Had a glass of the Flying Dog edition of International Arms Race...

I think I preferred the Brewdog version, but neither was bad. Whichever one didn't win was my favorite.

Got a 6 pack of Magic Hat #9 there this evening.

Not too sure what to make of it to be honest. IDK if it tastes like an American ale or an English ale. It is definitely very refreshing though.

I'll have to crack open a few more before I judge it properly.

Salt House just started selling Porterhouse Plain on tap the other day. Really enjoying a few before I head home tonight. It really is a great pint o' Plain! it's your only man!

I shared a bottle of the brewdof one the other day and found it utterly revolting!
The Flying Dog one is probably the weirdest beer I've ever tasted but I actually enjoyed it!

got a btl of this today http://www.birzualus.lt/alus.php?a=vidutinis05&k=e

    a 1 litre plastic bottle @ 7%, one to share i reckon.

last night had my 2nd btl of Dungarvan C+O stout and really enjoyed this one compared to the btl i had last week, the btl last night was much warmer compared to the "cold" btl last week.

over the last 3 weeks had about 15 different beers and my favourite was the Raven IPA

Could someone recommend something nice to have in Against the Grain tomorrow afternoon? I've tried a lot of the stuff they have on draught so bottles or cask would be desirable. In general I prefer to avoid lager but if there's something unmissable I might indulge. I particularly like stouts and pale ales. Perhaps someone might have a suggestion?

    Crew IPA again.
I liked it before and I quite liked it again but couldn't shake of the notion that it tastes remarkably like Lilt!

Galway Bay Burried at Sea Milk Chocolate Stout should be on cask in there at the minute and its lovely.

Nomád Karel Česká IPA 16° one of my favourite Czech IPA's now.
What I like here too is if you want they will bottle you some beer at the bar to bring home.
Still cannot get used to very smokey pubs so its great you can get a litre bottle filled with your favourite beer and go home and have a few beers with friends etc.

Whenever I'm away and in a country where the smoking ban hasn't come in I'm always amazed that smoking in pubs never bothered me over here. :)

Have a nice few to try over the next while. Anyone had any of these before? Opinions?

Noticed that my local Tesco had started stocking Sierra Nevada Pale Ale during the week and was really looking forward to having a couple of bottles tonight. But, they were totally sold out of them when I went up for them a while ago. :(

I suppose it's good news though that it's selling well, meaning that Tesco will stock it again and maybe even more of their range or other American pale ales.

Settled with a bottles of Fuller's IPA, Pilsner Urquell and Wrasslers stout, with I surprised to find up there.

I've noticed my Tesco's has started selling Goose Island's IPA too, nice to see some progress being made for craft beer.

Having a Brewdog Hardcore later on, mad for my DIPA's lately since Punk/5AM Saint haven't been as tasty for a while now imo. Does anybody know what's the story with getting Hardcore here as I am seeing less and less bottles of it in the usual places ?

Had Goose Island's Juliet recently, absolutely atrocious. 20 euros for a drink that tasted of vinegar. Have actually never had a great Goose Island beer before

I really like that beer but it is a very specific style and not to everyone's taste.
Their Sofie is a truly beautiful beer - not sour like the Juliet but it has a lovely dry finish.

Personally I think the Goose IPA is a lovely beer, a benchmark for US style IPAs I reckon.

If you're struggling to find Hardcore, have you tried Tesco's American IPA? It's brewed by brewdog and I'm pretty sure it's the rebadged Hardcore. All their UK stores stock it.

Tried this in my local the other day, not knowing anything about it, just noticed it in the fridge. Was certainly surprised when I saw 9.2% on the bottle, and didn't like it at all - thought it was reminiscent of mouthwash (I'm not generally keen on really strong beers though - ~7.5% is my limit...)

    7.5% exactly?

Tried Well's banana bread beer Saturday night, really enjoyed it. Bit of a novelty but can see myself indulging in it every so often.

Also tried Wychwood's Gingerbread beer, wasn't keen on this, flavour was too invasive for my liking and ended up pouring it down the sink.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

~7.5% meaning around 7.5 - i.e. I've tried a few in the 7-7.5 range that I liked, but I can't think of any 8%+ beers that I've really liked (admittedly from a fairly small sample).

I used to think like that too. In fact, for some reason I even started a thread saying as much. My tastes have totally changed now though. There are plenty of beers out there that are over 7% that you'd hardly even notice the alcohol.

    Over the Christmas I've had (among others);

    Erdinger Weissbier Pikantus 7.3%

Thornbridge Saint Petersburg Imperial Russian Stout 7.7%

Great Divide 17th Anniversary Wood Aged Double IPA 10% (One of the nicest beers I've ever had!)

    Fyne Ales Superior IPA 7.5%

It's really just trial and error to see what ones suit your own tastes but I thought all those beers were fantastic.
