Rounds just aren't done with people my age, I've never stolen drink at a party (which does happen a good bit, especially when you don't know everyone there) and the only reason I'm being so tight is cos I have no money. The only scabbing I do is when it's offered to me.

I'm tight because I have to be, not because I'm an asshole!

I didn't say you stole drink, When you go to a party take something to drink with you..
I've no money either, Just got means tested for the dole to princely sum of 39.10 euros (for a 30yo married man..But that is another story)...But if I can't afford to go out...I can't afford to go out..

I never said, nor did I say you were an asshole...I was pointing out that the preception of others will linger with you for a long time to come..

Dunno about buying the drinks but he's a dab hand at turning the water into wine...

The "go to" topic of conversation nowadays always seems to be the severe lack of money - especially among students. I'm going on 20 this summer and going into second year college in September. My dad is self-employed so because of everything I don't ask for any money of my parents any more. I've been looking for a job since last September and nothing has worked! I managed to get a job playing session guitar for a musical before Christmas which has just about tied me over until now. Obviously I don't have it too bad - my only spending is really on drink and going out.

So my question is how do you live on the cheap? I've resorted to cycling everywhere - regardless of distance - including nights out and getting to college as opposed to taxis, buses or luases (I take the Luas occasionally but have never paid), I don't buy any food - just eat at home, I haven't bought a single drink in a club/pub for more than €3 and even then I haven't bought many - I just sneak in either Tesco Value vodka or whatever is left over in the drinks cabinet. The very small bit of money I have, I wait until there is an exceptionally special offer to buy booze (48cans of Blackthorn for €20 was my last purchase). I try to scab as much of anything as I can off friends. I try to leave my wallet at home as much as I can so I don't end up going for pints cos others are or buying food for the sake of it, and every tight c*nt trick I can think of. All in all - I'm a bollocks to go out with.

Is anyone as tight as I am? If so please tell me how

By any chance are you studying to be an accountant...?!!

Would you consider taking out a student loan? Most credit unions, and often banks, will allow you to take a loan out, and defer paying it off until you graduate.

Have you any skills? Often people are more than willing to pay money for people to type final year projects, dissertations, or even grinds?

Also, if your father is self employed, you should be eligible for a grant - This would be paid in 3 instalments, and your registration fee for college would be paid as well. I would definitely advise you to apply anyway, even if you think you aren't eligible - you never know!

I was in the same position as you last semester - luckily, I managed to find a job - it sucks to have to struggle all the time, college years are supposed to be all about having a great time on limited funding!

Nah I'd prefer to be living on nothing than in debt to be honest. Could you tell me more about that grant though??

well it depends, you'd have to look into it, as far as I know there are loopholes with self-employed parents to getting the grant, as long as the other parent isn't working? There are generally cut off limits though, so it would depend on how much they make as well. But I would strongly advise going for the grant anyway, even if you think you won't get it, you'd be surprised! Just get the form from your local city/county council, fill it out (as far as I know you'd need some paperwork like P60 etc).

If you are living out of home you could apply in your own right (with your income as the basis for assessment) and it would be more likely that you would get a grant.

Just look up the website of your local city/county council and find the "Higher Education Grant" section.. it'll tell you everything you need to know! :D
