I just rang sky to cancel my hd sub due to the structure change due in the package, and found out that from September my 2 mix pack is going up €1 to €25 a month.

i only got me sky in this year, i am exempt from any price rises for the year?

€25 for two mixes, daylight robbery! I currently have 2 mixes for €10 a month until Christmas and that's all it's worth.
Here in Italy Sky Italia will give you 2 mixes plus all of the football for €29 a month!

and dont forget sports is going up 8-10%!! then another 2€ approx in janurary!

A price increase on the mixes too? We are already paying much more than the UK

Sky increase their prices every September
€25 for two mixes is ridiculous

    Cancel.

I bet you watch the pay channels less than 2% each. Get more BBC & ITV on skybox without a sub and Irish TV via aerial

My wife went to cancel that package last week , they offered her the same package for €10 a month until Jan 2011,( and next months payment will be only €1) ,
when January comes ill just cancel and use a combination of freesat channels and Irish DTT .

Cancel it. It's just not worth it. I had the sports and HD sub package, and it was coming in at over 60 euro per month. Rang up to cancel in early June when they subsequently downgraded my subscription to the bare minimum but was told I'd have to stay subscribed until september (12 months after I got the HD box) and to ring back in august to give them 30 days notice. Counting the days!!

    30-odd for me (mid august).

So, why do sky have upwardly only price increases?

Just got the HD box. The lack of decent HD content is appalling. I'm sure I've got a month to cancel the HD sub before I'm locked into 12 month contract.

Because they are greedy baxtards and because the Irish public are soft and accept it.
Someone has to pay for John Terry's £160,000 weekly wages and its Joe public sitting at home in his sitting room that is the soft target.

Outta here,I only ever wanted it for 24 and a few more bits but have installed FTA and so far so good. They are taking the P***!Repeats all the time. When are RTE etc going digital?

You should already be able to pick up RTÉ One and RTÉ Two from the DTT trials going on at the moment. All you need is a suitable aerial and digital ready TV or STB. Official launch is set for October.

I had resigned myself to keeping Sky so that I could use the distribution to other rooms and have 1 - 4 without paying for additional decoders / boxes / cables when RTENL goes DTT.....

......but if they're increasing their already OTT charges for endless repeats, "reality talent contests" and crap "drunken idiots abroad" programmes, then I'll rethink it.

I think that's what it's gonna take, folks.......thousands of people saying "f**k off - you're not ripping us off anymore".

    "Sky care"......my arse!

i would say 80% of people wont even realise its increasing, the direct debits will keep on going out of their accounts!

Thats true SNAPS. If you did a straw poll on the street the majority of people haven't got a clue what they spend on pay tv so the 50 cent increase wont be noticed. I have sky myself and pick and choose what I watch from the various mixes, the problem with fta is the quality of programming certain channels churn out (yes you itv-if I hear or see any more about x factor I'll explode) I know theres a large amount of rubbish on sky but it's easy to change channel.Even so another price hike isn't warranted, maybe if it was offset by a reduction or scrapping of hd charge then it would be justified.Anyone on top tier packages tends to get hit with the highest price increase so I can see a lot of reductions in subscribers there. The only way Sky will take notice is with a drop in revenue and to actually listen to customers.
Slightly off topic, the best/stupidest excuse I've heard for scrapping sky was "getting upc cos there's less ads on upc" LOL

There was a price decrease not too long ago. Strange that they would hike it again so soon after. The price of everything in general is going up.

If only there was somewhere else to get the football

I think there is a small bit of truth in that perception.

Sky have an awful lot of poor quality and infomercial style channels aimed at the UK market. UPC would have a lot less of these as they don’t have the bandwidth available (thankfully!) and they are of no interest to Irish viewers. So, the average amount of adverts stumbled upon when flicking channels would be less on UPC.

Also, the first 20 or so channels on the UPC channel guide would have more quality / ad-free channels when compared to Sky e.g. BBC1/2/3/4, UTV, Channel 4.

That was only because the UK VAT rate dropped. They had no control of this, and did not make any less profit.

So we should probably expect a further increase in January when the UK VAT rate goes up again?

Yes, it is going up from 17.5% to 20% in January 2011.

So, at the current prices [which will rise in September] Sky World should go up from €88 to around €90.

The helpline service when you ring Sky for anything whatsoever is absoutely dire and that is usually after holding for an inordinate length of time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,709 ✭✭✭✭Cantona's Collars

Sky World is not 88 euro it's 73 p.m-still bloody expensive though compared to what's payed in UK even taking exchange rate into account.

Sorry, I meant to say Sky World with the HD pack (+€15).

    plus €15 for hd=€88?

the sports are going up by 8%, so i would say that along with 50c per mix will be a 6-8€ rise in september!

im completly fta now for Uk tv, DTT for Irish and have cyfra+ and still al jazzera sports for all my sport (football). im keeping an eye out for a half decent sky italia sub, but prices currently dont justify it, so cyfra+ is the way forward.

Someone has to pay George Hook's fee! Bet he doesn't boast about that on the ads!

They usually add on 1 euro or 1.50 to sky world no matter what rise is put on the other mixes.

If you break down the irish sky package you will find that you are paying way more for stations that are already free to air.

get a combined digital terrestrial and satellite pvr from armstrong and you get way more bang for your buck!

