I'm on the same Eircom package as you and it's ****ing sh1te.

I've changed to vodafone 7mb and am just waiting for it to come through.

I had enough of eircom they're incompetent arseholes, and that was the last straw for me.

Btw i was talking to a techy guy that's in the internet service business and said to stay away from wimax because they're absolutely dreadful and are in serious trouble losing custom, etc....

I also contemplated changing to Wimax too. However I would consider checking out this thread first: Imagine Wimax

Where are you located? I have been upgraded to Eircom's NGB (Next Generation Broadband) which isn't perfect but certainly a bit of an improvement. You check out here if your area will be upgraded anytime soon.

it may not neccessarily be your broadband speed, it could be your 'ping'. run a speedtest here and post it. For no lag gaming you'd probably need a ping of no more than 25 or so.

I don't lag at all but i can never get a four bar connection and considering the amount being paid for the 'service' ( i speak loosely) it should be much better than it is.

Well Wimax is actually a company called Imagine that changed their name for reasons that you can guess......

I don't know what the vodafone coverage is like where you're living at the moment.

The package you can get with them is 7mb and free landline calls for up to an hour. Basically the same way you're eircom one works. Only difference is this package is 45 quid as oppose to eircoms rip off price of 60.

ya sound similar to ericom free landline for 59 mins then hang up and ring again lol but was 60 euro so voda fone sounds the same as wimax 7 mb free landline so is it good for xbox live vodafone

Remember that in a one on one the host has a massive advantage that he'll see and hit you first .

Also Eircoms NGB is preety good, I'm On 5MB and it's good. Of course I'm never going to be host for a Ground War but I think they're bumping people up to 8mb according to their package

Also if you're not getting full bars, is your NAT open?

I certainly hope Vodafone is good for xbox live.

Was talking to another guy i know that works for vodafone and he plays live on his home connection and gets 6.7mb constantly and plays with no lag at all.

Time will tell, but i'm glad to see the back of eircom.

Ping is the delay it takes in your information reaching you from the exchange as far as i know.

33ms means it's 33 milliseconds of delay which isn't much at all.

My ping is 88ms so count yourself lucky.:pac:

    Go to www.eircom.net/speedtest.

That's sh1tcom's official speedtest. Post up your results.

fine thatks for the info ill prob choose either wimax or vodafone but ppl are bad mouthing wimax for some sort of torrent crap dunno much bout it will see about vodafone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,596 ✭✭✭AIR-AUSSIE

yes you can't download torrents if you're on wimax. But if you don't know what they are you prob don't use them so it'd be nothing to worry about.

Have a look UPC as well.

You should also maybe post your problem on the xbox forum as theres probably pple there who have solved your problem. theres a chance it is not your connection... I only have a PS3 so not sure if its a Xbox set up issue

Your ping wont change , when you go to vodafone , in fact i'll nearly bet that it will get worse.
Its still the same line just a different price.

No i know the ping won't change but Vodafone are easy to deal with and if you ask them they'll reduce your interleave so you're ping gets smaller.

    Isn't upc is satellite broadband?

If so bad weather can mean bad connection from what i've heard.

    Not for me.

I'll get back to you when my new connection is up and running. Touch wood it's grand.:D

    PS I'm from Kildare.

AFAIK, Ping and Upload are the two most important stats, not the download speed

Vodafone connection came through today just to let you know.

Solid so far and the customer service is leaps and bounds ahead of eircom.

    Very very helpful.

I thought there customer service was a joke , i was with them since migrating from bt and the line was terrible (not their fault, eircoms) but vodafone didnt have a clue what was wrong.
Clueless idiots is what i think of them , have you seen the vodafone page on here.

    There's your answer right there.

If the line is **** it has nothing to do with vodafone it's an eircom line.

Tbh i'm not listening to customer feedback anymore. I done the same thing with eircom and they turned out to be the biggest joke of a company to ever grace this island.

My connections fine so far so long may it continue.

Its cable broadband, so not affected by weather.

    UPC formerly known as chorus

I have the 15mb line from them and have never experienced any lag

The point is any line problems are not vodafones. They're eircoms. That's my point. So why pay over the top prices at eircom to recieve a service you can get at Vodafone?

I just don't see the point myself.

The connection's only temporary at the moment because eircom knocked me off when they got wind of change of service provider. Typical arseholes.

Vodafone have me on a temporary line and will know when the switch is complete.

Even the line i'm on now is steady albeit a bit laggy on MW2. As i said though it's only temporary until the 7mb line comes through.

Here's hoping it doesn't lag but as you rightly said it's an eircom line so it's to be expected.

so how is xbox live gameplay better

It's as good as my old line but seeing as this one is only a temp line i'm sure it can only get better when the actual line comes through.

Vodafone have just brought over my 4mb line from eircom until the router is delivered and everything is sorted. It's been less than 2 weeks since i signed up so it's moving swiftly.

Can only see it getting better as my speeds are perfect.

Ping is slightly higher than eircoms but i might give them a ring in a few weeks and ask them to adjust it for online gaming.
As i said before they seem ( to me anyway) to be easy to deal with regarding customer service.

Or, i might pop over onto the broadband part of this messageboard and ask the vodafone guys to do it for me, if i give them my landline.

So all in all same service so far as eircom for a cheaper price. Happy days.
