatomy & physiology book but it looks like its here to stay.

Anyway I'll see your Stokes and raise you a Bazinet :)

    ah, but you will!

However we're not discussing what muscle tone actually means , we're talking about the common perception of tone r toned.

Well really i'm just here for alison stokke but do carry on.

But sure thats like asking what is the common perception of the colour blue :pac:

If I saw the word tone in an A&P book I'd probably choke on my coughed up blood

    .

She has 0 body fat and i would call her dying. No muscle tone and no fat.Instead of correct body fat content. And it is sad that any industry would allow any woman show herself like that.
Tone is when you sit down and your tummy doesnt fold :D

Ha ha, this reminds me of a recent thread on the Self Defence and Martial arts Forum where someone wanted the exact definition of what constitutes a "Traditional Martial Art".

For me anyway, "toned" is the opposite of "flabby". It has little definitive meaning, and is highly dependent on context, but most of the time when someone uses it, you have a rough idea of what they're talking about.

I would consider her ripped to bits for a woman.

I would consider the guy I posted the pic of to be muscular and not "toned". I suppose it's just a subjective thing. I was surprised at someone calling zac effron not toned. He looks like he's around the 75-85KG weight range (depending on his height) and has a very low bodyfat. A very decent physique IMO.

    edit:

This guy I would consider fairly well built and well beyond my perception of toned.

Dude, I'm only 5'8" and I'm not far off 70KG and he's carrying quite a bit more muscle than me and a similar body fat level.