Rte digital, bbc & itv digital services along with virigin 1, Dave, Quest and yesterday on freeview!

You will wonder what the hell you were paying sky for in the first place!

Also if you have a sky box and you cancel sky, they block all channel 4 stations, you have to remove the irish card and restart the box the regain access to freesat channels!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,709 ✭✭✭✭Cantona's Collars

Slightly misleading there Andy454-freeview only available as overspill from UK along the East coast, not much good for someone in Kerry.Fair enough Rte digital broadcasting at the mo,we may wait and see what other channels they gona carry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,140 ✭✭✭John mac

Dont forget that Irish dtt isn't available everywhere either!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,709 ✭✭✭✭Cantona's Collars

In an ideal world we all would have free telly but it's a fact of life it has to be payed for one way or another be it subscription or tv license.A lot of posts here about foreign tv, but subscriptions are being paid for them aswell so that argument is blown away.As an example if you want to watch premier league you pay somebody (don't mention dodgy internet streams) be it sky, upc,or any of the foreign tv companies so fta is ok if thats your bag,you get what you pay for albiet by more than you want to.

bah I've had enough too - getting the ubber shaft I still can't understand how they charge us more than the UK?? wtf?!

Here lads, when I cancel, I get to keep the box and dish so what options does that leave me with with regards to FTA or whatever? any HD free content floating about? I have the smaller size dish if that matters?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,688 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

remember most people will say "ah shure whats 50c" while many more don't realise they can have freesat+ becuase they think sky+ is a sky only thing. Also when told about manybe not being able to have RTE recorded, most don't realise that all the Corrie/X factor/eastenders are all on UK FTA Channels anyway and also in HD.
Sky have an absolutely terrible monopoly and peoples foolishness is unbelievable in this respect. What recession???
Lastly, remember the boom when everyone got "Sky" in, it was thebuzz word and people used to look at me as if I was some tight bas**rd because I had FTA even though I had HD and all the channels I wanted and a dish that didn't rust after 6 months and 2 big holes into my sitting room wall...............

You keep the box and dish and its the exact same dish as for FTA. You can keep getting channels via sky box (set it up for UK to stop all these channels that won't work) or get a freesat + box (humax one works well with one input) so you can record away. Attic aerial might do for DTT depending where you are
HD FTA is BBC HD and ITV1, BBC1 HD is coming soon and C4HD is rumoured to be FTA sometime in the nearish future (TBC)

They have me by the short and curlies with the football. I am willing to pay for it, call me a fool if you will but I have very few pleasures in life and that is one of them. for the record, I only get Sky Sports 1 as that along with RTE covers the majority of games and is enough to keep me happy.

Could someone suggest the alternatives to Sky Sports? What are my options if I go the FTA route and alternative dish for the footie?

Interestingly, you can get Sky Sports on the iPhone for €7 a month and hook it up to your TV. Might give that a try, I'll still be paying sky but you can't complain at €7 a month.

I have taken this off a page from fb thas is an email that the creator of the page recieved could the fact that it says sub prices in ireland and england are independant that we could refuse to pay the vat increase in january as we are not in the uk??? I know there isnt much we can do about the increase in september cant wait to be finished my year so i can at least get rid of the hd sub!!

Email response from Sky about prices, sent from help@skycustomersupport.com:

"Thank you for your e-mail addressed to Jeremy Darroch regarding the prices for our UK and Eire customer's. I've been asked to investigate and respond on his behalf.

The pricing of Sky's services in the Irish market place is determined by a number of factors, including the costs of carrying out business in the Republic of Ireland, the competitive environment and the commercial environment in which the Sky Group operates as a whole. The cost of conducting business in Ireland differ from those in the UK, for example, VAT rates, costs associated with the retailing and installation of Sky's services, and the costs in acquiring content specifically for the Irish market, including separate Premier League rights deal and payments to BBC, C4 for inclusion in channel packs offered to our customers.

Our current pricing reflects the various costs in providing a quality and value service to our customers.

Subscription prices in the UK and Ireland are priced independently from one another, that is they are not tracked to one another.

The Irish package is now only more expensive in relative terms based on fluctuations in the exchange rate. This means that it is the same price as it was before - Irish customers have not seen a price rise, nor have the UK customers seen a price reduction.

When the Euro is strong, it appears as if the UK subscribers are getting a better deal, and when it is weak, it is vice versa.

I hope that this information helps. Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at the above address."

Quote from the above mail: "When the Euro is strong, it appears as if the UK subscribers are getting a better deal, and when it is weak, it is vice versa."

That person is talking out of their arse. I remember our subs rising when the exchange rate was in our favour.

I actually got that response from sky, not the person who set up the facebook account.

More people should email jeremy.darroch@bskyb.com and complain about this rip off.

    Fixed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,210 ✭✭✭20goto10

What a load of arse. If we are independent from the UK (as sky subscribers i mean :)) then why does he then admit that the price fluctuates based on exchange rates?

I rang and emailed sky back when the Euro was in parity with Sterling and they told me the exchange rate has nothing to do with their pricing so they would not be lowering Irish subscriptions to come in line with the exchange rate. Now the Euro is taking a battering they are saying the complete opposite, that the price has to come up because of the exchange rate? Have I got this right? Have they given a reason for the 50c increase?
