How reliable is your car? (Everything before 2005)

    Discrimination says I. This is for every car/van/jeep manufactured before 2005, and how reliable it is for you. Might be useful for second hand buyers on what are the reliable cars. So how reliable is your older car??

    Lets get the ball rolling :

    1993 Land Rover Defender 2.5tdi.

    Problems: Steering Knuckle joint loose. Rear hardy spicer joint. All cheap fixes. Thats all thats gone wrong in the last 3 years.

    Ever fail to start: The extreme winter killed the battery. Wouldnt turn over the big diesel.

    Rattles: heheheheeehehe...... No mechanical rattles but its a noisy aul thing.



    1985 Golf 1.3. 120k miles

    Problems: Frost broke the right hand window winder and the rear right door release. Snapped hand brake cable. No major mechanical or electrical problems.

    Ever fail to start: With a good battery, no. Very quick to turn over and start.

    Rattles: 2. the banjaxed window winder rattles a bit on rough roads.

    2000 Clio bought new as my fist car. Never missed a beat despite being horribly misstreated in it's early years and survived long enough to be usedas a scrappage car last month.

    94 accord 2.0 died
    94 rover 620 ( accord) 2.0 died

    93 Renault safrane 2.0 never missed a beat , sold because it wasunderpowered for the size of it and my next car came available.

    97 Renault safrane 2.5 auto again never missed a beat sold because I needed a van for work.

    Never should have sold either of the safranes

    97 Peugeot partner. Perfectly reliable .

    2000 xantia 1.8 low mileage and perfectly reliable ( must sell that seeing as I can't afford to run a car and van)

    currently driving a peugeot expert that's never missed a beat.

    The missus has had a 99 micra from new an 01 a140 from new thathad a couple of issues that were escalated to very dangerous by dodgy repairs done in a now closedtallaght merc dealer . After that it was a 00 scenic and now an 05 grand scenic that have needed nothing up untill I had to change the coils in last week ( it still started and ran, just lumpy). €120 outside of regular maintenance over 5 years is grand IMO.

    That's everything I've had and/or used on a daily basis

    99 toyota yaris the clutch is starting to go.
    05 toyota verso still like day 1.

    the pulley belt went got it replaced and 2 days later it snapped got it replaced again next day car conks out going round a corner and the pulley belt snapped again and went into the timing belt and had damaged the pistons..... nice car but wouldn't get one again after that.

    Problems: headlights condensating, side repeaters condensating, syncromesh went after small mileage, all done under warranty.

    99 Mazda 323 1.5 GLX
    Problems: None, over 3 years
    Ever fail to start: No
    Rattles: none

    01 Mazda 323 1.6 GLX
    Problems: Coil pack, needed gearbox seal after driving through flood, broke alternator belt
    Ever fail to start: Yes, needed new battery
    Rattles: none

    93 Corolla 1.6 SE
    Problems: None, over 6 years
    Ever fail to start: Yes, needed battery
    Rattles: one from around the radio, sorted

    99 Fiat Brava HSX 16v (ex hire)
    Problems: Rear wiper, front wiper linkage, front washer jets, central locking broke on passenger door, contacts on boot door rusted for rear wiper, rear washer pipe detached, syncromesh on 2nd gear, head gasket X2, needed new cam followers, oil consumption, exhaust centre section very prone to getting torn on speedbumps, starter motor. sunroof motor needed replacement
    Ever fail to start: yes, battery, alarm and sterter problems


    00 Alfa 146 1.4 Sportivo (ex hire)
    Problems: Remote locking never worked, CD player overheating, windows closing outside of frames

    01 Peugot 306 - no problems

    99 Citroen Xzara - fan/heater inside stopped working just before I traded it in.

    01 Alfa 147 - Bulbs went regularly. Never failed to start

    04 Audi A4TDI - no problems.

    I've been uber lucky!

    Lots of money spent on preventive maintenance plus

    AC condensor (warranty)
    Rust on front wings (warranty)
    Rear electric window switches (warranty)
    Rusted brake lines (warranty)
    Wiper linkages (warranty)
    Viscous fan coupling
    Central locking erratic
    Battery
    Window motor

    Failed to start - twice - battery and imobiliser problem
    Issue with flooded engine if car moved short distance, had to run it to warm to avoid.

