Pursuant to the requirements of the above, notice is hereby given of the proposal to construct a
    2.040 km long tarmacadam Cycle Race track (4.5m wide) located on a site in the southern part of Corkagh Park (beside the Green Isle Link Road and the Camac Valley Caravan Park). The track also includes a 743 m Junior Circuit for younger cyclists. The main elements of the scheme are as follows;
    • The cycle track in the park provides an off-road and safe racing experience for young cyclists. Cycle racing on public roads is currently seen by Cycle Clubs as an obstacle to the development of the sport because of the safety issues for children, due to greater traffic volumes and the competition for road space.
    • The site of the track will be enclosed with a 1.2 m high timber post and rail fence with a hedge and will have a gated access to prevent unauthorised access.
    • The proposed site for the track currently has excellent road access and nearby car-parking, which will allow it to operate as a National facility and become an important Tourist and Sports amenity within South Dublin.
    • The track can be used as a National Road Race cycle training facility.
    • The track would provide an additional facility and is hoped will attract many visitors to that part of the park, particularly tourists at the adjacent Caravan Park.
    • In addition to Cycle Racing, the track can be used for leisure cycling and as an additional walking route.
    • The site surrounding the proposed track currently consists of managed grasslands which will help to screen any hard surfacing when viewed from other parts of the park.
    • It is envisaged that when completed the facility could also be used as a Traffic School for teaching young children with particular emphasis on safety and best practice.

all the turns look a bit crazy

Wouldn't something like this give much better racing?

    Emailed SDCC on the matter

According to last week's Clondalkin Gazzette, this 2km track is going to be built this year.

Depends on the aim of the track. Turns are a lot more fun for kids. Bumps also fun, but I didn't see any mention of them :(

The concept is great, but it would be better if it was near Sundrive track so you could hold multi-discipline events. I suppose Corkagh is very accessible, but just like the NAC you really need a car to get there.
Fair play to SDCC, they have a high tolerance for cycling, a lot of cyclo-cross events have been held in their parks in recent years despite the damage in a few spots.

For adults, this'd be a great place to practice criteriums if it's flood lit, where else could you get that kind of practice in?

Missed this thread last year. This looks fantastic!

It will will primarily for the underage riders and youth. They should be starting the construction pretty soon.

.We (the broad cycling family) have a number of projects at an early stage for velodrome, a dedictaed cycling center, track, road circuit, bmx and a bmx course in limerick.

you have all probably heard about these already

Indoor velodrome proposal is worthy of it's own thread, so I've moved the relevant posts

I cycle in the park quite regularly for lunch. Beats sitting in office for sure.

They are well underway with this development with what I can see it looks like the foundations for the track have been layed. The earthmover is still up there today 03-Aug-11 so still abit of heavy construction to do.

I think it would be ideal for teaching kids road safety and how to cycle on a main road with confidence and competence.

I'll probably give it ago a few times when it's finished, but I like the route I take at the moment the position of the track is a little too flat for my liking.

Yeah it is taking shape alright, looks like there will be a large loop with a smaller one within, slight incline too. Again, fair play to SDCC.

I've checked out the plans that Slideshowbob posted and with a total track length of 1297m it's a good length. It crosses where I usually cycle and with those fences I will either have to detour a bit or cycle else were. I obviously don't mind doing either and really please that they are doing something like this. The more developments such as this instead of apartment blocks and supermarkers says I. The kids need things to do far more than I need to keep a routine.

Though as I said the track is a good length so I think I might reconsider what I said in my last post and make it my lunch time route.

Sounds good for kids. It's a bit short. You'd be lapping it every 3 minutes without killing yourself.

Anyway, what about a poll: How long will it be before it's covered in glass?

When they laid a cycle/foot path in Griffeen (the part with the running track) there was broken glass all over it the first morning it was finished.

Ah lets try to be a bit more possitive, its a great idea, ive never been to the park but my sister lives beside it and says its very well kept, think ill head over do a bit of fly fishing and check out the progress:)

I haven't told my kids about this yet, for fear of weeks of "are we nearly there yet?".

I like the bendiness of it. Very exciting. Mini-crits!

Anyway, are we nearly there yet?

A pic http://twitpic.com/6gkz1u of the new surface in CP. I think this is on schedule to be finished in the next 6 weeks.

With this and the Jammy Track we should have some good facilities going forward...no excuses anymore for not winning medals and flooding the pro scene with Irish guys!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

Apparently it's costing €400k to construct!

Would that be a normal enough price for the construction of such a cycle track?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,221 ✭✭✭✭Lumen

    What's the Jammy Track?

Was up at it the other day and I dont think in my opinion that it will be wide enough for racing. It will be good for training with a small group doing some hard efforts on closed road. Good to see something good happening for cycling and community around it. Just hope it doesn't get ruined by thugs!

How long do you think would you last on it doing some motor pacing behind a moped before you run off it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,460 ✭✭✭Slideshowbob

It won't be too wide, will be grand for the likes of this:

Para cyclists were training on it this morning

Looks like its open now for anyone to cycle around. Sort of turnstile thing at the entrance to let bicycles in but keep motorbikes, horses, cars etc out. Not sure if supervisors required etc for insurance etc though

Fair play to all involved. Will be a great racing and training facility near the city and m50. I presume there will be evening racing for all levels there next summer?!? Maybe morana can confirm?!?

    Nice fencing around it too!!

Thanks Bob. I certainly hope there is racing on it for all cats. Our good friends in the IVCA are interested in it as well. Official opening will be next spring. Once again I must mention the man who did all the spade work 11 years ago Mick Lawless. Take a bow!

Get out on it and enjoy it. post your fastest lap !!

So it's open for all, anytime once park is open?

I note there are a few route options?

Would there need to be a disclaimer notice and details on giving right of way to avoid collisions at the junctions?

Some signage has to be put up at the entrance but I think your point is a good one re way etc. I will speak to the boss about it.

Just noticed this post and well done to all involved, I took a spin around it yesterday eve with the young lad and its very nice, corners are super and a nice drag back to the gate. However as i was going around i did notice in some sections what looks like grass coming up through the tarmac! I didnt really inspect it (will next time) but i hope to god that its not a slapstick effort on behalf of the contractor.

Looks like grass seeds were spread on the soil so hopefully the grass on a Tarmac is just from a few seeds going astray

I would doubt it It was just signed off by a lad from England who specialises in these circuits. He said it was one of the best he has ever seen!

Grass seeds, Yeah makes sense I never thought of that, Because my first impression was that alot of work went into the construction especially on the bends. Lets just hope it gets some good use.

I was passing Corkagh Park today and rode the track with a handheld camera.

I went the wrong way round according to the official circuit map.

    This is speeded up (x3).
