Radio Station Imaging

What station do you think has the best on-air imaging (jingles, liners, promos, voiceovers...etc...)?

Mine would be BBC Radio 1. Chris Moyles' jingles are unbelieveable, his American voice over guy is brilliant. Radio 1 have a great sound all through the day. It's young, fresh and stylish and brilliantly produced

On our side of the pond, Spin 103.8 would be the best IMO. The VOs, the promos, jingles..... As with Radio 1, it's fresh, catchy and well produced.

My least favorite would be RTE 2FM or Dublin's 98FM.... 2FM because it should be miles better. 98 purely because I hate the voice guy! Yucky.

    Aye? What about you?

I haven't listened to it in a good while now, but Talksports imaging was quite good. Most of it done by ex-The Bill actor, Steven Hartley.

The Most annoying has to be Newstalk's - "Different nation, Different station", "Listen...think...now...feel" and the latest one which I can't think of at the moment, but I know it irritates me.

Radio 1 and Spin's imaging makes me cringe. Makes me think of the radio station where Garth and Wayne go for an interview to promote their festival, or the "Dingo and the baby" episode of Family Guy! Or worse still...Atlantic 252's naff as hell imaging.

I usually navigate away from a radio station that uses a faux-yanky voiceover guy or too many fx in their sweepers etc. It does my head in.

I think 6music's is good (they're up for a Sony award for best station imaging this year), and 2FM's is inoffensive.

Try 96FM in Cork. They use Sandy Thomas and he leaves the rest in the shade.

I love the Yank voiceovers (Except when it's a guy doing a crap american accent)...

I dont even want to mention his name cos Im afraid it will end up in a I love/hate him, but I love Ray Foleys jingles. I like the today FM jingles for the station too.

Surely the whole american voiceovers thing has had its day - ten years ago, in fact. Sounds utterly jaded and worn out to me, on any station. We're not in the US and its not somewhere we should aim to ape culturally either.

Yeah we should have Arab voiceovers!

Agreed re: Foley's jingles - I think they're excellent and perfect for that show and timeslot.

Certainly, it'd be great if he updated them more often, like Moyles does - but there's a huge difference in the budget of Today FM for things like that and that of BBC Radio 1 - especially these days!

No, this is Ireland, we should have IRISH voiceovers rather than some chump doing a cod-American accent.

    Good point.

*SAVE UP YER POCKET MONEY FOLEY!!!!*

Moyles' jingles actually make me tingle inside. The whole choir thing is brilliant.

    The cheesy song is excellent!

Yes but you have to judge it against the frankly disgustingly large budget he has for that show. When you have millions of the public's money to spend on your jingles, of course they'll be amazing.

RE Foley and Moyles' jingles, that's a fair point. I reckon Today Fm can splurge out on a new set for Foley. I like the jingles, but the music needs to be freshened up. Hearing the same piece of jingle music every day is annoying even if there is different lyrics.

Can't abide the female voice over they use on Newstalk for the Premiership, the adverts on the Breakfast show, Talking History and the rest. She also appears on Country Mix.

Not sure what effect she is trying for but it makes my skin crawl.

Every irish VO I've ever heard. The main one I remember is Phantom's and Today Fm's voiceovers. More so the female one on Today Fm. She annoys me.

Also the Stupid irish voices on ads.

True. Any producer worth their salt can knock up sweepers and jingles at a very low cost to the station. I was able to make some decent ones after teaching myself Adobe Audition for about a week! And they're fun to make so I think there's no excuse for hearing the same jingles over and over again.

re: Irish accents in station imaging - I honestly would prefer to hear Irish accents rather than American or *shudder* an Irish person putting on an American accent. It makes me cringe. But I know what you mean about some Irish voiceovers affecting a posh or bogger accent. It can be just as bad.

Yeah I'm pretty good at making jingles and imaging and stuff. It's quite enjoyable...

Yeah a good Irish VO I can stick. but not the terrible ones who try to put on an accent or *IMO* are trying to sound different then to how they actually sound. If it's done well, grand. If not, fack off ya hacks.

Plus I'm just biast towards the American VO.

I'm not a fan of this years jingles. I liked the old jazzy ones. I don't like the remix of the cheesy song. The old one had more UMPH!!!

Interesting thread. I'd be interested to hear from posters with experience in jingle production if you'd like to produce some Irish voiced jingles for our online radio station (RadioActive.ie). We've a small budget and really like to promote Irish talent. So if you're interested, leave me a private message. :)

FM104's is pretty good but not as good as it was until May 2011. They brought in a new Irish voice who sounded very boring, and have since replaced her with another Irish female back in July.