    Rattles - 2

    Best car I've ever owned.

    They blew up in clouds of steam and smoke. Cant actually remeber exactly it's few years ago now. The Accord blew the rad and the cooling system went with it elsewhere. The Rover engine died altogether.

    The Clio saw nothing but petrol for it's first 3 years and 40,000 odd miles. It also suffered body damage in it's first couple of months as a result of allowing the missus to drive it (think it was about 6 weeks old when it was run up a gate).

    1997 VW Polo 1.9SDI saloon
    Bomb proof car ~ only non standard service item were
    1. headlight after stone made a hole (bad stone)
    2. window winder on drivers door

    had to spray WD40 in door lock to keep it free in winter
    Never touched brake pads or clutch, always started first turn

    nothing else on the car from 60,000 to 170,000 miles

    2001 VW Bora 1.9 (130Bhp)

    Very realible
    Had to replace turbo after it blew but limped home
    Gets through a set of front bushes every 40,000 miles or so
    Door lock on passangers door jammed and had to be sorted out
    no rattles apart from when front bushes are going or wheels r worn

    96 Fiesta 1.3 - no problems. Still have it

    00 Rover 75 1.8 Only bought recently. A few niggly electrics (E/W switch on driver side) but sound mechanically so far it seems.

    Yeah I love it tbh. But he problem is it'd be destroyed in weeks if I sas using it to carry tools and got in to it dirty after work (Plumber).

    I'd rather give it up than wreck it.


    I bought it in early 2008 with 60,000 miles on it with fsh. I replaced the suspention spheres and put a new set of discs and pads on it last year. It's still only got 65k on it.

    Bmw 318ci 2001 currently 126k miles

    Front wishbones (wear and tear goes in all 3ers) approx 400 euro incl fitting.

    Thermostat (stuck open so could drive the car just with no heat) 70 euro and fitted it myself

    Camshaft sensor, about 100 euro

    Lock on passenger door sometimes gets stuck closed but not annoying enough to warrant fixing.

    A/C needs re-gassing.

    Passed the NCT in November first time with no preparation except 2 new tyres and cleaning the MAF myself.

    Ever fail to start: once with a dead batt started first time with jump leads.
    once when the starter got wet, started easily on the clutch with just two of us pushing (and its a heavy car). Started its self again the next morning no work required.

    So I can say around 700 euro (of non-standard maintenance) just to allow for anything I might have forgotten, not bad in almost 3 years of owning it.

    1989 Mini City (6 months): All I can say is :(

    2001 Peugeot 206 (2 years): Brake light stayed on, but was a quick fix.

    1999 Golf 1.4 (1 year): Constant sticky throttle cable (I think), plus many assorted annoyances.

    2000 Alfa Romeo 156 1.6 (2 years): Headlights were prone to blowing on occasion. Apart from that, it was just regular servicing. Honestly.

    2000 BMW e46 320d (2 years) Needed new clutch & DMF, coolant system needed a good few replacement parts. Various other things needed replacing, but it was at the 100K miles mark where these things tend to happen. I'm sure there was more as well; on reflection it was an expensive car to keep on the road, and I've little doubt a 320i would have been cheaper in the long run.

    2000 BMW 525 (2 years and counting): Cooling system needed a few parts replacing. New stereo head unit. New air blower / "hedgehog". Rocker cover a tiny bit leaky, so replaced recently. Other than that, it's been rock solid and still feels really tight.

    All from memory so it's a struggle

    1990 Rover 414si bought in June 1999 as first car, put 20,000 miles on her over the following 20 months. Needed back box, alternator, battery and CV joint in that time and a clutch, thats18 year olds in their first car for you.

    1995 Rover 214SEi bought in March 2001, kept her for 5 years and put 100K miles on her. Fuel pump and gearbox went on her so stranded both those times, blocked fuel filter also had me stranded once. One or both CV joints and a wishbone needed doing, along with the catalytic converter.

    2005 Mondeo 2.0Tddi, company car for a year, flywheel and intercooler hose both needed fixing under warranty, not stranded by either but intercooler issue resulted in driving 40miles at less than 30 miles / hour.

