Would you buy a car with a G reg?

I don't make up the rules, but Irish people are funny about regs, and have different perceptions about regs from different counties. A car with a DL reg will have trouble selling in Wexford for example, and no-one outside Roscommon wants an RN reg (sheep shaggers etc).

So... what about a G reg. I don't live in Galway, or Connaught for that matter, and would be reluctant to buy a car with a G reg -- only cos I think it'll be hard to sell on when the time comes.

D is probably the safest, as it's the most common, and probably the closest thing to a generic reg.

    So what about you?

Of course I would - I'm from Galway!

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I've owned Ds, WHs and an OY, never heard a dealer say word one about it at trade in time.

    Would I buy a G reg?

It depends on the car, if I like it, good price, NCT etc.

The reg does not come into it. Reg snobbery is for snobs!

I dont get this fascination with reg plates, be it the year or the county - makes absolutely no difference to me - the final set of numbers must all be even though

I wouldn't drive a car with a Kerry or Roscommon reg.

I would do my best to have a G reg on my car as I'm from Galway. Thats one advantage of importing you can make sure you can have the reg you want. The most reg I wouldn't like is a D reg. Its frowned upon out in the country :D.

That said the reg would never stop me buying a car if it was the right car.

I remember a guy posting here once, looking for help spending his money on a car. One guy replied with what he thought was a decent car, for the money, good miles but it was a Cork reg.

The guy posted back saying he'd only be interested in D reg cars, nothing else.. funnily, he didn't get much help after that.

    What a fag

    That was MarkN, iirc.

I can see where he's coming from. He's a Dub living in Dublin, so he'd like a D reg, just like Zane Defeated Raisin above prefers a G reg.

I once bought a car from a guy called Greg, does that count?

Lots of Dubs think anyone from outside the pale are muck savages, I'm a about a mile or so from cork City Centre and when I worked in Dublin fcuktards from miles and miles away from Dublin City referred to me as being from the country. The same knob ends were as streetwise as a nun from the 70s.

Reg wouldn't bother me. When buying if there was two equally good cars with different reg's I'd take the reg of where I live simply because of the perceptions of some people when I try to sell it on.

I do avoid WX and CE reg's a bit though - lots seem to be rentals. If it wasn't I'd be happy enough but the initial impression either of those plates give would make me hesitant

Same here, i'd buy a car with any reg as long as it was priced accordingly.

He might have been better off buying the C reg if he went for the crashed one with a D reg instead.

So is it safe to say you'd be looking for a better deal on a G reg, on account of the reg?

Of course because a 2006 KY Ford Mondeo with a full service history, 4 good tyres and has been well cared for is a WORSE car than a Dublin/Galway/Limerick registered car of equal details.

If you're trying to sell it in Dublin/Galway/Limerick, then I suspect it is. You're better off in those counties with a D/G/LK reg (delete as applicable).

Tasty bird in a KY reg car always amuses me hehehe.. I'm easily entertained.

    Wouldn't buy a DL reg:
    a) because you get the impression that everyone in donegal drives their car like they stole it, even if they're only going tothe shop for milk,
b)many english imports I've seen that turned out to be Cat D or clocked etc were DL regs.

Anything else is fine by me, obviously a C reg is far superior, like...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,411 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I'm tend to pay more attention to the particular car that I am buying than the reg plate attached to it. The reg plate is just an identification number linked to the owner and for tax purposes. I've owned D, L, LK, CE, TS and TN reg cars over the years and has made fup all difference come selling time.

Depending on the car, probably. Some cars are more sensitive to registration than others, a KY Ferrari being an extreme example. For the likes of an E-Class, I wouldn't see a huge difference in value between a D and a G reg, though.

    Reg is unimportant to me.

How can you say it is worse. Each car must be appraised individually.

Some people do not even know what their number plate says so I suspect its only snobs who pay attention to reg plates.

Quite probably, but snobs are potential buyers and therefore help to determine the resale value of the car.

Unless the buyer is a snob...

You kinda answered that one yourself.

The only thing I'd be worried about with a G reg is corrosion. Combination of wind and Atlantic means its possible (if the car lived near the coast) that it got covered in spray frequently, similar with any west coast counties.

That said its only a matter of checking the car, and if not on the coast, not an issue.

Many people won't give the car any further thought if its a KY reg, resale is not a factor for me as I spend little on cars and change them frequently, there is no way on Earth I'd drive around in a KY reg, no way.

Kerry is a great spot for a weekend or a few days away :)
The vast majority of Kerry regs are driven by Kerry folk, as a Cork man I would not want people thinking I am from Kerry. It's that simple really, if I had a Kerry reg and 100 people in Cork saw me, the majority of them would think I'm from Kerry, feck that :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

I'm a Meath man and my last 3 cars have been D reg's, why would anyone care what reg your car is? Does it mean your suddenly a Kerry man because of the reg on your car!?

Lads, many Kerry folk don't buy Kerry regs so that says it all really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,686 ✭✭✭JHMEG

With a KY reg, like with a CE reg and a few others, there is the perception that the roads are generally dreadful in the majority of the county and that the suspenion will be shot and interior trim will be rattly. C and D wouldn't suffer from that perception as much, if at all.

KY also has the added disadvantage that when people see it they think of a type of jelly instead of a beautiful county in the south west of Ireland.

Ya, but who says "Wow, there's an E92 M3, that's so cool... no, wait... wait a minute... it's got a KY reg... what a pile of dung, look at the stupid head of the plonker in it too, what a tool..."
It's kind of like saying "I'd never buy a car with a K in the chassis number, cause K rhymes with Gay..."
A reg plate is just a bunch of numbers with a letter or two. Who cares? Berty is right. Appraise the car on it's merits, not whats on the plastic rectangular things.

Ya, you'd have to be driving around the whole time with cans of Murphys and bottles of Tanora in the car and talking like Micheal Martin just in case people would mistake ya. I was always careful to hang something red and white off the mirror when I was parking my KY reg around Cork city... especially during championship season...

Thats the same as the old thinking of never buying a car that was made on a Monday or a Friday.

Why do Irish people always go on their perceptions? I was Kerry last summer and the roads were fine, in most cases better than some other parts of the country.

Surely checking the actually state of the car would be more important than checking the letters on the reg?

I think you're missing the point here. Registrations affect value not because people should care but because they do. For example, let's imagine I found a year-old canary yellow Mercedes E63 for sale and loved the colour. Say I much preferred yellow to either the similar grey or black ones for sale. Would I pay the same or more for my yellow one? Would I f*ck, because I know i'd be hammered come resale.:)

Nobody is saying that it's not more important, that would be silly. What most people are saying is that the reg is often a factor when you sell the car later on, and certain regs, like Donegal, really put people off.

Thats it. Im not buying a car in Dublin because some scanger from Finglas may have driven it.

Im also not buying a car with a KK reg because apparently me living in North Tipperary would be an issue 1 day a year.

Im not buying a car in Galway because people in Limerick cannot pronounce Galway properly and that's where I spend most of my time.

Im not driving another MN reg because people in Dingle assumed the car was from Northern Ireland.

I wont drive a car from MH because..............................thats why( seems to be most peoples reason).

    So on and so forth.

Me being origanly from Dublin I would prefer a D reg. But that said the reg of a car would not put me off if the cars good, hence me owning an D, MO, SO and G reg cars so far.
