lag or ping or what???

im getting absolutely slaughtered lately,especially 1 on 1 confrontations.say i meet someone and start firing away and then they start firing back im usually the one that ends up dead,when i watch the killcam ive often not even let off a shot even though i started shooting first.would this be ping related or what??is there anything i can do about it??im on eircom 7mb and ping is usually between 80 and 100,its only recently started to happen

Its lag unfortunatley very annoying , your ping is very high hence you are 80/100 milliseconds behind.

that was quick is there anything i can do about it,ping has always been like that but never seemed to lag as much as it is now

Oh tell me all about it.. I have actually stopped playing the game online because of this.. Played one FFA last night to check if it was still as bad as ever and ended up 6-17.. I am not that bad.. I am usually in the right side of the k/d ratio...
I posted your very query on boards a while back and basically got the impression it's just tough luck... I never win a 50-50 battle now.. Actually was in a corner of a room camping like a little bitch as it was the only way I could get a kill and a sniper walked into the room.. i shot him he turned around and shot me.. In the Killcam I didn't even fire.. Thats what I am up against so I give up.. Tried everything possible and don't have a solution.

And it's only been like this since the update came out with the new maps.

Playing special ops with a mate these evenings to get my fix.

you can get on to eircom and complain , i wouldnt get your hopes up though , if its the same in the day as it is at night there might be something they can do , but if its only bad at night (6pm-12 mid) then it will go down as a contention issue.
I had a similar problem , ended up leaving dsl altogether.

just do what I do ...........about 1min into the game hit pause and check whats the story with your enemies connection . If theres more than two of them on a 4 bar connection .........leave the game

after you have done that,turn your firewall to low (or off) from here:
http://192.168.1.254/

Again this is only if you have Eircom,it worked for me:D

I don't think so , if that was the case the games would be very one sided like 6 four bars against 6 three bars .......they would absolutely destroy the other team . I think its just a case of they pick the best connection to be host then depending on your proximity to the host .........that will decide how many bars you have .

try it later at night . i think the quality of players improves then 2 loads of teamwork lack of tubes/runners kinda stuff . really pi**'s of my ma though :P

@creasy bear thats pretty much the jist i got from it too so unless we're both wrong :P

@davenchill is it really a good way to be knocking a firewall on low or off altogether ? i have mine right up at full and ive never had any problems connection wise

I change mine from medium to low there for an hour or two and it made no difference to my connection

It protects , i think dave thought the problem was with the nat settings .

Internet nasties for the most part.

I heard a good explanation to the layman years ago, think of your network interface as a pidgeon hole mailing system, each "hole" is port, each port has a specific function (different types of mail for different people/different programmatic communications for software applications), the firewall is the postman who decides if access to each port or hole is available, thus preventing you from getting unwanted mail or connections through which nasty ****e comes in.

just been on to eircom tech support,never again.the lad was absolutely clueless:mad:after telling him the problem he spent almost an hour trying to sort it out,he asked me to test ping it was 88,he tested it remotely or something and it was over 200 which he said was bad,then tried to update the firmware on my netopia with the latest zyxel firmware(told him twice beforehand what router i had)anyway to cut a long story short by the end of the conversation he thought i rang to complain about my download speed and seemed surprised when i said it was about ping as if i never mentioned it,told me my line was grand but suggested eircom ngb,im fit to kill at this stage unfortunately not on mw2 cos ill just get my arse kicked

Thats basically standard with eircom , its the ping at 84 thats the problem it should on average about 30.

As far as i can remember the upload for the 7 meg package it half a meg, i used to be on that package myself.
I think the problem is with the lines themselves, eircom upgraded most/all exchanges about 2 years ago , take mine for example the max d/l was 4 meg for the line but when they upgraded i was able to get 7 meg , even though i was told that the lines could only carry 6, during the day it was fine but any other traffic in the evening brought unstable speeds and high pings. It could be that the lines just cant take the speed causing the high ping.
Upgrading an exchange is one thing but the lines were never replaced and how long are they down there and what is there life span .... not very long i reckon afterall they're only copper.

Thank god for killcam. Hate it when I enter a room and blast a fellow half a dozen times just to see the replay and see myself wander aimlessly into a room and apparently just stare at him instead. At least I know for a fact when I'm wronged.

I'm sure sometimes I see people who should have got the jump on me, who I have killed, who must have themselves been lagging.

It seems to be good at some times and bad at others, and I find I just have to leave it when it's bad.

Agreed, I'm on Eircom 3mb and don't even try playing between 5pm - 10pm waste of time and my sanity..:D..it's hard enough to watch a youtube video even on 360p, without it buffering constantly, between these times.........I'll do anything else rather than play MW2 online, when it gets that bad..

There are two 7 mbit packages, 7 and 7.6mbit.

The 7.6mbit is the one people were upgraded from 3mbit to and has 672k upload and has 24:1 contention. It had high interleaving and high pings. They then introduced a new 7mbit package for gamers, its got 384k upload and 48:1 contention (same as 3mbit) but slightly better ping times. The 7mbit will get much slower in the evenings as the contention ratio is 48:1. Now consider that the max You're ever going to get on dsl is about 80% of the speed they offer (overheads of the protocol used to deliver it), 80% of 384k at 48:1 contention could easily be 100k (dial up is 56k) in the evenings when its busy.

Not sure if they're still offering the 7.6mbit package, but some people are still on it, I am as I prefer the extra upload and 24:1 contention. 7mbit is the one people usually get sold and is the one in all bundled phone packages, see the way the craftily changed their top package from 48:1 to 24:1 contention, it was always 24:1 before this

I had a ping of 70 on old ISprovider and used to have some decent games. Now switched to 3G o2 sim for xbox gaming and ping is about 130+ and now I win very few 1v1 and nowhere near as many kills per game. Its very annoying but the game is so damn addictive I find myself still playing when I can

same as meself still cant stop playing it,i started using sleight of hand pro for the quicker aiming and stopping power with fmj for as much damage as possible,slight improvement but top 3 finishes are a rarity these days,got 30/7 kd last night on salvage was delighted with meself,seem to do better on the new maps,until everyone has them sussed out anyway
