It doesn't matter which currency we use, we'll still get ripped off. The price we're paying won't look that much...

Wouldn't make a difference as I wouldn't have any of either.

I think we should have the British Pound. It would bring us a little step forward to re-uniting Ireland to the UK.

It might be economic madness to base a decision on this, but the punt was much better looking money. I remember going into shops back in the day with a single pound in my pocket and walking out with two litres of milk, a choc ice, a loaf of bread and a small box of washing powder. I didn't pay for any of that stuff, but it still felt like real money back then.

Irish money was sh*te.... well, the coins anyway - they were far too big & made little sense... a 5p piece was the smallest, there were two different sizes of 10p, one of them was smaller than the 2p piece & a 1p piece was almost as big as the smaller 10p piece.

I liked the design of the 50p piece, but the Punt was always worth f*ck all when you went to exchange money to go anywhere. The Euro is a lot handier.

    have euro will travel

If we went back to the punt, it would likely become viewed internationally as a weak currency.
And our external debt needs to be paid off in terms of euro's.
So, if we reverted back to the punt, we would have to spend much more money in paying back our debts than if we stick with the euro.

When we have our debts fully, or almost fully, paid back then I would like to see us get the punt back. As somebody said, it's good to be able to devalue our currency to make ourselves more competitive (although poorer) overnight.

    Bring back the punt!

The Irish currency was stronger than the Euro! Not economically, I mean it was physically stronger! You wouldn't see the classic Irish five pound note crumbling into something resembling used tissue the way you do today with the current pathetic five euro note.

    Euro is handier for travelling.

But I miss the old one punt note, where you could go up to the shop and actually buy the shop and every person in it.

Euro for me. Maybe I'm being unpatriotic but the punt is in the past. To revive it makes no social or economic sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 230 ✭✭Ghall

Don't think it would make any difference, prices would still be too high in punts or euros!

So ****ing what? People were happy then. Money destroyed Ireland's mentality.

I'd like the 50p coin back but looking back those coins were so big compared to the euro coins.. it's also so much handier for price compassion's etc etc rather than just assuming that the sterling and punt were the same thing as I did when I was a little gosson

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,551 ✭✭✭SeaFields

euro is so handy for travelling.

You know exactly what your paying....on the downside you know how much you're being ripped off at home.

would it not be harder to pay off the debt with a weaker currency?

Nah, we can just pull a Zimbabwe. Print off all the money we need and devalue our currency to fúck. We'll all be billionaires, but a litre of milk will cost a trillion punt.

The Economy grew with the Euro, people got rich, the Economy ****ed up and now we're all miserable ****s because we're too used to having money! We used to be happy being a moderately poor working nation; logic.

I don't know about you, but I'd much rather our peers being happy than us being a economic and political minded country, it's depressing, and if you don't think so than you're just deluded!

The only difference was more people had money. As for the crash it happened because people are incapable of voting for comeptent politicians.
I'm not sure what that means, it's almost hippyesque. Other countries seem to operate without being overtly economic or political mibed.

Governments don't borrow currency, they issue bonds.. Which means they never have to buy other currency to repay it's debts. So it's like getting a euro for the bond and only paying back the equivalent of eighty cent after it's devalued.

I think. It's been a fair while since I studied this..

Dearer imports, harder to repay debt and multi nationals (90% of our exports) will leave.

They'll want the Punt equivalent of the Euro bond amount though.
Bonds like the ones they issued yesterday pay a %, think it was 5% yesterday.

The bondholders want 5% of the Euro amount, not 5% in An Punt Nua.

Exactly, but what I'm saying is (for the 3rd time) it made us think that we really really need money, even though we were as happy as Larry in the days of the punt! So now that we are losing it it's all doom and gloom, if Ireland didn't turn into an economic hotbed in the first place we would be the depressive poor people we think we are now. How often do I have to spell it out!
    fontanalis wrote: »

To be quite honest, it wouldn't changed two ****s if had to have voted for someone else, it would be the same or a lot worse, politicians these days don't contribute anything but stupidity these days, so what's the point?

Imports dearer means we buy more Irish goods and less money leaves the economy.. Which is good. Exports are what drives production so it's more important. I've explained why debt is cheaper to pay back with a devalued currency and i'm not too sure on the last point.. If they're repatriating profits, it's a bad thing and they might leave. If they're just producing goods, I don't think it matters to them much.
