And that 53g of fat is pretty much all trans fat which is just a nightmare for the arteries. Used to work in a chipper and they used massive blocks of hydrogenated vegetable oil, I think most chippers use the same but am open to correction on this.

How big is this portion? I'd love to know, cos they vary pretty wildly. I usually take it, if I've eaten fish & chips, it's about 2000 cals.

Im not so sure, a lot of chippers make a point of not using this now. however, the fact remains that is a ridiculous ammount of fat / calories and I dont think that protein figure is accurate either.. no way a portion of chips has more protein than a chicken breast

I got some the other day, strictly for research purposes :pac:

Bag of chips from Italian chipper 455g

Going off mc-cains site their premium chips are 253kcal and 7.2g fat sat per 100g

So 1,151kcal and 33g sat fat so 24.5points for the bag.
    http://points.ogo.ms/

There is an interview with the italian chipper association guys on youtube, one guy said they used lard, another said a typical fish & chips has about 800kcal! no way in hell!

That would be 1151kcal and 75g of fat overall, WW points are based on just sat fat for some reason I have yet to hear a reason for.
no way a portion of chips has more protein than a chicken breast
I get 10.5g of protein for my bag, working off this
    http://www.mccain.co.uk/our-food/chips/simply-gorgeous-chunky-chips-again/nutrition.aspx

If you just get chips on their own chippers usually give you a little more than say with a fish n chips.

I think they were including the fish as well as the chips in that figure.

Ah, yes I see the poster says fish and chips now. I presumed it was just chips as the figure was so low. If I only got 946kcal in a fish & chips I would not be very pleased. Even if it was half price like today in some italian chippers.

Do they? I know american fast food companies have bowed to pressure to remove it but I think most 'traditional' chippers still use it. A friend who works in a local restaurant (not posh but not cheap either) said they use partially hydrogenated oil to cook everything, they even use it in salad dressing

At 946kcal I'd say they got half a fish and about 10 chips ;)
