Just thought I'd start a thread for everyone coming into 1st year in september 2010.

Just a general place to discuss what courses everyones in etc.

If everyone posting could say what course and subjects they're planning on doing

I'm in Arts MH101 and I'm planning on Psychology, Computer Science and French/Maths.. can't decide which yet!

I've been accepted into finance and economics but I'm absolutely gutted I wanted finance and accounting. I missed out buy 5 reckon points.

I'm hoping some drop out so that I can get a second round offer or switch courses.

    Anyway I'm still a maynoothian.

See you there though, what subjects are you doing with it?

Doing Arts aswell :D So relieved the points didn't jump this year.

Thinking of English and Economics, and maybe Sociology (mostly to combine with the econ)

Don't panic just yet. If you accept Finance & Economics, do your exams in May 2011 and get 60% (or above) average, you'll probably be able to transfer to Finance & Accounting in second year. Call the dept of economics, finance & accounting. They're a nice lot in there!

Just so you all know, after you accept your offer you'll get a few things in the post in a few days. Info about dates and times and where to go etc

I'm going into second year finance and accounting, the two courses are identical in first year and I got an email about changing courses and the finance an economics course was one I could have changed to after first year. So dont worry about it. Congratuations on getting it :)
Congrats to everyone who got a place.

I'm a FETAC applicant and I got Arts. It going to be difficult transitioning from the lazy PLC life to University!
I'm thinking about History and Anthropology but I want to check in one a lecture or two before I make a definite choice.
I am so nervous because unlike the PLC course, I'll be going to Maynooth without anyone I know by my side to worry with! Taking the right train will be frightening enough as it is...Hope I don't get lost once I get off of it :o

Best of luck to you all guys. You're in for a treat. Maynooth is a student paradise. Had some fantastic times there and made some great friends. Get involved in everything, go to every party, and steal anything not nailed down:p

Ditto, I had a great 4 years there. Maynooth is a great place to go to college as everyone is a student in the town its self. Definitely join as many clubs as you can as you will meet a lot of people this way.
Too bad there the LA still isnt about, was a great place to meet fellow first years or bump into your Maths tutorial teacher who you had the next day at 9am :D

And remember your grades dont count until final year  Well unless you do the 70-30 thing

Some houses are nice, some aren't. However, most off campus students live there, it's kind of like campus accomm for those off campus. The Newtown Inn is a lovely pub too with a Chinese inside it! That place will be mad a few tiems a year like at Xmas.

Enjoy first year everyone. Maynooth is simply fan-f**king-tastic.

Now I've just gotta sort accommodation if I don't get student accommodation!

See ye all in a few weeks :D

You'se will have no bother making friends. You'll live with people who won't know anyone either and will want to make friends plus there's always plenty of parties at the start of the year where you'll meet people.

Join a few societies as well and you'll make plenty of new friends.

That's not to mention the people you'll meet on your course as well.

And if all else fails, you'll meet people from on here about the place. :P

There's really nothing to worry about, Maynooth is a really friendly place. :)

does anybody know anything about the on-campus accommodation? They told me yesterday that they were emailing people who'd applied for it today, but I haven't received one! Has anyone heard anything?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 113 ✭✭itchyblood

Give them a buzz. I'd say they're closed by now but if you ring in the morning they'll help you out. The girls that work in the Residence office could not be nicer.

the draw for it was done last night. ring them and they will tell you. we all rang and got accepted.

now another question, can i apply to live with my mixed friends on campus? two or 3 of us altogether

To anyone worried about not making friends, you'll make loads. In the first few weeks of term, everyone is going around introducing themselves. The amount of names you'll forget is unbelievable. Get involved as much as you can, go to all the things for orientation week, say hi to new people.

As far as I know, I don't think you have preference of who you live with. For the past two years, all of my friends who lived on campus lived with new people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Rafcam

    I'm doing Music Technology! :)
I rang today to find out about the accommodation and I'm on campus.
    I'm soo excited!

    This.

For the first two weeks or so it's totally cool to just start talking to randomers (you start getting weird looks after that).

    And remember; if you forget someone's name do the old;

    "What's your name again?"
    "Blah"
"No, I meant your second name"

I'm one of the leaders for the HEAR/DARE orientation, so I'll see you on Sunday :D It's always a fun few days.

Welcome to all the NUIM newbies! Maynooth is a great place :) And don't be worried at all if you don't know anyone when you get here, I didn't know a single person back when I started either. You'll meet people in the most random ways :) Yous will all be in the same boat so just chat to everyone you see, you'll have made loads of friends in no time!
