Match Betting: Kerry 1/6 Limerick 11/2 Draw 11/1

    TEAM NEWS

Kerry make two changes to the team that started the victory over Cork for Sunday's Munster Final. Anthony Maher comes in for Micheál Quirke at midfield while Darran O'Sullivan replaces David Moran at left half-forward. Otherwise the team remains the same.

The Kerry Senior Football team to play in The Munster Final on Sunday is as follows:

    1. Brendan Kealy (Kilcummin)
    2. Marc Ó Sé (An Ghaeltacht) 3. Tommy Griffin (Dingle) 4. Tom O' Sullivan (Rathmore)
    5. Tomás Ó Sé (An Ghaeltacht) 6. Mike McCarthy (Kilcummin) 7. Killian Young (Renard)
    8. Seamus Scanlon (Currow) 9 Anthony Maher (Duagh)
    10. Darran O' Sullivan (Glenbeigh /Glencar) 11. Declan O' Sullivan (Dromid Pearses) 12. Donnacha Walsh (Cromane)
    13. Colm Cooper (Dr Crokes) 14. Kieran Donaghy (Austin Stacks) 15. Bryan Sheehan (CAPTAIN) St. Mary's

    Subs:
16 David Hennessey 17. Padraig Reidy 18. Barry John Keane
    19. David Moran 20. Micheal Quirke 21. Daniel Bohan
    22. Kieran O'Leary 23. Adrian O'Connell 24. Niall O'Mahony
    25. Pat Corridan 26. Jonathan Lyne 27. Johnny Buckley
    28. Paudge O'Connor 29. James O'Donoghue 30. Aidan O'Mahony.

In a bid to bridge the 114 year gap since Limericks last Munster Senior Football title, Mickey Ned O'Sullivan and his selectors have kept faith with the same fifteen that started v. Waterford in the semi-final four weeks ago for Sundays encounter against All-Ireland Champions Kerry in the Munster Senior Football Final in Killarney. Twelve of the side that started last years Munster Final v. Cork get the nod again this time while Brian Scanlon, James Ryan and Andrew Lane will start their first final.

LIMERICK SENIOR FOOTBALL TEAM V. KERRY –
    1. Brian Scanlon (Gerald Griffins)
    2. Mark O’Riordan (Croom) 3. Johnny McCarthy (St Kierans) 4. Andrew Lane (St Senans)
    5. Stephen Lavin (Adare) 6. Stephen Lucey (Croom) 7. Pa Ranahan (Ballysteen)
    8. James O’Donovan (St Kierans) 9. John Galvin (Croom)
    10. Padraig Browne (Fr Caseys) 11. James Ryan (Galbally) 12. Seanie Buckley (Capt - Drom Broadford)
    13. Ger Collins (Milford) 14. Ian Ryan (St Senans) 15. Stephen Kelly (Newcastle West).

Substitutes: Conor Ranahan, Shane Gallagher, Eoin Joy, Conor Fitzgerald, Eoghan O’Connor, John Mullane, Cormac Joyce-Power, Diarmiud Carroll, Raymond Hayes, Garrett Noonan, Seamus O’Carroll, Conor Mullane, John Cooke, Barry Fitzpatrick & Eoin Fitzigibbon.

This must be the most low key build up to any provincial final in years, not a pipe out of the Kerry boys (probably waiting for Croker in September) and Limerick fans probably wary of recent Munster final history when all that was earned was moral victories. That won't suffice on Sunday however and i fully expect to Limerick to give Kerry socks of it for the first 50 minutes. They certainly have the winning of certain areas such as midfield and in the half back line, such is Paul Galvin's loss to Kerry. Still its hard to see past the Kingdom, even if they don't perform they have more than enough up front in Donaghy, Gooch and Declan O'Sullivan to see them home. Limerick never seem to get more than 12-13 scores against the better opposition - that won't suffice on Sunday, so unless Ger Collins and Ian Ryan can ripple the Kerry net at least twice, its very difficult to see the staus quo being upset.

Kerry will win this comfortably. Sorry Limerick people you will have to wait another time to win a munster football title.

Just curious, on what do you base this on?

Its Kerry, All Ireland champs against Limerick who are a mediocre football team that haven't really done anything in the championship for the last few years.

But Kerry don't really get going until they reach Croke Park. Kerry have struggled in the past against so called weaker opposition, you only have to look at their games with Sligo and Antrim last year. Add to the fact that a Munster title is Limerick's holy grail where as to Kerry its just another bit of silverware. Limerick's recent clashes with Kerry in Munster Finals would also suggest that it will be a relatively close run thing.

    1991: Kerry 0-23 Limerick 3-12
    2003: Kerry 1-11 Limerick 0-9
    2004: Limerick 1-10 Kerry 1-10
    Replay: Kerry 3-10 Limerick 2-9

The earliest game was six years ago. Who cares how Limerick or Kerry played six or seven years ago.

