Mod edit: Read here before you post.
Health Minister Mary Harney is to bring an Order to Government today banning a number of substances available in head shops with immediate effect.

It follows approval for the measure from the European Commission yesterday.

The substances will be banned under the Misuse of Drugs Act and the Order is expected to be signed later today.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0511/headshops.html

The substances that will be banned:
The list of the substances by common name is:

synthetic cannabinoids (contained in SPICE products)

    benzylpiperazine (BZP) and piperazine derivatives

mephedrone, methylone methedrone, butylone, flephedrone, and MDPV

    GBL and 1,4 BD

GBL and 1,4BD are legitimately used in a number of industries including in
chemicals and pharmaceuticals. It will now be an offence to import,
export, produce, supply or possess these substances where they are to be
used for the purpose of human ingestion (other than as a flavouring in
    food).

    Penalties:
“Their possession and supply are now illegal and subject to criminal
    sanction of:
up to 7 years imprisonment and/or a fine for unlawful possession,
    and,
on indictment, up to a maximum period of life imprisonment for
    unlawful supply.

“This means that the reckless, irresponsible people who have sold and
promoted them must safely dispose of every product containing even one of
the substances immediately. Otherwise they could face criminal
prosecution. They cannot sell, supply, possess or distribute this stock,
with effect from the start of today, 11th May.

The above is a press release.

I presume the producers can now just start making new products with substances that are still legal?

She should announce an immediate criminal ban on pie-shop products. I mean *look* at her! She's, ya know, fat and stuff.

have you ever been offered cocaine ? i certainly have not. With MDMA out of the question and ecstacy having a terrible hangover name for itself, its better this way.

alot of people i know do it. And the intake and usage sky rocketed as they would party through out the night and wait for head shops to open at 10 and go buy some more. Same cannot be said for illegal drugs, drug dealers dont hang around the 'corners' with shoes hangin from telephone wires.

    get out more.

Synthetic cannabinoids? Wtf?? Is that reporter speak or are they honestly signing off a law with that definition?

Eh, yes  What's your point?

Illegal drugs are practically as easy to buy as legal drugs. The government are losing out on vital tax money by criminalizing these "legal highs" and are also encouraging criminal activity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,241 ✭✭✭Sanjuro

Brilliant. The drug dealers will be rejoycing. Rather than try and approach the problem rationally, they just slap a ban on everything, forcing those who really want it to go seek drugs from criminals. Forward thinking by the government, yet again.

    demographically, that statement is questionable.
If you have contacts you can get illegal substances, other wise legal drugs are an easy outlet. As described in my previous post.

I agree completely. Headshops were targeting kids who would probably not seek out illegal drugs anyway, and probably still wont if these legal highs are banned.

I suppose Harney and co are trying to be seen doing something in their ever shortening period of power.
Now if the cnuts could only get around to actually doing something more important like addressing childrens rights with an already overdue referendum, addressing fathers rights by updating them from the dark ages and/or addressing the critical mess the fcukers have helped make of our medical services - they might be more fcukin' use - O' and while your at it ya useless schites, give those involved, their 3 by-elections, you spineless, shower of cowardly cnuts!

Objection your honour, generalisation. not all headshops are the badly run den of scum that you, the government and joe "terrible terrible terrible" duffy think they are.

'These substances are dangerous and their sale and promotion have caused huge anxiety to families and communities throughout the country,

you could say that about booze and fags, but they're still here.

    hypocrites one and all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 331 ✭✭MJRS

More money for criminals, wahey! How exactly did the head shops target kids? They haven't exactly changed their approach, or even adopted one at all, in recent memory. If anything, the media frenzy created a draw for kids, give a teenager a way to rebel and they'll do it. There wasn't exactly an air of rebellion surrounding legal drugs, or else salvia etc. would be on the list of bannings. This is just the government getting an easy 'win' against drugs, because they can't do anything about the illegal drugs. Embarassing that people are hailing this as some great victory really.

No, the drug dealer usually hangs out at the house party, he sleeps most of the day and is up all night because those are he's working hours. He'll travel to meet you, unlike the inconsiderate headshops.

What???? How are head shop owners scumbags? Because they sell mild-altering substances? In that case, are publicans and off licence owners scumbags too?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

You do know that it's the scumbag DRUG DEALERS that are going to gain from this?

    Oh dear.
There are more loopholes in this than in a large slice of gruyere cheese.
This is kneejerk legislation, ill-advised, rushed and unlikely to achieve its purpose.
These substances have been banned on the basis of harm caused, while the government's official research into them was prevented from considering the degree of harm they cause.
And Ahern's ridiculous attempt to legislate against substances that remain legal (on the basis that they could be psychoactive) is beyond ludicrous and impossible to implement.
Will he be banning nutmeg? What about alcohol? I predict this nonsense will be easily circumvented and the government will continue to look ridiculous on this issue.
How about licensing and decriminalising those substances which we have done harm studies on, and which proved not to be particularly harmful?
I'm thinking of actual cannabis (not dubious synthetics) and MDMA, both of which the Lancet medical journal found to be way less harmful than legal substances (like tobacco and alcohol) and prescriptive drugs (tranqs, methadone, etc).

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not....

The reality is that a substantial proportion of people are interested in trying drugs. A substantial proportion are not.

Those who have no interest in trying drugs are not going to visit a headshop.
