Just an Update on this -

The Irish Times downloaded perfectly this morning - first time in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping that whatever was wrong is fixed...

This started happening to me again. It appears to be because the feedsportal changed the format of the links they use on the non-"frontpage" feeds.

I have a workaround that will get it working until there's a proper fix or I can see exactly what they've changed.
    • Go to "Add custom news source" under "Fetch news".
    • Click "Customize builtin recipe"
    • Select "The Irish Times" and click OK
    • Click "The Irish Times" under "Available user recipes"
    • Near the bottom you will see
       (((url[69:].replace('0C','/')).replace('0A','0'))).replace('0Bhtml/story01.htm','_pf.html')

    • Change the "69" in that line to "70", leaving the rest of the line as it is
    • Click "Add/Update recipe" and then "Yes" to replace.
    • Schedule the new custom recipe for download instead of the built-in recipe (using "Schedule news download" just like when you initially scheduled The Irish Times for download). You'll see it listed under "Custom" towards the top instead of under "English(Ireland)"

That worked perfectly. You have just saved me from having to read the Indo every morning !!

Would I be able to buy books from www.amazon.de or www.amazon.fr if I bought a Kindle for use in Ireland?

PC World in Ireland (and maybe Currys?) selling Kindle WiFi for €149 and the 3G one for €199.

Am v interested in buying a kindle. I think my main usage would be to download books for access when travelling. Many of these would be the kind of classics that should be available for free on sites like guthenburg.

I'm not v techie so would really appreciate if someone could tell me how this would work. My domestic internet access is via a meteor dongle. Would this support the download onto the kindle for free? Would I need a wifi or a 3g version to do this?

    Thanks for any advice

You can download to your PC and transfer it to your Kindle. The WiFi connection won't make a difference unless you get a router. The 3g connection isnt necessary as you have a net connection.

I know very little about the I note that it can store 3500 ebooks. If in a couple of years you are changing devices can you transfer the ebooks from your old kindle to its replacement model?

can you swap ebooks with other people who have kindles

    thanks

I'm not a Kindle user - yet - but have been reading up on it. AFAIK the answer to the first question is yes - I think you can register up to 5 (or 6) Kindles to the one Amazon account - so other people can share your purchases, and, should you lose your Kindle or upgrade, you can reload anything you have bought via download again from Amazon - you go through the procedure as though purchasing it again but it should recognise that you paid before and give it to you free. This also means you can delete books you have bought, to make room say, and later get them back again. Amazon seem to have thought this out pretty well.

About swapping - not sure - pretty sure you cannot just copy purchased books across - think there is or soon will be a mechanism to share to some degree or maybe for a limited time (2 weeks?) with others just like you could with a printed book. Obviously they have to make it that you can't just give it away to everyone.

I also found out that if you lose your Kindle you can send, via Amazon, a doc file to the unit asking the finder to send it back to you or whatever (and also blocking them ever being able to purchase anything).

hi - firstly i want to apologise if this has been answered already.....but i am going to be in Northern Ireland in a few weeks and was going to purchase a kindle through amazon.co.uk.

can i purchase books from the amazon.co.uk website then??

    thanks in advance.

Only if you register a UK (or NI) address. I switch between both sites without problem - see here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=69586712&postcount=11

Some people who have done this seem to still have had problems after about 7-8 books. I haven't - but I only buy books from .co.uk from my pc, not from the kindle, and I download them to the kindle later. I rarely have wifi/3G turned on.

I updated to version 3.1 this morning, the update did not take long.

Real page numbers are handy. You need to press menu to see what page you are on.

Juke, re the above quote, i have a Kindle coming next week and wondering how i can order my books from the uk store not the .com europe, as not all the titles that i am interestrd in are available.

Do you download then via wifi, or plug in the kindle via usb?

    Thanks

I order from my pc - then log out of amazon. Then I turn on wi-fi on the kindle, just long enough to download the books and turn it off again straight away. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm using the .co.uk site mostly, these days, without problem.