    1999 Rover 600, bought in Sep 2006 and sold in April 2007. Never an issue really, think I needed a CV boot done on her for the NCT.

    1995 Toyota Celica bought in April 2007 and sold the following Christmas, nothing at all (except tyres and oil change but that doesn't count presumably, most of the other cars had pads and whatnot along with oil changes and plugs etc done too obviously)

    1997 Rover 400 diesel bought in late 2007 and driven until March 2009, had to replace the battery, one CV joint, other CV boot and a wishbone on her, nothing else. Actually had to have the starter looked at, new brushes or something in that.

    1993 Prelude 2.2 auto non VTEC, bought in March 2009 and sold 3 or 4 month later. Nothing here either, CV boot actually now that I think of it, don't do them myself, potentially messy and pain in arse :)

    1992 Merc E250 diesel bought in Summer 2009 and driven for 3 months until September 2009, nothing really, needed a relay for the ABS. Only a tidy up and a service otherwise, was 230 000 miles on her.

    1997 Rover 216 Coupe, bought in late Summer 2009 and driven for 6 months until April 2010, had to put a battery into her, nothing else. She's currently at home off the road, needs a wiper motor for the NCT as it doesn't work on intermittent setting.

    1993 BMW 520i touring, bought in March 2010 and currently my daily driver, have spent nothing on it except a tonneau cover off ebay which doesn't count really. Was serviced before I got her and she is in great condition, still need to have a look at drivers door though, won't open from the inside, she'll be for sale shortly as I only need an estate for the next couple of months.

    All the above had routine servicing done, oil, filters etc when needed along with tires and that sort of stuff :)

    First car - 1986 Fiesta Mk II 996cc (36k miles in 18 months)
    Surprising reliable car for the rust bucket that it was, apart from a few electrical switch blowing, no real problems.

    Second Car - 1996 Polo 1ltr
    Very reliable, put 96k miles on in 3 years, never as issue..

    Third Car - 1997 Modeo 1.6LX Saloon (had for 8 years and 182k miles)
    Back bushes and wishbones replaced twice in 8 years,
    Front brake disks
    1 light switch
    Blocked valve in engine (a common thing apparently with this model)
    Cause emissions to rise and failed NCT emmissions test by .5% as a result :rolleyes:

    Current Car - 2001 Audi A6 1.8T (had for 3 years and 30k miles now)
    Issue with remote central locking, still going (Nothing serious)
    MAF had to be replaced
    Still only 75k miles on it, so still a relative young one.. :D

    Thats it really, I am lucky enough not to have had too many problems yet with many of my cars..

    1993 BMW 850CSi
    About 5k spent in parts (not all failed, some preventative) since owning, 7mths. Its also my daily driver.

    Some big ones:
    Clutch burnt out on day2.
    MAF sensor (1 of 2)
    Rear Shocks
    Rear and Front suspension arms/bushings (ie everything but the front shocks and all springs)
    Rear exhaust backboxes


    Im sure it will be perfectly reliable when its all fixed though. :D

    From memory 1993 Nissan Micra which I bought in 2001 was perfect never had a problem with it
    Changed car to a 2000 Nissan Micra in 2004 kept til 2006 perfect never had a problem with it
    Currently driving 2004 Fiesta Zetec Steel no problems as such did have a dead battery twice in the 4 years i've had it both occassions due to me leaving internal light on AND sat nav charging overnight in in-car charger

    1999 Rover 200
    Leaky rocker cover gasket, caused it to burn oil for the first few months I had it.
    New exhaust.
    One rear wheel bearing.

    Other than the above it has not missed a beat in the 3 years I have had it.

    Most of my cars have been non-stories.

    1991 Integra XSI (dohc vtec)
    Blew a bearing in the distributor at 234,000km. €180 for a new dizzy from Canada.
    Trailing arm bushes went at some stage, failing the NCT. €38.
    ABS never worked, thanks to faulty Sumitomo pump.

    2004 Civic IMA
    Thanks to someone leaving a rubber seal off, water got in where it shouldn't have and blew an injector. €102 for a new one. Injector in turn damaged the ECU, £120 for a replacement off ebay (€1100 from a main dealer:eek:)

    sold it, traded it in for a 95 i think colt. japanese one

    bomb proof

    sold that for a 98 civic coupe sr vtec

    bomb proof and fairly nippy :eek:

    sold that for 2 bmws

    first was a 95 316i...

    trouble, everything that could go wrong, did

    sold that for a 93 bmw 316i. less trouble.

