Just looking to get a little info regarding semi auto shot guns. Toying with the idea of changing my O/U to an auto. I shoot very little in the way of clays and am mostly a pigeon/pheasant kinda guy!! Have any you changed over from an O/U and how did you find the transition.
    Cheers
    And any kinda review into
    Harrington & Richardson auto's?

    Beretta, Remington or Browning.
I did the same as you and have never looked back.
Semi is easier on the shoulder and of course has a third shot, some will say You will not hit with the first but i load light medium and heavy to accommodate range of duck flights etc and find it very successful on the shannon.

I have owned two Remington's 11-87 and currently a 105CTi and I like them, Browning are a nice gun but only one in right-hand so that rules me out!

pros and cons with it lad,it has the same sight picture as your o/u ,it'll be softer on the shoulder ok , the main disadvantage i see is that once you have it loaded there is no option to change cartidges quickly and you have to fire in the order they are in the gun , with a double barrell you can put different loads in the barrells in a second or two as well have a choice of choke depending which barrell you select .
can't help you with the advice on that particular model but i used to have an 1100 skeet remington with 26" barrell , for decoyed pigeon it was great , but for general shooting i'd still rather have 8 or 0-0 anyday ;)

I did the same years ago went from an o/u to a semi and like others havent looked back. I have however got a o/u for clays. Becareful of the 3rd shot and discipline is the key. I tend to still use the semi as an o/u, i.e tend to fire only two. Mosy times hoever I only need 1:D

A few years ago i switched from an O/U to a semi auto Beretta AL391.

    __swsports_19948.jpg

Took a day to get used to, but loved it. Switched back a short while ago as i took up the clays full time, but i intend to remedy that situation as soon as possible.

If given a choice i think i would prefer a semi auto all day long. If clays aren't an issue stick with the semi (or go for one).

Not having the option to switch barrels is what would get me. I often shoot with 2 different loads as I love a pop at a fox if I get a chance, especially when I'm out pheasant shooting and beating cover where I know they're in it. I know you can switch if you want but it's slow and then you have to go searching for the cartridge you just fecked out, pump action has the same problem.

Never undereastimate the value of pouring a little salt, pepper, sage and maybe some garlic down the barrel.

Might as well season as you shoot.:D

Sorted bought a Baikel-mp153 nice tight gun and in super nick and traded my yildiz and got a great deal.
Had a good read of JohnGalway's previous post for them and they seem like a good gun.
Now will i be able to do a straight substitution?

    Thanks for the help lads...

Hopefully. Even though the mechanics of an O/U are different to a semi they are both 12g so i would advise you chat with your FO and have 99% of the FCA1 filled in then tick the appropriate "license" box in his/her presence as per their instruction. (In other words ask them can it go through as a substitution).

PS - Congrats on the new gun. Well wear.

, the main disadvantage i see is that once you have it loaded there is no option to change cartidges quickly and you have to fire in the order they are in the gun
    ,

You have to hit the shell holder on the mag[abit fiddly on the 1100] but you simply let the shells eject possibly to the next round you want,or then re stuff with the appropriate load. Its simply knowing how the gun works and developing a technique around it.:)
wonder how many O/U people would dare do to their guns what that Canuck was doing to his Baikal??That can a standard on the slob land or duck swamp.

lads i'm trying to wrap my head around the restricted firearms malarky!
Am i right in saying ill have to get a dealer to approve that the gun is restricted to 3 rounds one in the chamber and 2 in the breech? Is there any point in going for a restricted firearm licence and to get the plug removed??

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,696 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

You can apply for a semi auto as either a restricted firearm (more than 3 cartridges) or an unrestricted firearm (3 cartridges or less).

The reason for the particular license sought must be a valid one. In other words you must show "good reason" why you require/need/want a shotgun that holds more than 3 cartridges (restricted) and why a shotgun that can only hold 3 or less cartridges (unrestricted) would not suffice/do.

If you go the unrestricted route you may have to provide paperwork to show the shotgun has been modified/altered/changed (or comes factory set) and that it cannot hold anymore than 3 cartridges. This can be gotten from the dealer or a gunsmith if that is the way you have had it plugged.

IF you want an easier life,go and get it restricted to three rounds.
IF you are going game and clay shooting that is.
IF you are hunting woodies and crows, you might have the excuse of using a restricted shotgun. I'll live with it IMC but I dont like it.
Putting a piece of dowel in the chamber is all of 5mins work for a gun dealer and the same time for a letterhead cert.Fighting the CS is a major PITA.
Removing it for a match or for hunting outside the ROI [in countries that allow such of course for hunting]. is five mins work Putting it back in the same time before you set foot here in Ireland again .

    Thanks ezridax
Might just be as well to leave it with 3. Ive managed on two for the last couple of yrs.

Has anyone managed to do a substitution from an O/U to a semi auto without any problems. Will i be grilled as to why i need/want the change of firearm?

Yes, but unfortunately not under the new system. Not that i was refused or couldn't, but more that i have not been in a position to need to change. I cannot see any problem with it though. As long as its an unrestricted (3 cartridge) gun then its really a unrestricted 12g shotgun for another unrestricted 12g shotgun.

They will ask for your reason for changing. The majority of people usually want a semi auto for game, that extra shot is handy. This reason, being why you want it, should/will suffice.

If you get it restricted (more than 3 shots) you can't shoot game with it. Regardless of whether or not they give you a licence for it, it's illegal to shoot game with a shotgun that can hold more than 3 shots. This has been my understanding of it anyway.

Wild birds only AFAIK. As with a rifle.

Its covered in the Wildlife Act 1976, Section 33.

Aren't they the only thing that fall under the term 'game', or would hares also be classed as game?

Hares are considered game under the wildlife act. Can only be shot in season with a shotgun.
Rifles (.22 and variants shoot Vermin)
Rifles .22/250 and above are permitted to shoot deer only if a permit from NPWS is given.
A large calibre rifle licence is the same as a .22lr. A separate licence is required to shoot game (ie deer, but may also include a different permit to shoot Seals)

So an Unlimited licence lets you shoot ducks,Snipe, peasant, Hare etc when in season, and vermin out of season

I'm liking the look of the Browning Maxus. Any idea of price for one of these???

    go for it Rambo
would ya not go for something a litttle more traditional..

But I guess you need more than 2 shots to bring a bird down

Oh Dwighet you know me so well.
If I got one I'd have to go the restricted route cos' I'd need all those shells to hit anything. The pump action wasn't fast enough for me.

Look here for a good reason for getting one

Indeed, the issue was more one of semantics I think. I mentioned that you could not use a restricted shotgun on game (implying pheasants, ducks, snipe, woodcock etc. which I would normally class as game) then ezridax said that only applied to wild birds and I was curious as to what the difference between wild birds and game was, I guess the answer is hares (at least with regard to hunting with a shotgun in Ireland).

It basically stops you using Slugs in a shotgun for killing deer, even before the SI was introduced in 2008/9.
Only mammal to be shot with a shotgun that is classed as game is Hare
Where I come from game is anything that can be eaten that is wild.:D

My Granny used to make Hare stew. We would not eat it as kids as it had a GAMEY flavour;)

I'd prefer the gamey flavour now though ;)

No, I always reckon sprouts were like donkey sh1tes.
I only ever carry 3 shells in my Remington.
    6,5,4 in that order.
