Thats what I did today, took the card but not the money, when I was at the checkout I ran back outside but obviously it wasnt still there. (my mind was elsewhere at the time)

it's gotta have happend to other people, do I just contact my bank and give them details of atm location and time and they will refund me? or if some guy just took it Im just out of 20bob and bank wont do anything?

If someone after you took it, it is gone.

But if noone used the machine for more then 2 mins the machine would have taken it back and it would be reconciled to your account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,879 ✭✭✭Coriolanus

The machines are supposed to suck it back in if you don't take it. But you're **** out of luck if someone got to it before it was taken back in. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,554 ✭✭✭✭alwaysadub

If it was taken by someone, which is very probable, nothing the bank will do.
If no one was around, sometimes ATM's will suck the money back in if it's not taken within a certain time frame. Well they used to anyway..

If noone took the money it should go back to your own account (if this was one of your banks ATM's it should be close to immediate, if it was a different bank's it'll probably be the next working day after processing, so Monday night/Tuesday morning). If someone swiped it, it's safe to say it's gone I reckon.

Any ATM I use doesn't give me my card until I take my money.

Most probarbly if its not collected after like 30 seconds the money retracts back inside the ATM and you can argue with your bank for the money back.

Once I was getting out 100, and the machine spat out 2 50s. When I went to grab them only one came away in my hand and the other stayed stuck in the machine, unnoticed by me. As I walked away, the girl who was next in line to use the machine came running after me with my 50 euro! Really restored my faith in human nature, and as an added bonus, she was quite hot! :D

Yes it flattens it, sure what the heck .. :p

happened me 2 weeks ago, sickened, contact your own bank not the bank of that atm, if the atm was your own bank even better.
They put in a claim type thing to the branch of the atm machine, if the machine is up 20e you will get a refund. can take a few weeks though either way.
If the machine isnt out your fooked.

This happened me before. I withdrew €200 from an ATM in Dunnes and did my shopping. When I got to the checkout I opened my purse and it was empty. I nearly died! The girl at the checkout said the machine would suck it back in if no one was behind me. I rang the (permanent)TSB the next day and they said they'd check it out but I really didn't think I'd get it back. Turned out the money was back in my account in a few days, thank God.
Would you believe I did the same thing again a few weeks later:confused:, the man behind me in the queue called me back, dacent chap:).
Some machines give you the money before returning your card and others do the opposite. If you're distracted and are used to using the former, you can easily forget to wait for your money.

Btw the machine wasn't a Permanent Tsb machine.

What really? For every ATM in the country? I thought the whole point of machines giving the cash before the card was that people are more likely to forget the card than the cash. Must be different depending on what bank you're with.

its hardly a crime to find free money. They wont let ya near the cctv anyway.

its frustrating - happened me too - never got the money

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,150 ✭✭✭kumate_champ07

ye I heard about the sucking back in thing but it was outside the tesco on camden st in dublin at 6.15pm! there wasnt anyone behind me at the time so not sure what happened during the 30seconds or so afterwards. my banking 365 tells me I'm down 20 tho I didnt use an ATM affiliated with my own bank so perhaps I'll have it appear in my account next week if it was sucked back in.

a guy told me today that people used to take out 100euro but carefully remove 60euro and allow 2 20notes to be sucked in again and they get the full 100 refunded!

I feel dirty having used the word sucked 3 times in 1 post, eww thats the fourth one

If someone was behind me at an ATM where I took my card and not my cash and they seen my money still there and took it rather than calling me back, I'd consider them a scumbag and I'd definitely consider it stealing.

Big difference between finding money and grabbing someone's money and pocketing it when you could have called them back.

the money isnt going to get credited in your account , you need to contact your own bank to get it sorted.
It gets sucked back in after a very short time, wouldnt be surprised if thats what happened.

Does your card have a chip on it? (like a visa / laser card)? they tend to be held by a different part of the card reader.

OP I used to work with a crowd that fix ATMs, you'll need to phone your bank on Monday morning, some banks do automatically reimburse you at midnight but quite a few don't so you end up having to chase them for your own money :(

They'll probably get you to fill in a thing called an ATM dispute form, your card will have it's own unique ID so they can verify it against transactions at that ATM by date / time.

I strongly suggest you contact the bank ASAP though as I've dealt with customers before who had to wait over 6 weeks to get their dosh back

All of the above is assuming that some swift fecker didn't take the cash on you (the time out period is usually about 30 seconds before it gets pulled back into the machine)

    Best of luck :)

yeah but the OP did not notice anyone behind him.

some person probably walked up to take out a few bob. And seen money hangin out of the machine.

Free money. dear christ. i wish it was me. (i would have gave it back once I SEEN THIS THREAD THOUGH):D

You don't think people would have their friends pick up the cash and they get a refund?

It's gone in the same way as dropping it out of your pocket.

    Had some close ones.

Something that escaped my attention at first, and is a pet hate of mine; the term "ATM machine". ATM stands for Automated Teller Machine. If you say ATM machine you are effectively saying Automated Teller Machine machine.

a pet hate of mine is when people point out insignificant things that are very obvious when the truth is no one really cares.

When in reality we just mean ATM machine and no one cares if it's off by a letter.

But what's the point of acronyms if people just say the the words that the letters in the acronym stand for?

    AIDS syndrome
    EU union
    AIB bank
    TD dáileach
    MI infarction
    R.I.P. peace

    and so on...

I'm surprised that so many people forget to take the cash...I mean that's the whole point of going to the ATM. It's like going for a piss and forgetting to piss

Not on my starving student budget! I grab it out of the ATM, afraid it might suck it back to pay for some rich fat cat as a bailout for a failed US investment bank.

I am not a bank employee. This advise is without warranty. For professional advise ask the bank next Monday.

Above scenario is correct for NCR (AT & T in Irl) cash dispensers with the Sparkassse Savings Bank in Germany. It is probably valid for your bank.

The server does not debit one's account until the money has been taken from the ATM.
If you have online banking you can see if the transaction went through or is pending. At another ATM You could check your balance.

If there is a discrepancy you should visit the bank who own that ATM on Monday morning and just ask the staff to help out.
All transactions including those cancelled and unfinished are logged by the ATM and the bank server.

If there is still a problem you should ask this bank and your own bank for advise. Their professional information is much better than most people on this board.

I did it at an ATM in Centra once - came back when I realised I had no cash on me, left my phone number with them, and sure enough they had €40 extra the next day and called me to come collect my dosh.