    (notice the downgrading...!)

    current car is a mondeo 01 zetec. bomb proof.

    apart from rear suspension.

    99 Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback(Colt Import) - perfect till a woman pulled out in front of it on a national route one morning :(

    98 Mitsubishi Mirage Coupe (Import) - again perfect till traded in because I needed a diesel for my increased mileage

    02 VW Passat TDI - bought from what I too late discovered was a cowboy :(
    - Problems with door locks
    - Oil consumption started going mad
    - Dash lit up like a christmas tree towards the end
    - Later found out that despite being sold as a 130 BHP version, Cartell lists it as a 100 BHP model :(
    Ironically despite all that, it still drove very well and was very comfortable
    Eventually traded in as it was approaching NCT time and wasn't worth the money to fix it.

    06 VW Passat TDI DSG
    - Problems with the boot lid. Needed to be regassed
    - Very sore on dipped bulbs (but I do have them on all the time I guess)
    - Power has started to "surge" intermittently when the engine is cold resulting in jerky movements.
    - Intermittent rattling/scraping sound from what I'm told is the dual-mass flywheel which is going to cost me a grand to get sorted :(

    The Best:

    1996 Laguna Mirage 1.8. Bought it to sell on and make a profit but the missus grabed it and kept it for 2 and a half years in which time nothing went wrong, and I meen nothing. I didn't spend a penny on that car bar a service....oh and I sold it for 200 quid profit after all that :D

    The Worst:

    1990 Citroen AX van. In my ownership for 6 months. In that time it stopped on the road twice, refused to start 14 times , various bits fell off it and in the end I crashed it. Enough said :o

    Opel Astra 99 1.4: Had it for four years it served me well. Water pump went on 2nd year, replaced that along with the belts.
    Then head gasket went with only 65,000 miles on the clock at that point traded it in for my new car.

    Honda accourd 1996 2.0i 96,000 miles and probably clocked:D

    Only problem i had was an attempted theft and the previous owner killed the clutch(reflected in price).

    Citroen Berlingo ...... '03 1.9 non turbo

    This bitch has been nothing but trouble in the 6 months I have it!!
    • New clutch
    • New wishbone
    • New thermostat
    • Broken back door handle, have to climb through van and open from inside
    • Non-turbo means its as slow as a wet week
    • Eats through break and indicator lights for some reason (think I've put 6 new bulbs in it)
    • Drivers door is slightly offline which means it doesn't always close properly without an incredible bang!!
    It has never failed to start though, even with the harsh winter!!:D

    TBH that sounds like the previous owner knew there was maintenance coming up and offloaded it.

    Clutch is a wear and tear item. Thermostat can go and only cost about €10 anyway. Wishbone could be damaged from hittign a big pothole/kerb.

    Handle would be an easy fix from a scrap yard.

    The door could be as a result of one of my pet hates, people standing leaning on the open door.

    The engine is slow alright, Ihave the same one in my expert, the upside is, it'll never break. Toyota used them in the corolla (van i think) for a bit in the 90's,

    my current 2004 honda civic 1.4s is no trouble at all. Starts east every time and drives smoothly and great for mileage. Have it about 9 months now. It has a small ding on the body which i need to get fixed (its tiny to be honest)

    Previously had a 2001 punto. head gasket, gearbox, power steering all had to get fixed while i had it as well as front shocks and a few other things. Absolute nightmare.

    Also previously had a 1995 Toyota Cynos. Probably my favourite car i had as was fun to drive. Always started good and never a mechanical issue. Clutch went but it was due to. Also got timing belt done but again it was due it so not bad at all. Would think about getting a 98-99 model and i always consider it if i see it on adverts or somewhere. Was great until someone rear ended it and wrote it off.

