The awards are all politics. DCUfm were due to win an award and not being most improved nor best society (this will probably happen if or when they actually go FM) they were given the first other award they qualified for.

The way I see it they were given best website because it was felt that they deserved an award for running a good radio station and being that they stream on their website they have a link to the best website award.

Now that's not me saying they didn't deserve an award, if there was a media award they would win hands down imo, but they didn't build their own website so I dont think they deserved that specific award.

DCUfm isn't a stand alone society, it's run under the umbrella of MPS. And MPS did win most improved soc (not just at the DCU C&S awards but at the BICs as well), and that was down to the improvements made not just with DCUfm but with DCUtv and other events too.

    I dunno, like.

I was merely trying to take a stab at MMA students because some of the current crop of first years tend to make ridiculous comments to fill their giant egos.

Anyone who did social studies with Des last year will know who I'm on about. Anyway, DCUfm...HELL YEAH 10 awards last night...Well done!!!!!!!!

I'm first year MMA... I know what your on about with the lectures.

I don't think anyone in the class is doing radio atm,
I tried last year. I was helping out some show till they decided they didn't need me, then I was helping with a morning news, but the two other who were supposed to help me never showed up so I was writing and reading the news bulletins all my myself.
Maybe next year ill try again.

i'm 2nd year mma and i've had no dealings with the 1st years this year however it is not beyond the realm of belief that they could be a bit arrogant, however it's unfair to paint all of MMA with this brush

some of us are decent human beings :D

I said some of the current crop had big egos, not all of the current crop.

from what i've been told, the stream will work for some people, but not for others.

this is completely at random from what i've heard, i tried it on my laptop with chrome, nothing, i've tried a mac with chrome/safari/firefox, nothing, i've had friends try wired lines on both and still nothing, but we'r assured it's working on some peoples computers at random..

Well done to DCUfm on winning best website.

    I personally wouldn't choose a theme from
    http://www.iloveyouwp.com/tribal-wordpress-theme.html

I would've thought a bunch of multimedia could make a website from scratch.

Also wouldn't've thought you could win with a ready made site, must remember this for next year.

And seemingly they paid for it?

For those who haven't seen their site: http://dcufm.com/
The working demo of the "theme": http://www.gorillathemes.com/tribal/
This kinda annoys me. When people actually code things from scratch, spend hours figuring out design and implementing it its kinda a joke that we could have spent 10 minutes installing and what another 10 to find a template made for us and win.

Notes this down for next year..

Wow. Winning an award for a purchased wordpress theme? That seems very dodgy to me. Did nobody on the judging panel actually read the part on the nomination form about how the site was built?

This is insane, who cares what the platform for the website is?

The website more than likely won the award for the constant updates containing info about the society and events around DCU (complete with pictures), actually hosting their radio station and the fact that they still went to the effort of organizing the new domain, website, logos and additional content this year.

Somehow, I think the post below alone took more than 20-odd minutes. Something about the times along the side kinda give it away...

I was not talking about the content, I was talking about creating the site. Plus that post wasn't even up during the judging process.

And as I highlighted above, the creation of the site probably has little to do with how the award is given out. It is FAR more likely to be the content found on it, something which the DCUFm website had in abundance.

It's not just about that post though, they've kept the site constantly up to date and packed it with relevant information.

Granted, the blog only dates back to the start of March, but it's been updated two or more times pretty much every week since then. It's linked in well with flickr and twitter accounts that seem to be very active too and all the other pages and info on the site are relevant and detailed. Plus it does have a live radio feed. Only thing I don't like about it is that they've removed the "Powered by Wordpress" bit at the end and just put in "by Steve Conlon" which is a tad misleading.

I'm not a big fan of dcufm itself, I'm sure it's ok for a student radio station, but I hardly ever listen to it. The website however, is fully deserving of its award. Just because they used a wordpress skin doesn't mean it should be looked down on. Otherwise the best website award would have to go to whoever redesigns their site each year. Content should always be valued above design I can't see any other society websites kept as up to date, navigable or as informative as the dcufm one.

That post was up a week before the BICS. What's more, the fact that it still won the C&S award without a post like that says a lot for the rest of the site.

What you said was: "we could have spent 10 minutes installing and what another 10 to find a template made for us and win." I know you're not talking about content, and it's a shame that you think you can win without it (and in 20 minutes, apparently). The actual award-winning ones will have decent content, which DCU FM put the effort into doing.

May be going a little off-topic, but speaking of design and content and stuff, noticed this on the bottom of the page.
DCUfm by Steve Conlon. Content provided by Alan Regan and Denis McEvoy. Podcast powered by podPress (v8.8).

Now, if Alan and Denis are the ones responsible for the content, and the page itself is just a wordpress template, then what's Steve responsible for?

Possible getting the website setup with Wordpress and the theme? The logo? Putting everything together?

After listening back to some DCUfm recordings, I can't stress enough how important it is that they get another mic. Far too many shows have more than two people and it sounds very bad when three people have a conversation and only two can be heard.

I've a copy of the guidelines for BICS judges, the guidelines for best webstie says the quality and accuracy of the content is the most important part of judging a website, "the use of graphics and design features in the creation of an attractive web template" is second on the list.

They may have paid for a template, which I think should play against them when it comes to judging, but the graphics are mostly theirs.

As for the stream, I agree with Nekroman, it seems pretty random to me too.

Did you people make that bottle of wine yourselves?

If not I will have nothing to do with you and am appalled.
