Would you not consider a different calibre?

Nothing wrong with them, just more options on Centrefire regards actions, barrels, stocks etc

Not saying it can't be done, but you could be left with a rifle nobody will buy off you if you decide to sell

    Out of curiosity,
    1. What way were you planning on building the rifle?
    2. I see you recently sold a .17HMR with custom stock bought from John Greene. Would you not have kept this if for nothing else an action to build from?
    3. Are you planning a custom build from every aspect as in action, bolt, barrel, stock, inletting, bedding, etc?
    4. Would John Greene not have been an option when buying the stock or did you decide to do all this after the sale?
    5. Was the sale the starting point for something fully custom?

Sorry for all the questions. Trying to get an idea of what you have in mind.

i want something fully customed from start to finish this is a rifle i will be passing on to my son so he can use it as a starting point for rifle shooting. after a couple of years shooting rabbits and that i will be buying him a rifle for the deer but thats another day. was talking to john greene only thing is that he said he has so many to build at the moment that i would be waiting a bit. was just going to check with fergal white the cost of having one built

What age is your son? Perhaps a .22lr would be a better call?

A full custom route is very expensive.

What action do you intend using?

I'm inclined to agree, to be honest. If it's for yourself and something your son can use, go nuts, but if it's primarily for your son, I'd say don't invest too much. bear in mind that it's reasonably likely that even if he is interested as a child that he'll drift away for quite some time when he reaches the end of primary school and secondary school. It's certainly what happened to me. Hopefully he'd come back to it though. Nice to see you helping him into the sport though. Hopefully he'll be far from the last generation to enjoy it.

Why would a .22lr be better over a wmr or hmr? is it purley from a customizing point of view that is would be cheaper and easier to do or is it that you consider it a better calibre? If he wants to teach his son to shoot with a view to getting him a deer rifle in the future surley the likes of a hmr with its longer range and flatter trajectory would be better.

I know nothing about customizing rifles so i wasnt bein a smart arse askin that!

If you go full custom .22lr you will sell easy(most common rifle in Ireland)

if you go Full custom .204 .223 .22/250 6XC you will sell easily too.
.17Hmr and .22mag are rimfire and limited availability on actions etc.

You have a .22lr group who will by the .22lr full custom for comps.
The .17HMR & .22mag are a mongrel grouping in competition and can not compete unless against them selves.

Full custom, ACTION, BARREL, Stock, Mounts, Scope etc you are getting into serious money.

Look at defiance machine actions McMillian stocks, kreiger barrels etc.

Fair enough if you have the money and the interest.(and want to give it your young lad)
I do feel that it could be a white elephant when it comes to resale, beautiful and quirkey but not easy sell.

However if the OP wants to keep it for ever then go ahead by all means.

I was trying to alert the OP to the fact he could be left with a custom rifle, that nobody would want, only he would ; if he ever went to sell.

    My 2 cents