    2000 citroen saxo,
    the clutch was the only major thing that went wrong,€668 to repair in a main dealer,i think that was me learning in it that wrecked it though,it failed the nct on a rear brake imbalance no idea what caused it, and the handbrake went,i thought it was the cable but i think i pulled it up too hard and it somehow went above the ratchet part:confused:
    a few niggly things are starting,,no water to the rear window washer,passenger door doesnt understand the concept of central locking,

    and most worrying the clutch is making noise which i think is the clutch release bearing,that could be dodgy,
    makes the car look terrible when listed like that,but its always started even at 6am when it was -6 out:)

    thats over 3 years,

    2001 VW Polo 1.4 16V 75bhp - My first car

    I seemed to get landed with most wear and tear items that needed changing at around 55k: Timing belt, break discs, new clutch (partly due to previous owners no doubt and me learning.)

    Only item outside of general wear and tear was a faulty fuel injector. Reverse gear crucnhes unless i put it into first firstly. To be honest the gearbox is rough but i think thats a VW thing.

    Its nippy round town, suffices for the odd cross country, its comfortable and since i got those items repaired its been steady as she goes (touch wood). No ABS though and i dont trust it in the wet to handle well either.

    Otherwise to be honest I like it! haha

    2001 Fiat Punto

    Had it for 2 years, changed the oil twice, replaced the rear right shock as i smashed into a pothole driving 'enthusiastically' on a country road.

    2002 Alfa Romeo

    Some contaminant (most likely water) got in the sump last year, needed to replace the spark plugs, ht leads, a few other bits. Day i was driving her to get the work done along with oil & filter change plus brake pads (650 notes) she wouldnt start for the first and only time ever, had to get new battery too.

    She takes 1litre of oil every 1000 miles, other than that shes a dream

    95 Corolla. Bought in 2001 and put nearly 30,000 miles on it in 7 months. Never had a problem with it ( except for about 50 foot of concrete fencing!).

    94 Corolla. Bought in 2002 and sold it four months later. Fitted 2 trailing arms in it.

    99 Mondeo. Bought in 2002 and kept it for 20 months and about 60,000 miles. One front door lock, one plug lead and a cat is all I put into it besides the usual brakes and stuff.

    01 Corolla. Bought in 2004. Kept it for a year and 20,000 miles. Never put anything into it.

    01 Avensis. Bought in 2005. Had this for nearly 5 years and 70,000 miles. One rear wheel bearing and rear anti roll bar bushins. One rear suspension top. Brake fluid reservoir cap. 2 door contact switches and an ignition switch. Toyota fitted a reconditioned block under warranty at 83k in 2008.

    07 Accord. Bought in march. Too early to tell.

    All cars have been petrol and apart from leaving an interior light on once have never failed to start or stopped on the road.
    Pretty uneventful really.

    00 BMW (e39) a beaut of a car to drive, hasnt cost me anything yet ,nor the previous owner . Feels really tight and looks really well .............touch wood as heard parts are quite expensive .

    03 Berlingo 1.9,
    back door handle went,only opened from inside, was a cheap fix.

    Currently with mechanic as the truss bearing went in the gearbox and ****ed up the clutch. mechanic found one of the gearbox seals gone aswell. not sure on the specifics but hes going to put a new one in before he reassembles the thing.

    2002 Peugeot 307

    pressure bearing in clutch went, (€350ish)
    handbrake seized up from the snow in jan (250ish)
    fault with glow plug relay (€90)
    problem with indicator bulb holder (DIY job for free)
    and reecntly i keep getting random warnings (anti pollution fault & battery charge fault) that just come and go for no apparent reason.

    1998 Rover 400 1.4

    Had it for a year and didn't have 1 single problem with it.

    2002 MG ZR 1.4

    Leaky sunroof and driver's window got stuck open once. The glass had come off the track. It was an easy fix once the door card was off.

    1999 E46 BMW 318i

    Driver's side front brake calliper seized. Coolant light came on constantly since I bought it (privately). Spent €€€s to fix it only to find that it was caused by a huge hole in the rad. Fixed that then traded it in.

    2004 Mazda RX-8

    Since the evening I test drove it it was very hard to start. Turned out it needed the upgraded starter which it got. The big freeze murdered the battery but I replaced it. No problems since then. I only did regular servicing myself and got new tyres whenever needed. It passed the NCT twice without going near a garage since I bought it. A lot of people like to run these down but with proper maintenance and if you know what you're doing, it's as reliable as anything else out there.

