    What is your budget?

A remington is like a modular system, you can upgrade to your pocket.
As all American stuff there are oodles of upgrades

CZ is a slightly cheaper option, accurate but less options available.

Personally I would go for a VSSF II remington if budget permitted, they come standard pillar bedded and heavier barrel.

I have seen them for €1200 new recently

However a SPS is €750 ish a CZ is less

Budget of about 1350 but this is also for scope.

Currently (and only recently) have a CZ 527 with the synthetic kevlar stock.

    picture.php?pictureid=5805&albumid=939&dl=1270907342&thumb=1

Pleased as punch with it. Takes anything you feed it (of course with varying degrees of success). Comfortable fit and not heavy. No need for any major modifications. Maybe a trigger replacement (if wanted) but i find no need to do this with a hunting rifle. Its for the foxes and bunnies not shooting groups on the range.

They vary in price form €1200 to €1400 depending on where you buy. There is also the laminate stock and then the standard stock versions. These start in and around the €700+ mark (i think).

    Ssay your budget 1350+50 =1400

I'd spend €900 on Rifle and €500 on scope.
Or €500 on rifle &€900 on scope

The scopes you can upgrade easy.

by the best rifle you can afford IMHO
Then by a scope to start off, upgrade your scope to your pocket.

Most scopes ~€300 second hand will get you to 2-300 yards
I would not skimp on rifle.
If you could up your budget to €1700:eek:

You would have a rifle you would be happy with for years.

Just an afterthought, but a brand new Tikka in Stakelums (Thurles) at the mo runs around €1000, so with half decent scope and mounts you're looking at €1450 or so. A second hand one with scope, bipod, etc, etc could be gotten for your budget.

Worth a call if nothing else.

Good advice. I have an sps at the moment and to be honest I was lucky, I know a few lads with the sps version and they had wild groups with them. But it's down to the stock, an upgraded stock will bring them groups right tight;) Both are great rifles, but accuracy is the most interesting thing in shooting and with a cz v's a standard sps your chances of smaller groups are much to an advantage with CZ.

The CZ 223 Varmint with the kevlar stock comes with an ali bedding system already in place in the stock. Shoots very well out of the box.

Go for the cz 527 varmint.. Both the kevlar(hs presion) or the laminated(comes with pillars) stock will see you right and the barrels are far superior than a remington barrel..
The trigger is easy enough tweaked up to your liking and the action is magazine fed.....

    A CZ varmint retails ~ 1000

A VSSF II retails 1200 but has a atainless steel barrel and action

The remington barrel on a VSSF II is not the same as an SPS
26" barrel free floating & fluted

I got a 2nd hand CZ 223 varmint with laminated stock last year - very pleased with it - got nice groups @ €200m last weekend at 'my range'. It 's a bit heavy to carry - few hours in the fields on foot and you notice that you are carrying ;)

The remington VSSF II is not light either, especially with a Bipod mod and tactical rings and a NF scope.

However, I can handle the extra weight for the extra accuracy.
It's quite happy bunny bashing towards 400, I have not pushed it further yet.
A bunnies head is quite small past 350 ;)

Have to find a large field yet that has bunnies to test a long range shot. Sofar I have been using my own target for my .22 and .223 :D

My biggest field is 655 yards, But I need a spotter to see the strikes!

And possibly a 12-42 NF as even @32x a target is quite small at that range.

Ammo availability at the mo is also an issue, I'm awaiting a batch of RWS from intershoot.

Then I will try push the envelope of my abilities.
I've only a few .223 Hornady left and nobody seems to have moly coated .223 55grain at the mo!

Thant would be a shot - and defo need a spotter as it is difficult to see the feckers at that distance? Have you shot long distance targets (paper ;)) with the 223? What kind of groups do you get?

It's the spotters job to spot the miss!
and tell me 3" right 6 " low etc

Then I adjust my aim, and Hopefully RED MIST ;)
You can see the bunnies as they are brown and the grass is short. however if you miss you would not see the strike as you are focused on the target and not on the area around it

That'll make you feel better when the lad with the CZ pips the bunny before you. At least you can go home and admire you're "pretty rifle".

You're a funny guy, like a lad i was speaking to recently telling me of his amazingly accurate "Remington" rifle. It was an AICS stock, custom barrel, pillar bedded, built on a Remmy action.

Now no doubt an accurate rifle, i seen his groups, but the only thing left remotely resembling a Remington part was the action. Therefore in my book, not a Remington. A custom build on a Remington action is more descript.

Now i'm not knocking Remington ............... okay i am :D .............. but the rifle i'm having done will no longer be a Savage, but a custom build on an existing Savage action.

I have spent under €300 pimping mine to date.

    Karsten cheek riser €57
    Recrown €90
Bedding can't remember, it was a small amount as the VSSF II is almost perfect out of the box ;)

    Timney €120

Hearing all the farmers recommend me to other farmers to thin out bunnies

    Priceless!
If only i could get a sponsor to pay for my ammo!

Thanks for the advice and entertainment?. Was out shopping today and visited a few shops. After looking at a few I had my mind made up to get rem vsf until I was offered a second hand tikka t3 tactical with a night force scope and moderator for 1850. This seems like a great package for the money so might push the budget a bit. Comments please! Also can you advise what I should look for in rifle and scope to insure both sound as I have only bought new before. Thanks in advance

that sounds like the deal of the century, take the arm and all off him:D
i have a tikka tactical and it is a great rifle very accurate with most ammo but extremely accurate with proper stuff.
that combined with a good scope like a nightforce well your on to a winner

Sounds a great deal, i would go for it.

With the scope i would look for the obvious marks or dents that indicate a drop or bang. Rotate elevation, windage and paralex turrets to ensure all turn free, smoothly and without resistance. Check the crosshairs are moving in sync with the adjustments you are making. Also pay attention to the glass. Check for scratches, marks or any "dirt" or markings on the lenses. Remember that Nightforce scopes comes with a lifetime warranty regardless of whether you are the first or 50th owner.

With the rifle i would firstly have a general overview of the rifles outer condition. Check the stock and barrel for pits, scratches or any other significant markings that may indicate a poorly aintained rifle. Cycle the bolt a few times. Feel for resistance or any "snags" that may prevent a clean and fluid cycling of the bolt. If any are found remove the bolt and check along the area for spurs, dirt or any other obstructions. Check the breech with a light. Look for markings and scratch marks that may indicate over zealous and not so careful cleaning methods. If a bore scope is available make use of it. Of course have someone with you to cheack out items for you if you are not sure of exactly what you are looking for or at. Check the crown for marks. You'd be surprised at the amount of people that think cleaning from the muzzle is a good idea. Finally check all the screws and bolts in the gun. Make sure all match up to each other. As in they are all the same type. If one is chrome and the others black then one was removed, lost or broken and replaced. Ask why, and was it done by the previous owner or a registered gunsmith. Last thing you want is a rifle someone decided to "play" gunsmith with regardless of intention and ability.

There are other questions such as usage, history, treatment, etc, etc but you will ave to rely on the honesty of the seller for these answers.

Anyway best of luck with it. You made a good choice.
