Is Android catching up fast??

Not lookin to cause a riot here, its a genuine question. I haven't been keeping up with the Android OS at all. Just saw a new version was announced. Is Android upto the mark yet in terms of functionality and apps?? With the launch of the new iphone around the corner, is Android a real alternative??
