If it wasn't so serious, I'd almost think it was hilarious that one of them at one point asks a policeman whether it isn't illegal for said policeman to draw his gun because if so he'll report him...

That wasn't the best bit - he then starts telling the guy to draw his gun.

Ah yes, true! I just thought that had to be a bit of a translation error though (like he actually told him something like 'so what if you'd draw your gun?') because I couldn't quite believe anyone would say such a thing...

'Yes, do something illegal so I can report you. Eh, yeah, NOW, please, thanks. What, sorry? Whatever do you mean, I'm a 'hippo crit'?'

ScienceNerd - love it! I had the idea of Mohammed doing a delft-portrait, but I can't draw...

Wow, Pakistani government has blocked facebook and youtube.

And now, I just went on facebook and the "Everybody Draw Muhammed Day" page has been removed by facebook when it had over 110,000 fans.

but what I dont understand it why do somethig when you know it may provoke violence? You my call it freedom of speech and expression, but do you accomplish anythig good? No.. You don't. Just a couple of angry idiots making a mockery of the faith. It's pointless debauchery, especially at a time when the whole world looks at Muslims with alot of hostility iand then some guy comes slog and says ' ah sure, I'll draw a couple of pictures, they'll all go crazy and Muslims will look even worse then they already do. Wahey! ' :/

I completely agree with you that our communities have this problem. But if the problem is their why provoke it? S'all I'm saying. For me, it's not a big issue but for alot it is...

Its funny this... The Quran desrcibes Him as ' pale and rosy cheeked' yet all these drawings are like black guys. Lol. :)

Shhh... Don't get me started on problems with the Christian communityiesin Ireland...

You're dead wrong. What has happened over the last 5 years is that just about every media outlet have sent a strong message to the fundamentalist Islamic world. That message is, "violence and threats are effective ways to get what you want". The 10 thousand people who published pictures of Muhammad yesterday sent a new message. "Violence is inneffective. It not only doesn't give you what you want, it makes things considerably worse for you". We've gone from there being 12 cartoons to many thousands of cartoons. The Islamic response failed miserably.
Second to this, we achieve a situation where there are now so many people have drawn and published pictures, that you no longer have a few individuals who can be targeted by those who are threatening violence. The hope is that media outlets will be less likely to self censor too, this will result in even more potential targets. What are you going to do, kill everyone?
Finally, these cartoons can not be censored. They're in the public domain and they're going to stay there. The Islamic world is going to have to get used to it. You can't maintain your outrage for ever. Whether you like it or not you are going to become desensitised to the depictions. This will reduce the outrage and reduce the violence.
A hell of a lot has been achieved here, but Draw Muhammad day was just the beginning. Expect a lot more.

    Rather ironic piece on AFP
An Al-Qaeda front organisation has offered 100,000 dollars to anyone who kills Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has angered many Muslims by drawing highly blasphemous caricature of the Prophet.

Pakistan condemned the caricatures on Facebook and said that "such malicious and insulting attacks hurt the feelings of Muslims around the world".

Oh, the poor Muslims with their hurt feelings.

The most ironic thing about all this is that the reason Muslims are not supposed to draw Mohammad is because it can promote idoltry, where the image itself becomes worshipped.

As if that was what was happening on Facebook :P

Whereas now, the rule that you're not supposed to represent Mohammad is, er, worshipped.

I think I'm getting the hang of this religion thing at last.

Oh look, the person who inspired the campaign is now running scared:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/10136576.stm

    In summary:
"I know I'm the one who first came up with teh idea for Fraw Mohammed Day on May 20th, but making a Facebook page? Now they've gone too far!!!!"

I suppose in fairness toher she probably doesn't want to get petrol bombed.....

    Thats classic.

I love the way some Muslims have reacted this this (love as in think it is great), they have reacted in humor or polite offense or indifference.

Ultimately I think Draw Mohammad day has been a great success. People might say it was hi-jacked by anti-Islamlists but that doesn't really matter, it doesn't actually matter if the offense was small or huge.

It has forced Muslims to deal with how they will react to things they don't agree with or find offensive, which is what wasn't happening before. When a movement is so big that every Muslim is faced with something they find offensive then every Muslim is placed in a position of thinking about how Muslims should respond.

And a lot seem to realize that they should respond peacefully.

That to me was the whole point of Draw Mohammad day, and why I think so far it has been a great success. Much better than any other responses that did nothing

    LOL :pac:

One of the most bizarre things about all this is how reporters keep stressing "No violence Tom, there has been no violence here" every time they are reporting from a protest.

Apart from the expected Al Queda threat the protests seems largely non-violent and people seem really surprised by this.

AFAIK they donated the proceeds to charity. I think they (RATM) were not aware of it until it had gained a considerable following. Is that going beyond gorilla marketing and out the other side into some form of Al Quieda marketing where the marketing only exists because it has been given a name then ironically becomes a marketing system and kind of rallying call and... I need dinner I'm rambling. :)