So should i re register the kindle to the .co.uk account??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,673 ✭✭✭juke

No - you'll just need to input a UK location in the settings, on the .com site - and it will then prompt you to go to the .co.uk site

Okay so do you click the transfer to the kindle and then pay or save to computer and then transfer via USB?

I click to transfer to my kindle. The log off. Then turn on wi-fi on the kindle to download.

Hope this works for you :o

Okay, next time, I will give that a go... determined to go via .co.uk as Amazon US is more expensive!

Maybe it is for UK published books - I have found the US site a bit cheaper for what I want - usually.

Re downloading - AFAIK, the reason Amazon do not allow you to download to the PC and then transfer to the Kindle via USB or WiFi which seems to be a logical thing to do, is that they want to retain control and avoid people just giving the books to someone else. So the download always comes from Amazon itself via WiFi or 3G. This arrangement does have the advantage that you can always download 'your' books from amazon for free to any Kindle or PC/MAC with a Kindle reader later on. I think you can transfer from PC via USB or WiFi if you use the Calibre software.

I copied the last one via USB and they didn't email me! :D My work IP address I think is UK, so if the worst case happens, I will transfer them in work!

The last book I bought was 2.99 pounds in the UK and in the US store, it was $5.71 so that is a difference of 48p :D Definitely use the UK store for me...

Jesus, all that is unnecessary and very confusing for people.

Your amazon account is shared between amazon.com and amazon.co.uk. You can login to both with the same login details. So buy a kindle from amazon.com with your amazon account and have it delivered to Ireland. Then login to amazon.com and change the country associated with the kindle to a uk address.

Now just login to amazon.co.uk with the same account and you can buy ebooks from the uk kindle store. You can switch country back and forth if you want to buy ebooks from the US store.

    Sanity at last :)

Saw this on http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/cheap-ebook-readers-kindles#kindle: £132 3G Kindle with code (usually £152)
Special code gets you £20 off

Amazon's Kindle is the eBook breakthrough application; it's moved the technology away from just books, into newspapers and more – and unbelievably the 3G version allows free web browsing when you’re abroad, even when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi.

Discounts are rare, but you can currently get £20 off £150 spends at Tesco Direct* making the 3G Kindle £132 – sadly it won’t work with the standard Kindle, so it's still £111.

To get the offer call 0845 600 4411 (option 1, then 2) and quote the code TDX-KYRA.

The offer's only available over the phone until 11.59pm Thursday 23 June and you'll need to collect it at your nearest Tesco.

Tesco has said there are currently 800 3G Kindles in stock; if it runs out 1,500 more will be available from Thursday. It may add more - we'll keep you updated here.

Didn't think this was worth starting a new thread, but would like to get some opinions on the following:

Mother in law has an unused Kindle 2. It has lived in a drawer since she bought it and turned it on day 1. Since then she has got a HTC Flyer with the Kindle app and is therefore convinced she will never use the Kindle, so has offered it to me for £50.

I had been in the market for a Kindle anyway, so my question is: does the Kindle 3 justify the price difference of c. £100, in terms of battery life, display, functionality, size etc, or should I grab a bargain for £50 and essentially have the same thing? pretty non-technical and basically just want to the device for travelling.

    Thanks for your help

50gbp isn't a bad price at all, however as it hasn't been used in such a long time I would have concerns that the battery may have developed faults. While this is a possibility, as li-ion poly batteries don't like not being in use, it's up to you to weigh up that risk for what is a fairly decent price. You could always use that point to haggle down the price a bit :P

I'd test it out with an eye to accepting it for £50 if it checks out. The Kindle 3 is undoubtedly nicer. It's considerably smaller and has a more modern feel to it. However, on a linear scale there's no way it's worth the extra £100, so it would only be worth it if you're the type that likes fancy new things.

I think she's making a bit mistake swapping if for a tablet by the way, so you may want to swoop while you can. I have both and there's no question as to which I'm going to read on.