    I Currently have:

    00 Honda Civic - Runs like a dream. Only problem was the exhaust that needed to be replaced. Other than perfect - 125k and would do the same again with ease I'd say.

    Wife currently has:

    00 Skoda Fabia - A total heartbreaker. New wishbones, new electric window motor, timing belt, leads, coil pack. Burns oil like a mother f**ker. There are currently engine fault lights on, ABS Lights on etc etc.... might be down to the wife wrecking the car don't know really.

    Why are people putting in brake pads, tyres, clutches etc?

    These are wear items, they do not relate to a cars reliability whatsoever.
    (Unless the clutch goes at 40K or something)

    So far worn anti roll bar link, €20 for a pair
    Glow plugs need changing
    Failed starts 0.

    Obviously not everyone is going to have the history on 1995 car but, in general, how reliable is your old-ish car? :P

    I'll start:

    2000 Opel Astra 1.4 16v

    Owned since Jan 2009.

    So far:

    Nothing (touch wood)! bar general servicing and a water pump. Full history shows no warrenty work ever done.

    Stranded: 1 (due to a very old dead battery last winter)

    55,000 miles.

    So I would say its very reliable. Its like new.

    01 A3 1.6. Have it about a year now.

    No problems except for flucuating idle which a bit of redex sorted out last year.

    131k miles and drives like new. Changed the oil and filter myself about a month ago.

    A few stone chips on the bonnet but other than that, looks like new as is waxed regularly.

    Probably will keep it a bit longer an maybe move on to a 1.9 A4 or Saab 93 or a TT if my insurance will cover me :)

    all three never let me down Fiesta owned nearly 4 years, escorts 18 months and 12 months. All start first time. All stated to be in first class order by my mechanic. 00 escort passed NCT recently with flying colours, fiesta due next week, should be no problem.

    2000 nissan almera 1.4 - bulletproof. Had it for 1 year. Replaced nothing & always started. Sold it to brother who has had no problems ever.

    2001 Honda civic coupe 1.7 - bulletproof. Had it for about a year. Replaced nothing. Always started. Slight water leak in boot caused by defective light assembly. American built you see.:rolleyes:

    2000 subaru legacy B4 2.0 turbo - Engine was lumpy after a week of ownership, investigated & found cause to be very worn sparkplugs, all had to be replaced at a cost of 150 euro i think. Car was grumpy in the morning ie; had to warm up a bit then it would run smooth & very quick. Always started though.

    1997 honda civic 1.4 - bombproof little car. Replaced column cover as some knacker broke into it & tried to hot wire it. Always started. This car had been criminally neglected by previous owner yet still carried on regardless.

    2001 Lexus IS200 - absolutely rock-solid car. Just a well built car in every way. Replaced nothing. Always started.

    1999 Mitsubishi Pajero pinin 1.8 petrol. Bulletproof. Tiny little car (i was told i looked like donkey Kong when sat in it.:mad:) & a fairly rattly engine but she always started & i replaced nothing in the year that i owned her.

    1996 toyota hilux surf 3.0td. Big solid tank of a car. I got car with 100,000k & after 2 previous owners had used it as their tiling company work horse & she never missed a beat in the year that i owned her.
    Had to replace one of the batteries as it died & get minor repairs on rad due to a large stone wacking off it one day while i was driving. Always started.

    2000 toyota corolla 1.4 5door. Early days. Engine was a bit lumpy so i changed sparkplugs, swapped coil packs & added injector cleaner to fuel; sorted.:)
    Rear window wiper doesn't work & im pretty sure the hand brake cables need replacing but hey for 1600 euro?? could do a lot worse.

    Stopped buying newer cars, prefer the pre-loved example as I own them out right and can get my hands dirty on my days off :)

    90 1.6 Ford Orion LX
    Ex-Hackney. Leopard skin seat covers. Round the block a few times. €140 can't go wrong - NCT'd too. Sold it to a old guy who lives around the corner, he's only had Orions since 1980's (Cortinas & Anglias before that), it's now like a new car!

