Due to a fatal crush yeaterday which led to the death of nineteen people, the organisers have decided to discontinue the event which attracts well over 1 million people each year.

    Taken form The Guardian:

Do you think it is a complete overreaction? I think it is. The planning was seemingly very poor with only one entrance and it was held in a town with a population of just 500,000.

I had really wanted to go to this at some stage in my life.

It's a free event right? I don't think it's an overreaction at all.

Im sure it will be back but under a different name and format.

In my opinion I think the organisers are right to cancel it forever. It would always be remembered for the deaths of those 19 people, not for what it was initially started for.
A terrible, terrible thing to have happened.

In no way an overreaction, there was enough trouble finding somewhere else to host it when berlin couldn't fund it anymore. It was supposed to be cancelled then. This incident seemed to be the last straw. People i know who went to it in duisberg said that the set up was ridiculous and mentioned the tunnel specifically. Tragic, but not unexpected

19 people are dead, definitely not an overreaction.

This sort of thing wouldn't happen at Hate Parade.

I think it's an under reaction, they should jail the organisers for endangering and taking people's lives....hands up who wants to tell a parent their child is dead and that it's just an accident, nobodies fault, might as well of been there own....

Techno Viking was with the **** Parade. His sort wouldn't be too into the Love Parade.

Berlin probably moved on from the Love Parade so this might be the end.

A few ppl die in an accident, (tragic yes, unavoidable yes) but should we now all go back and hide in our cages?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 426 ✭✭poodles

I was at it twice in 2005 and 2007.

This wouldn't have happened if it was on in Berlin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,349 ✭✭✭✭starlit

why did they call it the love parade?

Awful thing to happen. Imagine if the likes of that happened at Electric Picnic or Oxegen? And the panic those poor people must have gone through before they died. I don't think they should cancel it forever but they should organise it better in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,597 ✭✭✭anniehoo

What a tragedy..19 people dying! Definitely not an over reaction but what a ridiculously stupid place to have a festival of that size.

I was at it in Berlin in 1999 and it was amazing, but it was held in the streets up by the Brandenburg Gate.Everyone was free to move about and come and go as they pleased. Most people were hammered and/or off their face but i didnt see one bit of trouble the entire weekend.

Maybe theres a new organising committee or something as the old school ones wouldnt have allowed something of that size (theres always 1million+ at it) in a bloody tunnel with one exit.

    Shame :o

yes very true. they should have had a limit of the number of people who attended though as the accident could have been avoided. shame really, they need to adhear to saftey measures which needs to be improved if they were to ever hold an event like that again. better they have it on solid ground where oxygen was held on muddy ground.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,556 ✭✭✭Slunk

Was at this in 2008 in Dortmund. Was cancelled in 09 because Bochum felt there would be too many people for the town to cope with. There was alot of meetings before this years and doubt wether it would go ahead.I hope it is not the end for LP, hopefully they will learn from this and organise it better in the future. Id say it will be a few years before theres thought of another one but I do hope there will be.

I think they tried to have one in Leeds back in 2001 or so and it had to be abandoned to abandoned for a nearby field site due to safety concerns. Berlin is one of the few cities where it could work given the layout of the streets.

they took a shortcut and in hindsight just cos everyone else was doing it didn't make it right

with numbers of 1 million or more people at the party it's not a huge number to have died even in a tragic circumstance

not like hillsborough or the fire that blazed thru that club in Dublin

also why should the organisers be jailed or be forced to call it a day, nobody forced these people to attend and it falls on themselves to be safe and stick to designated areas when doing so

If im not mistaken, that was the designated way to get to the event. It wasnt a shortcut.

Second paragraph of the times article if you bothered to read it

Just an excuse for spongers and wasters to run wild.

For those on their mobiles, the second paragraph:
Mass panic broke out as thousands of revellers packed into a narrow tunnel, which was the only designated entrance to the free techno festival, being held in a former freight railway station in the city of Duisburg, western Germany.

what are you on about?? what shortcut? they were killed because an event for over 1million people only had one entrance - through the tunnel which was the official entrance.

a similar public safety offence to the police packing the liverpool fans into that one pen at hillsborough or blocked fire exits at stardust.

Whats it been free got to do with anything? Do you think scumbags cant get 200 quid to go to oxegen and run wild and cause trouble? They'll just sell some extra drugs to get the ticket money. This event is ten times better than any crap put on in Ireland

Not taking sides, just a point of order:

Organisers of any function be it free or charged, have a legal "duty of care" towards anyone attending.
That includes provided adequate entrance and exit abilities, ensuring that they are adequate for those possibly attending and also having in preparedness, contingency plans if the numbers attending, increase or decrease.

    End of point of order.
    I'm outta here! :D

Seems to have attracted a fair share of freeloaders who just want any excuse to run wild.

    You always get them.

    Then blame everyone else.

Were in any of the news reports is there a mention of people running wild? People were just trying to get to the event.

I agree, the organisers had a duty of care but whats it been free got to do with it? Free or paid entrance they still have the same responsiblities, and past free loveparades have gone off without incident for years. This could have easily happened at a paid event so I think you point is gone out the window.

horrible tragedy, disgusting to see all the smart comments in here.
guarantee if it was a rock/non-electronic event there'd be less small-minded mongos trolling with stupid ignorant trash...regarding the death of 19 human beings no less...
there were more than 340 seriously injured in this event, aside from the deaths, which was solely held to promote love and peace.
for the organisers of such an event to have to live with that on their conscience will be absolute torture.
my heart goes out to everyone involved.
idiots, fcuk off somewhere else with your ignorant bull****.

Cop on, show some maturity and bother to read the articles associated.

The fact that freeloaders and wasters attended is completely irrelevant. All festivals and events have freeloaders. It should have been better managed saftey wise for routes and access points and therefore the freeloaders and normal citizens coudl have at least caused chaos in a safe environment ;-)

I was in dortmund too and didnt witness any of this. Are you saying if free event was held here you wouldnt get the odd waster at it. I cant possibly imagie something like that here. Then youd really have scumbags wreckin the place and ruining it for everyone else.

try monegros, they manage 40,000 krusties and there's rarely problems.
    i suspect police blockage frankly...
