I am so glad I was referred to this thread by detective - thank you its been must helpful - I love the sound of Clomid - can my GP prescribe it or will I have to be referred as waiting for an appointment could take time - I have been diagnosed with PCOS and endo but on my last scan a while back the doc confirmed I was ovulating normally and I gave my body a break for a year by going on the mirena to help with the endo and my periods since taking it out have been pretty normal so I am hopfull - so again I want to start Clomid asap as my partner will be leaving the country in October for three months with work and I want to get going before he leaves and I dont want to wait - I hope GP can prescribe clomid

Welcome Cinderella - It's a difficult time but a happier time knowing there is help out there. I too have pcos but not endo. Chin up.;) Hopefully you will get the clomid. The doc will prob prescribe it when you have been trying for so long.

    Welcome, Welcome ;)

some GPs prescribe Comid, others not, but definitely make an appointment and ask, cheaper and quicker than getting a referral

    Can i just jump on . . :)

In regards to clomid - it is advisable to get it prescribed by specialist/gynae as they can monitor you better than a GP can with bloods & scans - very important while on clomid!!!!

Whats the point in being on it if its a/ not the correct amount to stimulate your ovaries or b/ its just not working for you or c/ you're being over stimulated on it!!

Thanks everyone - I would rather just get gp to prescribe as its so costly and plus with my partner leaving the country for a while in Oct I would rather get started asap rather then waiting ages to see gyne - I called my gyne for appointment but he secretary said as I have not attended in two years I have to be referred again - very annoying so I could be waiting three months here for another appointment I would rather get on the clomid and get going

ya that's a fair point alright. I know when I go on it the gynae wants me in a few days after finishing so he can scan me and look at how many follicles are maturing/what size they are etc....

I've not had any fertility issues, however I know a little about assisted reproduction from my work, and personally from what I know, I would prefer to be under the care of a fertilty specialist if being prescribed clomid as not all GP's are equipped with a: the technology and b: the knowledge to monitor you properly. You can be overprescribed clomid which can have detrimental effects on conception. If you are going to have your GP prescribe you clomid, make sure to quiz them about follow up care whilst taking it. I'm not saying that all GP's don't have a clue, but there are definately some who probably lack a little knowledge.

Gp's are brilliant, but at the end of the day they are a jack of all trades, masters of none and if you want the best care you should really see a specialist. You wouldn't go to a Gp if you had cancer to get chemotherapy, so why would you rely on one for fertility treatment?

Well it all depends on the semen analysis and how quick the results come back on that. OH is going in for same next Thurs. Assuming results take a week (really not sure how long) I'll be on day 4 of my new cycle so I don't think I'm going to get to avail of it next cycle, probably the cycle after. I'm saying this because of how everything in this country seems to take forever, and by the time I'd get in to see him for another appt. and be prescribed the Clomid it could be too late for next cycle.....

May, are you going to go back to the doc to confirm your pregnancy? Given what happen last time I'd demand a blood test, there'll be no risk of a false negative with a blood test

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 190 ✭✭May79

Yeah perhaps there could be a delay - All i can tell you is my experience, My hubby had semen test also, we didn't get results yet! We both figured if we didn't get a call we would be ok. Doc prescribed clomid the first day we attended and told me to start - however, i needed provera first to begin my period. One bonus you have is you do have af.

I don't think i want to go back to that man. He was so dismissive and my regular gp is off for 3 weeks - I'm back to specialist on the 18th so going to wait until then for bloods...clear blue digi tomorrow to see if the weeks have changed on it. I still don't have my period. i'm 37 days now with positive results on test strips. I'm just waiting now i guess until a blood tells me one way or the other. It's actually very frightening not knowing even though you kinda do know if you can understand that. I don't know any other GPs well enough to get in with.

you could go to one of the WellWoman clinics, not sure if they do a blood test, but you could call them and ask...

Maybe when the digi shows 'PREGNANT 2 WEEKS' (which I'm sure it will), just put it out of your mind then for a while, don't stress out til the 18th ;)

Went to GP today and have my referral letter for a Dr. Hickey in Limerick, hope I dont have to wait too long for appointment will call first thing in the morn....I asked my GP would be prescribe Clomid she said she does but not in my case as I have PCOS and endo and she said there would be risks and didn't want me to end up like octomom..
I am feeling positive now and at least the ball is rolling

that's great news, hopefully you won't be waiting too long

Well I hope I dont have to wait too long and I also hope that he is positive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭DetectivFoxtrot

Did you get an indication from your GP as to how long you should expect to wait? If not call and ask. My GP told me to expect 8 weeks, and it was 8 weeks bang on... it was good to know as I put it out of my mind for the two months and focussed on other things

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 133 ✭✭cinderella2010

I rang yesterday and his secretary said its between 8-10 weeks depending on the urgency and the urgency will be valuated by Dr. Hickey once he receives the letter - so will have to wait and see.

I must say the stress of this is taking a toll on my relationship and its giving more of an urgency to resolve matters and get knocked up asap - does anyone else have this problem

    not really, but I sympathise...
I only stress myself out, but I don't let it affect my relationship, and avoid dragging my husband into my various neuroses ;)

Only 5 days until we know for sure. Didn't do anymore home pregnancy tests. I was counting up, we just had 2 rounds of clomid 50mg. If it has worked that quickly it's mighty stuff and worth every penny.

Best of luck to all. Fingers crossed for next week ;)

I am still waiting on my appointment date - soon I hope

    is clomid expensive????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭DetectivFoxtrot

    is clomid expensive????

no! €28 for 6 month supply - So that would be about €5 each cycle! I was expecting it to be mad money :p It's all the appointments, scans, blood tests etc. that cost the big bucks!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 133 ✭✭cinderella2010

Really - does Health Insurance cover any of it
I know I will have to pay for consultation and he has his own scanner
what costs are bloods and what other costs should I be aware of

Clomid is great price - its good news :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭DetectivFoxtrot

    consult €200
    Semen Analysis €100
Blood tests - one was €97 the other was free, go figure
Scans - I believe are about €100 (have yet to have one)

it goes way up when you start talking about IVF, IUI, cryo egg storage etc etc, but not on that road yet thankfully.

am not sure about insurance cover. I am stockpiling all my receipts at present and will do a return to VHI in coming weeks, and tax claim on the balance

Hi detective - congratulations on your start. It's a great feeling. Everything i read about clomid is it can cause so many side affects but i took it while going to bed and all i can say i felt was tiredness throughout the day. I hope it works for you as well as it did for me.... I attended the doc yesterday and we are expecting our first in April 2011! I'm 5 weeks pregnant today.:)

    Ah May I'm delighted.

Ok - I've been a bit 'emotional' today. Not floods of tears or anything, but I had 4/5 sneaky teary moments. wtf?? Is it the Clomid?

I just started my holidays, taking off 2 weeks, and heading abroad tomorrow for a brill trip, so why am I down? Must be the drugs.....