Caring doesn't really come into it. Its relevant as both teams have 6/7 players from '03 and '04 playing on Sunday.

Kerry didn't have Donnaghy back then, they also had Dara O Cinneide and Dara O Se on the team aswell. Completely different teams.

No, they're not. Kerry had Marc O'Sé, Tomás O'Sé, Tom O'Sullivan, Mike McCarthy, Declan O'Sullivan and Gooch Cooper. Tommy Griffin also made a substitute appearance in 2004 final and 2005 semi final. Limerick had Mark O'Riordan, Johnny McCarthy, Stephen Lavin, Stephen Lucey, John Galvin and Stephen Kelly playing for them in both finals

Im a big kerry fan, but kerry dont always .. how do I say this but live up their expectations! Limerick won the division 4 final this year thats great for their confidence, they have what it takes to win I think, will they be able to keep it up.
would it be unfair to say they may want it more than Kerry :o Its their good chance to break the 114 year gap.
It would be great for the spirits of the county and Limerick Gaa supporters aswell.
Either way it will be a cracker of a game Im sure. :D

Limerick are +6 with the bookies. Thats free money. They were +8 against cork last year which I backed very heavily, free money also - they only lost by 1.
Not sure are they capable of winning in kilarney, a replay wouldn't be a bad result. I can tell you one thing, they won't be stuffed down there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,385 ✭✭✭✭D'Agger

Should be a good game - certainly wouldn't rule Limerick out, sure Cork only barely beat them last year by a point.

Disappointed to see Darran O'Sullivan starting - think Barry John Keane deserved a start after shining when coming on in previous games, he's a more well rounded footballer than Darran imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,798 ✭✭✭✭keane2097

Kerry at 1/6 are a terribly price, this game will be far closer than those prices suggest imo.

Agree with Paul, would like to see how Barry John would get on starting a game rather than coming on with twenty minutes to go, and this would have been an ideal time to test him.

I also think Darren is a very poor wing forward.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭aidan24326

I think Limerick had their chances to beat Kerry a few years ago and didn't take them. I can't see Kerry slipping up on Sunday, although I agree with the general consensus that it won't be a hammering or anything like that. Limerick have been one of the more unlucky teams these last few years. They should have beaten Cork last year and had them beaten the previous year only to commit suicide in the last couple of minutes.

Kerry will be well warned though that this Limerick team are hard to beat, so I'm pretty sure Kerry will be taking this one very seriously. That alone should ensure that Kerry are sufficiently tuned up to win, even if not entirely at their best.

I think the main motivating factor for Kerry is the break they'll get to rest up after this game should they win - it's something they need.

It's been said countless times by myself and other people on the GAA forum - this Kerry team's on the road an awfully long time. They know how hard last year was on the bodies, going through the qualifiers and they'll push themselves as much as possible for 70mins against Limerick to avoid having to play an extra 210minutes or so to get to the same position.

would love to see limerick win as they deserve a munster title, they should have won it last year. but i can't see it happening, hence why kerry @ -6 is part of my weekend accumulator :D

I'd be fairly surpised if Kerry beat that spread.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,492 ✭✭✭MementoMori

The thing about the spread is that Kerry could easily get two or three goals with the full forward line, especially if Donaghy and Gooch click.

Very hard to see past a Kerry win but the manner of the performance will be what's interesting about this. Very hard to go from playing Division 4 football to playing Championship against one of the top teams.

Barry John Keane probably slightly unlucky not to get a starting spot but he's still young.

Minor match at 12 is fierce early especially for people travelling any distance. i.e. me:(

If Limerick were playing Cork on Sunday i'd give them a great chance of winning a Munster crown,Limerick footballers always raise their game for Cork. However i feel when they play Kerry they can't motivate themselves enough to beat the Kingdom. There has always been a healthy respect between Kerry and Limerick with both counties following one another in GAA over the years and i feel Limerick are at a disadvantadge in the football when they play the Kingdom and for this reason alone i expect Kerry to win by 4 or 5 points. Still i'll be hoping Limerick will win on Sunday and i'll be proved wrong with my prediction!

Granted they are a Division 4 team but they are far from a mediocre team. This Limerick side make it difficult for any team they play. In championship they always do themselves justice but they are funny in the way they hammer no one and get hammered by no one. The thing that annoys me most about people writing off Limerick is that most of the people that write them off havn't a clue how good Limerick are and most of them have probably never seen them play. Tony Davis is the only Sunday game panelist to give them any bit of respect.

If the like of the dubs, Galway and Mayo were stuck in the same province as two of the best teams in the country for the last five years I wonder how they'd have gotten on. John Galvin is one of the finest footballers in the country and Ryano is a class act as is Ger Collins. Seanie Buckley, Stephen Lavin and Stevie Kelly are all good footballers. I don't think they will win on Sunday but they will give the Kingdom hell on Sunday.

