Group seeks reform of Leaving Cert
The Leaving Certificate curriculum needs to be recast to reflect the fundamental principles of education and to take account of current best practice internationally, a leading youth organisation has said.

Youth Work Ireland re-iterated its call for widespread reform of the curriculum following research by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) which highlights the negative effect of the exams on the health of Leaving Cert students.

The preliminary findings of the Post-Primary Longitudinal Study, carried out for the National Council of Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA), show four out of ten Leaving Cert students lose sleep because of worry.

The study of 900 students in 12 case-study schools, to be published later this year, shows a higher level of stress among girls doing the Leaving Cert according to Emer Smyth, research professor with the ESRI.

She said the findings were consistent with international research which shows high levels of stress among students taking final second level exams.

The research shows that girls spend longer on their homework than boys, with girls spending an average of four hours or more per night on homework, while boys tend to study for an hour or less, she said.

Youth Work Ireland said there is need for a much wider debate involving continuous assessment, credit systems, team working, critical thinking and industry linkage.

The group warned however that the process needs to look at the exam and syllabus in the broadest possible way and focus on the interests of young people by involving all of them in any changes.

Michael McLoughlin, director of central services with Youth Work Ireland, said “Many do well out of the Leaving Certificate but the enormous build up of pressure coupled with our persistently high drop out rates must spur on the reform process”.

“Previous reforms such as the Leaving Cert Applied, Vocational and transition year have shown that mainstream schools can be adapted to serve all young people,” Mr McLoughlin said.

I hate the fact that something this important is tucked away in the middle of an article on a different subject.

Girls have been outperforming boys at an increasing rate over the last few Leaving Cert cycles (Girls outperform boys in every core Leaving subject and Girls beat boys in Junior Cert at almost all subjects), whereas boys have been falling further and further behind.
It is amazing that with this kind of discrepancy in hours spent studying hasn't yeilded an even greater difference in results (actually, now that I think about it, girls must be atrocious at studying ).

If this report is accurate, then it is clear that the education system is failing swathes of young men who could probably do much better if they tried.

Guys kinda need to be inspired, or to have a firm goal to achieve.

The LC isn't the most inspiring of exams.

Children don't magically sit down and start studying; they do so because they are inspired to (and often ordered to); if the system is failing to make boys want to study enough to pass their exams then there is a failure in the system.

You can't save everyone, but if enough boys don't even care to try then there is most likely a problem with the system.

Not being that far out of my school years, maybe I could shed some light on this. When i was approaching my final year of the leaving cert I was acutely aware of two things. The leaving cert was not the most important exam/moment in my life and regurgitating information, which would be forgotten within a month and never used again was a huge waste of my time.

I wasn't the only one who had formed this conclusion either.

I know a lot of people who got 500+ points in the leaving and got honors degrees in university, but there isn't a hope in hell I would call some of them smart.

Boys tend to do more extra curricular stuff at that age like sports,working, drinking etc.

Its well known that men have higher average IQ but also a larger range of IQ scores(more geniuses but more dumbos than women). Men still win 95+% of Nobel prizes , its no conincidence.

And yet men excel and rise to the top in every industry and area. Even cooking.

I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure it's cuz girls' small brains can't see the bigger picture, and so panick that the leaving cert is the be-all and end-all, forces them to work like that.

Don't get me wrong though - I love having a receptionist that I can go to with any question about geography or the intricacies of the progressive future negative interrogative Irish tense.

Classes need to be more interesting for lads to pay attention. Heard theat somewhere, where as girls will just keep quiet and listen.

I did the LC 2 years ago, didn't do great by any means:o! I for one just can't pay attention if I'm not genuinely interested in something! Classes were too boring, after school study was too boring.

I would walk out of the school at 7 in the evening and confidently say that I picked up nothing during the whole day:eek:!

It needs to be changed, thats my opinion:mad:!

No, this is not true and quite ignorant in fact. The worst boys will always be worse than the worst girls. But many guys have no intention of acting up or playing around.

The competition among boys is far greater for other types of things. The leaving cert is kind of lame as a "competition" though, that is why boys don't like it.

I think the leaving cert is stupid, I wasted many hours on that that I wish I never had. I think the girls in the mixed schools are a lot better adjusted, smarter and without emotional issues.

The whole education system is geared against boys. In 13 years of education I only had 4 male teachers.

Boys aren't being allowed to play properly at break time with all these health and safety rules so they are full of energy and aggression in class which hinders their ability to concentrate.

I went to an all boys school up until the inter cert and the female teachers we had were hopeless with us. I then went to a mixed school for the leaving cert and found that while most of the female teachers were still hopeless with boys they had much better results with girls. If our education system is run by the wimmens I'm not suprised that boys are suffering

Yeah, I used to love playing soccer at break-time in primary school, that was the best, so much exercise and stimulation. In secondary school it was more like: "time to move from sitting down in the classroom to sitting down at the lunch table and thinking of something stupid to talk about".

If girls are doing worse than boys then it's seen as problem that needs to be fixed but not when it's the other way around. There are a **** ton of grants available to women simply because they are women yet that's not seen as sexist.

The problem is the Leaving Cert itself; lacking in function, correlates poorly with performance in college, rarely do subject choices in the LC matter for college entry.

It's crap.

College entry should be based on a range of criteria, not just a bunch of passive learning exams.

How right you are SugarHigh. There is such a push towards getting women interested in science and mathematics, they even give girls special grants to try to incentivize them into doing it.

I lately saw some horse**** about girls adding to the fields of science and mathematics by their presence, like to offer a more "balanced" and diversified part of it that the males wouldn't offer. Like offering a scientific reasoning or basis behind it instead of OBVIOUS discrimination against males. It would be more like the males would bother less with their work or be distracted. And if this WERE the case, then why not try to push males into female-oriented fields just as much?

No, many of these people are so stupid that it is hard for me to imagine how they actually function as people, how they get up in the morning and tie their shoelaces etc. They're fools.

That's not true.

This is an issue which has been known about and has concerned the SEC/DES for years.

The gap is less wide, by the way, in examinations which have a project or continuous assessment element. Boys seem to do better with short-term manageable tasks rather than one long term goal. Boys also do better with girls in their classes, while girls do better alone.

In the next 50 years there will still be a majority of men owning women in every sector, example: girl in my class studies like a race horse on crack all day and I studied a good bit myself but nowhere near her, she would go to the library till 11 o clock at night, she would even skip meals to study, she ends up getting less marks than me and do ye know what!?
