The Library during study/exam time

Robbed this idea from the FUCC guys over at http://bb.ucc.ie/

So, how's everyone finding the library at this time of the year?

Personally I haven't been using it as much, it's mobbed -- as it is every year -- I just spend my time over in the Booles or study at home.

Looking at the above forum, the general consensus is that no one likes people who grab a seat and then either; do nothing all day or leave the seat for the day with their stuff on it.

    Hellish time of the year!

Personally I study at home this time of year like your self. The library is too packed and people leaving a pile of books before departing for a hour annoy the hell out of me.

was in the library by 8.20 this mornin(usually in before 8 but the father had forgotten something) All my notes are online so i use the new extension part where the sockets and lights are. Every table and chair were taken yet if 40% of the people were actually at the table it was a lot. There were more people coming out of the library at 8.30 after dropping stuff off than going in.

Im just getting sick of it now to be honest. So many feckin wasters and ignorant people in our college. Bring back those time slips id say!!

Ahh, was just about to post about this...

There at half nine and not a single seat ! Gaahhhh, half an hour of study time wasted looking for a seat ! And now I'm wasting more time on boards !

Most the people there aren't even studying, they are walking around having huge conversations and/or on facebook !

And then the tutorial rooms always only have one person in them - they should make them an extension of the library for study month ! Would solve a lot of problems.

As a matter of interest, does anyone know if UCC or UL library is bigger ? I went to UL library for the past two years and its never not had a seat, but UCC seems full most the time.

There should be a loyalty card for students who go to the library all year or something IMO!

    Torments me too.

I agree somewhat but were they ever effective? Never heard so much about them tbh.

The thing that I really can't get my head around, is when 4 or 5 people have a 20 minute hushed conversation in the library, then head out for lunch.

    Where's the sense in that!?

I'd agree but the sizes of the halls intimidate/put me off. :o

What tutorial rooms do you use? I won't go near them. :pac:

Went in on Monday to return books, half the people weren't even sitting where their books were - loads of random chats going on!

If you want a half decent place and are willing to walk a small bit, try the city library on the Grand Parade, though in about two weeks it will become packed with LC students

Same with phonecalls, I'm seeing a lot of them around. Was in the returns section of Q+2 when a girl sparked up a conversation on a phone and was quite loud. A librarian snapped full of scorn: 'This is a library! No phone calls allowed!' Quality.

Dead right! If I do have to take a phone call, I'd go out by the computers by the lifts, loud enough out there! Even in my local library, I end up by the lifts because there is door separating me from the rest of the library

There isn't a whole pile else you can do if you are going to lunch?! :o

I have no problem with that. What personally annoys me is when some people leave a pile of books on a desk in the morning and bugger off for three or four hours.

That is just pure ignorance to be doing it now when the space is really needed! I did it once, where I left for nearly two hours but that was the middle of January when the place was half empty and it didn't matter, had to go to a lecture and then ended up going for food before rushing back to finish an assignment

Then go down to the security desk and report them. The four guys who work on the desk are all very approachable and have always done something when I complained about arseholes making noise.

At the very least you could tell the person to shut up, you might get the retarded "whatever look" but screw them exams are more important then ever.

Oh no it's fine by me as I was just dropping in to check for a couple of books that they wouldn't normally have on Q+3 so I was there for a minute. Anyway by the time she sparked up, she was shut down in side of 10 seconds. If it was continous in my area I'd have to fire a book at them.

Handy tip ext time there's noise or disturbance around you and you have a laptop, here's what the library say:

Here are the email addresses for the various floors. We would encourage people to contact the floor staff and report noise disturbances as otherwise staff may be unaware that someone is causing a problem. These are also handy if anyone has a query for floor staff.

    LAH@ucc.ie Q+3
    LibrarySocialSciences@ucc.ie Q+2
    LibraryLawDesk@ucc.ie Q+2
    LibraryScienceFloor@ucc.ie Q+1
    Informationdesk@ucc.ie Q
    specialcollections@ucc.ie Q-1
brookfieldlibrary@ucc.ie Boston Scientific Health Sciences Library (Brookfield)

Whats the average response time from an emailed complaint?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭samf

Dunno, never tried it myself. I'd imagine fairly fast though since they're always sitting with computers in front of them. Worth a go sometime anyway.

Me neither and it was a good idea posting all the emails as some people might not be comfortable making a complaint in person but for me you either tell them to shut up yourself or make a verbal complaint to a staff member. By and large I find the Boole staff are sick to the teeth of unruly students and are more then willing to bring them to task if given notice.

+1 on that - I've ended up going to my local library instead to find a number of other UCC students in there studying as well because the college one was too crowded!

Why not complain to the SU Library Officer and demand that ID cards be confiscated from unruly students. Staff are fed up of the crap. Complain and they will remove the problematic person.

I have tackled students recently for talking loudly and unfortunately for them they tried to be smart. They picked on the wrong person. I walked down, brought security up and the look on their faces when they were told to leave was priceless.

Use the protocols, and make the SU support the Library staff.

Next time you do that, will you let us know in advance!! I'd say the looks on their faces were priceless. Anyway confiscating cards wouldn't just solve it, sure anyone can get in once they have a card, group of three friends, two go in, one goes back out with two cards and gets the other one in. I know people who have forgotten their card getting in behind friends who have their ID cards

True but at least its a step in the right direction. What does a replacement card cost €20 or so? Try sitting an exam without your ID card.

Yeah about 20 I think. It is a step in the right direction alright

I've sat quite a number of exams and I have to say alot of examiners don't even look at the student card if you have the timetable printed out with you - I always have both just in case but is it one or the other is all that's required?

Would take the risk of not brining it/having one? Surely nobody would.

I have sat exams without the timetable. I think the Photo ID is the all important aspect of it so Student Card it is.

Well I know you can sit it without the timetable I'm just saying that I've had both for every exam I've sat and my ID's rarely been looked at - just the timetable it's a bit odd is all

Maybe its because the exam number is on the timetable but not your ID card, I remember them looking at my timetable but not my card last year - then again last year, one of our exams was completely disrupted because our lecturer managed to give us the copy of the answer book rather than the test!

i'm a first year and i find it difficult at times to find a computer in the library apart from friday evenings. I can't imagine what it will be like in December i think i'd be better off saving up and getting a laptop or netbook as i would save a lot of hassle and could work away on my assignments

At the moment? I don't see much difficulty. Have you been around the library properly? There are plenty of computers available when I've seen them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭maglite

There are 723 open access computers in UCC, wander the library, Boole basement(all rooms), Kane building etc

    http://www.ucc.ie/en/sit/OpenAccessITCentres/StudentITCentreDetails/

TBH if you can afford it I would get a laptop, second hand, secondhand desktop even, its nice to just do some stuff at home. TBH you could get an old desktop for free if you look for one, should be fine for documents etc, look at open office