I don't think there's anything wrong with starting the more experienced fella, I reckon Barry John is going to have a long career in green and gold but I think O'Connor usually does the right thing with his selections.

Can't see Kerry being complacent about this one, hense after their uplifting win the last day, I'd imagine they will strut their stuff & win by 6 pts or more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,346 ✭✭✭✭homerjay2005

kerry have learned enough from the past and i think will win this one. anything else would be a huge shock.

galvin a huge loss, but we have enough in the tank surely to see this home by 4 or 5 points.

I actually don't rate him as a tactician at all tbh, never have, but I suppose this isn't the place or that discussion.

I have a feeling Limerick might sneak this, as long as they dont give away any soft goals. The striking hurlers will make a big difference. I also think they will dominate midfield, John Galvin is as tough as old nails.

read eamon fitzmaurices diary of last years final and you may say different. the detail they went to get cork was unbelieveable, they totally nulified their main players and the tactics were spot on. dublin was the same, kerry totally wiped the floor with them. Jack is an amazingly astute man and he will have studied limerick alot before tomorrow.

Cue Tadgh Kenelly/Paul Galvin/Kerry are a shower of filthy thugs posting for a number of pages by the Cork contingent.

I don't personally think Jacko is a tactical marvel, but I do believe that he's fantastic at setting his teams up. His tactics can be quite simple but it's the way the tactics are drilled into every player and practiced until they're absolutely perfect that I admire.

When Donaghy caused havoc with the high ball into him in 2006 it couldn't be dealt with because the wing forward line and midfielders practiced for hours outside of training on delivering accurate cross field balls into him. By the time Kerry played Mayo in the final that year, the players knew exactly where to put the ball for Donnaghy, and could put it there inch perfect.

Breast of duck to both teams but would love to see Limerick winning as they have came so close over the last while..

Without Paul Galvin in the Kerry team, i am a little more hopeful than i otherwise would be. If Limerick can put two decent halves together then we have a chance. Problem up to now in big games is we fall away in the second half. Come bursting out of the trap in the first half, go 6 or 7 points up but then fall back into shells in the second half. We need to be ruthless. I expect us to try blitz Kerry in the first half - if John Galvin and Jim Donovan can win the midfield battle (and i believe they will) it lessens the supply of ball into Cooper and Donaghy. I expect Stephen Kelly to act as a fourth half forward to try curtail the surging runs of Tomás O Sé. Quick ball into Ger Collins and Ian Ryan will be essential, if its slow and laboured then Kerry will gobble it up all day. We'll need to get at least 14 scores if we're to come away with anything, so Ryan, Collins and Kelly as well as half forwards Seanie Buckley and Padraig Browne will all need to chip in with scores. Actually the only thing that does annoy me about the team selection is the constant placing of Padraig Browne at wing forward. He's a half back and nothing else. He has no attacking radar and runs down blind alleys. His deployment at no. 10 has never worked in previous matches so i'm bamboozled as to why he's retained there. Either put him half back or dont put him anywhere!

Tomorrow is your chance boys, near misses and moral victories no longer cut the mustard. Time to stand up and do yourselves justice!

spot on. its pure ridiculous. this day and age where most counties have away shirts anyway and both of these counties have them. the camera work on tv3 is awful enough without this stupidity. all boils down to stubborn county boards playing hardball with each other.

Sickening thuggery from O Se. That should be a straight red, he came late with an elbow across Kelly after he'd struck a point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

The Ref is having a laugh. Tomas O Se should be off the pitch by now, instead he hasn't even got a yellow.
Limerick have been good up to now but the wind is a big advantage.

In fairness to Aidric, he's dead right that Tomas should have been sent off by now.

Limerick playing well, especially John Galvin and Stephen Kelly who have both been excellent.

I said it during our games with Cork that Maher is nowhere near a Championship footballer - he's been absolutely shocking again today.

He has connected with Kelly's face twice with the elbow and not even a yellow. He then yellows Galvin for a bit of handbags, inconsistent stuff and frustrating for players. I'd have preferred a bigger lead at half time, that wind is serious as seen from the kickouts. Still Limerick are playing well and it's still open.

Ref is a complete joke!! Everything soft goin Kerrys way!! O se should be sent off already and he's not even booked. Kerry frees bein brought forward for interference and Limericks not vein moved for same!! Probably has cost Limerick 3 to 4 points more of a gap.

I thought he gave soft frees to both teams tbh, but Tomas has certainly been extremely lucky.

As the half wore on Limericks style seemed to change a bit and they had less success.

Kerry will go on to win with the wind at their backs I think.

Kerry never change jerseys the sly hoors.

Think Mayo gave up changing jerseys against them because the favor was never repaid.

Ever since they got hammered by meath in 2001 in their away they haven't been too inclined to change.

Ya they need to get back to playing the corners with Ger Collins. The scores are going to be harder to come by in the second half so they need to be clever with possession.