IMO - 104 sounded best in 2007, they have had Marc Silk (US Male v/o) for years and they had Julie Love (I think thats her name) - Scottish female who did work for Clyde 1 in Glasgow. In '07, they also ran the 2004 Music4 'Radio City' package - It sounded great on air (Adrian Kennedy used one of the jingles).

    Take a listen here: http://www.jinglenews.com/audio/airchecks/fm104_140607.mp3

4FMs imaging is also good - perhaps the 98 tag line 'now is good' is the underlying issue at 98FM

104 really need to bring the pitch down on their songs to normal pitch again, sounds awful, cheap and teenage discoish.

Radio 1 still on top for me - closely followed by Capital FM and SPIN 1038.

RedFM in Cork is still godawful. Mainly due to the droning inflection of the woman who does it, because it's otherwise generic enough. She's like Lloyd Grossman on Quaaludes.

On a show to show basis, not that I listen much, but Derek Mooney's are particularly bad-the louder and more raucous the background music, the better. Very dischordant. And he does that daft thing (which Red FM) also do, where they repeat a key phrase...a...key...phrase after every second sentence, complete with funny echo. Not forgetting the random whooshes between segments. Pointless.

I had to sign up to post something. I work in radio.I don't think any of you do. Apart from the people who post how good their stuff is , i.e. 'Fago', the imaging on Spin is great. You have no idea about identities and how to keep a continuous sound. Also, when so many sponsors are involved, you have to bend over for them also. However, even with all the money in the world, there are all a lot of folk who think that sung jingles suck.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,910 ✭✭✭✭RoundyMooney

Surely people don't have to work in radio to comment on it? There wouldn't be much point in working in radio in the first place if there wasn't an audience, no?

For me, it comes down to, "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like." As, I suspect, does every other listener.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 80 ✭✭Chris 80

Yes.But you should really learn a little more about how a radio station works before you cast a review. Are you there when the painting is being painted?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,910 ✭✭✭✭RoundyMooney

    Nope.

But I'd argue that the end result is everything!

And subjective, in that opinions vary, that too.

Many people on the Radio forum work directly in the business, some even verified representatives.

I myself do also but to be honest if a station employs a head of station imaging/production there is no excuse for stale imaging or promos.

If someone comments on how great SPIN's imaging is well, they've done it right. They've created an IMAGE that people remember. Take SPIN South West for example they ran very successful imaging back when they started with the tagline/rhyming jingle "102, 103 and 94.7 SPIN..SPIN South West!" people remember the name when you say SPIN people instantly know what you're talking about, job done!

Any producer worth their money with a bit of creativity can work a sponsor into their imaging very easily. I do agree with RoundyMooney about Red FM's imaging though, way past it's sell by date. Their top of hour and out of break imaging has been the same for years.

    Firstly,

SPIN's imaging is not at all made/produced in-house, it was brought in from Puretonic Media (Now part of Reelworld). And 98fm's jingles were made by Puretonic, but their imaging by Benztown Branding (I'm pretty sure).

The Red fm jingles were purchased in 2004, it must be costly for them as a station as they have to pay back 15% of the purchase price each year that they use the jingles. It is rare to see a station with jingles for that long. I think their imaging is great, but for some reason that Irish female gets on everyone's nerves.

That Spin South West jingle is no longer being used, insted they have generic 'SPIN' jingles.

98FM have their own in house imaging producer for specifically imaging. But buy their ramps and sungs from another company.

SPIN South West don't just use generic jingles they have got ones that specifically say "SPIN South West" I've heard them yesterday, they've reworked them into their new imaging.

SPIN 1038 on the other hand only buy ramps and sung jingles from Puretonic the rest of their imaging is produced in house.

I am aware that SPIN and 98fm have their own commercial producers (Lisa Dignam and Paul Duffy), but I don't think that they produce the imaging.

Paul in 98 might, but I know for a fact that Puretonic Media produce SPIN's imaging and sung jingles.

    Hi Gavin,

Lisa - Spin Production Manager here :)

Don't usually post at all but just want to set the record straight in regards Spin 1038 imaging.

While we used to get all our imaging from Puretonic. We currently produce all our imaging in house.

We do still use the sung jingles and beds from Puretonic however.

Paul Duffy is no longer with 98, he's with 4fm at the moment!

Either way - it's nice to see all the positive comments here and I'm glad you all, for the most part, seem to like it,

    Thanks,

    L
