    Whats the story here lads?
A radio station that isn't on the radio even.
Has anyone managed to listen to any of the programmes?

I know a few lads involved in certain shows and even they admit its a joke of a situation.

You can listen to it at www.dcufm.com (which was just awarded best website at the BICS, so best student society website in Ireland). It's on 24/7.

It's certainly not a joke, it has come on loads from previous years. The quality of the programming is fantastic, and has been commeded by everyone who listens to it including national broadcasters. It also has four nominations in the Smedias coming up soon.
It's a college radio station run by amateur students who volunteer, run on a tiny budget. Have a look around and tell me where you'd get more passion and dedication among members.

Yeah, it's actually quite good. No idea what you're on about.

I'd also point out, two post account created today. Not saying that it's suspicious...

Unfortunately, that was just for the start of the year. Lecturers and exam coordinators didn't really appreciate it.

The reason that DCUfm is not available on fm has been aired quite frequently in the College View and on here. I'll say it again for the OP's benefit. The DCUfm studio, in the Hub, is not wheelchair accessible. This is contrary to the most basic of the BAI's requirements to get a 5 year institutional licence. The management of DCUfm are still working with college officials to get this rectified. But, until such time as DCUfm is available on the fm band you can listen online at DCUfm.com, as Diarmsquid said.

Check out the schedule on the website, there are dedicated metal shows, and plenty of non-indie music on it.

Because it was annoying and because the music was dreadful.

Yes i've heard of these rewards. Baffles me really how a "radio" station that isnt even on the radio can get rewards.

Personally, I think DCUfm has some good shows (especially Action Replay). Also, some of the presenters were nominated for Smedias, so clearly they're doing something right!

Because their website is excellent. Hence 'Best Website'. Seriously mate, debates tend to work better when you have a slight clue what you're on about.

It's actually 'awards' and not 'rewards'. DCUfm are not bounty hunters, although they may start with people like you.

I dont take much interest in DCUfm at all (should it even be called DCUfm?), but anyways - why should a website be taken into account when awarding a radio station? Surely it should be solely about the quality of their broadcasting.

Well actually they are nominated for 4 smedia awards (which the ceremony for takes place this wednesday) which are solely for quality of broadcasting.

    haha!!

DCUfm is deffo not something to be slagged in my opinion. Over 100 students work really hard to make it great and to gain experience and many have been rewarded for this, especially this year. I think ' one a the lads' or whatever your username is, you should volunteer this year and see how good it is :)

Well, this thread degraded fast. OP, you could've at least saved face instead or resorting to that.

That said, you obviously only started that account to troll, considering you've broken the charter at least twice now. So do whatever till the mods get on.

Maybe to you it is. to your average DCU student they simply couldnt give a ****e.

But in fairness how do you expect students to just go and stream it on their laptops? It is a tough one I will agree.

I assume the idea of putting speakers around campus was obviously toyed about with? It's a hard one to market

You have a point there. It's difficult to get students interested when we only webcast. We are going to try to work with the college and the union to make sure we can apply for a 5 year institutional licence as soon as is humanly possible.

Any suggestions for combating the average student's apathy would be more than welcome :D

The awards they won were for 'website of the year' and MPS for 'most improved society', not for 'FM station of the year'.

In any case, the quality and quantity of shows on DCUFM has gone up a huge amount compared to last year. And I do hope they get the situation with the wheelchair access sorted out, it'd be great to able to listen to them on FM because they're quite good in fairness.

One thing really annoys me about DCU. There seems to be this urge to discredit peoples hard work at every opportunity, especially in regards to the college media.
No one has ever claimed DCUfm is perfect. However it has been transformed from a station that was once run very poorly to one that produces and airs content for all tastes and accomodates over 100 students from a range of faculties which is something the College View has never done.
The management in DCUfm (of which I am not part of) want more than anything to get the station onto the airways and yes, become a properly functioning radio station, accessible in every car and on every ipod in the country.
    And it will happen.
The only reason it hasn't happened yet is due to the unwillingness of the SU, the SPC and the OSL is push for the station to be fully wheelchair accessible.
However it looks like the incoming executive are determined to achieve this so it looks like next year could be another great year for the station.
Let's remember as well, MPS were one of just two societies in the entire university to win an award at the BICS. And they picked up two awards at that. I think that says something about the work the society and its members are doing in DCU.

Tbh I don't really like DCUFM but I think criticizing it for something it has no control over is ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,969 ✭✭✭robby^5

I know people care about getting the station on FM, but does it not stand to reason that more people might listen on a computer anyway? They shouldn't be criticised for it, they should actually be applauded for doing so well online.

    Haha, cheers :)

But yeah just to back up what most other people have been saying, the station has almost undeniably come on leaps and bounds this year. New management, new stream, new website, new schedule, a lot of new 1st year volunteers etc. That's not to discredit the work last years team did either in pretty much resurrecting the entire station from the ground up. A lot of what we achieved this year wouldn't have been possible if the groundwork wasn't established by last years committee and we'd be the first to recognise that.

I don't mind if there's some people out there that just don't like some of the shows, there's tons of popular stations I couldn't listen to and all I do is just don't bother tuning it. But making arguments like we shouldn't be allowed enter society awards because of something out of our control is pretty funny.

Well that kind of backfired on him, not only did he get himself banned but the thread has now shown that quite a few people enjoy the station and applaud them for streaming online. Don't you just love it when that happens? :)

Basically if you are devoid of a taste in music and lacking in originality then DCUFM is the station for you.

Aren't dj's supposed to have knowledge of music? And not music in general mind, a particular dj should have his/her particular genre that his/her show is based around. Not pop 24/7. F*ck me its awful.

have you even looked at the DCUfm schedule? with the Metal Module on at 9Pm monday night and Rock N'Roll radio on tuesday night at 8Pm ther is far more than the usual pop 24/7. That and the more genre specific shows have presenters who are nothing but passionate about the genre they represent, the effort they put into their shows show this perfectly.

maybe you should try listening to the station more often before you come on here and try become a keyboard commando

Well done to DCUfm on winning best website.

    I personally wouldn't choose a theme from
    http://www.iloveyouwp.com/tribal-wordpress-theme.html

I would've thought a bunch of multimedia could make a website from scratch.

Also wouldn't've thought you could win with a ready made site, must remember this for next year.

And seemingly they paid for it?

Completely disagree. There are several socities with no technical element which may also not have members skilled in those areas. In cases like that there is no harm in either paying someone to do it or, in this case, paying for a theme.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭Carri

The purpose of the National Awards is to recognise the huge effort made by the many individuals who run student societies across Ireland. The National Awards are a means of recognising this dedication and are an opportunity to celebrate the importance and value that societies contribute to college life.

I love the fact that paying for a website is classed as effort. There's soo many other websites for DCU Socs that are done from scratch. Which people put their hard work and time into. It just seems unfair that a society can win with a site they bought for ~$70 (according the to site linked above)

True, but to give them an award for something they didn't do themselves is a bit much, I would've imagined you could only qualify for the award if the society actually created the site.