    96 Punto 1.1 SX

    Freebie. Drove until NCT expired and then broke it for spares for a crashed 99 I got for free too. Sold the 99 one for €800 and got €120 for the 96 shell engine and box :o

    97 Pug 306 1.9 XTDI

    Best car I've ever owned - a few blown fuses and bulbs but I regret selling it! Only got rid as couldn't afford the tax. Xantia gearbox, front and rear discs but otherwise original. I really miss it :(

    99 1.4 Megane RXI

    1 ould fella owner, 80k. Few niggles. Exhaust kept splitting at the clamp (2 min fix), air recirculation vavle broke so a loud pop would ring anytime I started it - fixed by disabling it and fixing the valve open. High spec and really spacious came and went with a FSH.

    01 Fiat Bravo Trofeo
    Great car, great MPG, great spec and a wee ripper too. Needs link arms and front tyres to be done - but passed NCT as is so not in Dire Straits. Only had to replace rear wiper and aerial after some scroat nicked 'em. Current car only 48k and is apparently a rare spec :)

    04 Focus 1.6 Zetec
    Lambda probe, coilpack, x2 window regulators. Awful car.

    A few others not worth mentioning.

    1998 Ford Fiesta 1.3 LX:
    First car, bought in 2006. 67k miles when I bought it, 88k now.
    - A few suspension things replaced (bushings etc.)
    - Thermostat, temperature gauge sender, heater control valve, fan blower resistor pack, indicator flasher relay, rear wiper retainer clip thing (all cheap enough parts)
    - Gearbox is a bit rough. When I bought it it was hard to get into 1st and 2nd when cold, got oil changed and it was much improved. Starting to grind going into 2nd sometimes now.
    - Some valve is fcuked, engine rough when idling (bordering on misfiring), terrible on fuel (29 MPG avg. lol). Can't be arsed/too mechanically inept to fix it. I kinda want it to die so I have an excuse to get different car but it seems to have other plans... (NCT soon may be the end of it)
    - Idle control valve was dirty, car would easily cut out when decelerating, just needed cleaning
    - Failed NCT on rear brakes, self-adjuster thing was seized (no new parts needed)
    - Drivers seat quite worn, lumbar support is now pretty bad (passenger seat is fine, wish I could just swap them around)

    Ever fail to start: No

    Rattles: When idling - everything :) Otherwise just the sunroof when open (cheap tilt-only yoke).

    Right, where do I start....

    00 Micra - 86k miles (we still have it)
    1. Power steering pump is on the way out. We'll change it when it dies totally
    2. Rear wheel bearing is a fraction noisy
    3 & 4 Both drivers and rear passanger window glass has become detached from the winder mechanism.
    5. Front shocks are shot, totally.......

    00 Primera - 107k miles (we still have it)
    1. Oxygen sensor has to be changed.
    No rattles at all......

    96 Carina - 180k miles (It's in "storage")
    Rear bushes are now worn. The only thing that went was the rear wheel cylinders for a previous owner while competing in a Night Navigation trial in the car

    88 Citroen AX GT - 120k miles (when it died)
    1. Clutch pedal had a nasty habit of sticking
    2. Starter solonoid worked when it wanted - Bump starting the car was the usual cure
    3. Coolant hose burst in Mahon Point. We managed to drive it home the 10 miles.......
    4. Brake pipe burst while being NCT'ed:eek:
    5. Crank Seal went, resulting in Oil leaking onto the Clutch, contaminating it
    6. Rear Axle swing arm bushings collapsing. The wheels were cambered as a result
    7. Valve stem oil seals going, resulting in a massive oil concumption
    8. Top door pins wearing, resulting in the top of the doors leaking water
    9. Window Regulators breaking/sticking regularly. A tap of a hammer usually fixed it.....
    10. Distributor packed up at 2 in the morning, when I was 40 miles from home......
    And I loved that car. It finally died when somebody else was driving it and a water hose cracked. It leaked water and the driver kept going, seizing the engine....

    '77 Escort - 59k miles (I still have it)
    1. Needed a full engine rebuild (block wear as the previous and first owner only drove it for short journeys and the engine never heated properly)
    2. Distributor cap cracked while motoring down the South Link leaving me stranded (I carry a spare now.....)
    3. Primary Choke on the carb wore, resulting in lumpy idle and made it impossible to drive - new carb was needed
    4. A few niggly things and a lot of peventative maintenance, but the car is 33 years old.
