Are you going to try stick with Lansdowne Road for as long as you can? The O2 caught on very quickly but it is a catchy name. Aviva on the other hand is a very bland corporate name.

We'll see what happens when it actually gets up and running and the Aviva media blast begins its attempt to change our minds through sheer exposure. Right now, I still think "Lansdowne Road" but Aviva aren't just going to sit back and hope for the best. That's the whole point, right?

    Geddit?

    Point?

I think Aviva is a much more catchier name than O2. I've already started calling it that.

why not call it ... "the old lansdowne"

Wait... You're calling the O2 that?

Good idea, actually. Me too, now.

Lansdowne. I don't care how much money some bollox multi national company put in to it. They didn't do me any favours when I was renewing insurance so I wont be doing them any favours when tourists ask; "Ver khan ve finz ze Abiba stazium?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,376 ✭✭✭✭rossie1977

as much as people say they loath corporate named stadiums, they tend to catch on fast

emirates, allianz arena, reebok, o2, walkers stadium, Britannia

this time next year everyone will be calling the place the aviva

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

The stadium on Lansdowne road named after that multinational Insurance company.

I don't get why exactly they pspent €50 million on naming a stadium after them. Are people really going to take out a policy with them just because they have a stadium named after them.I'd be more tempted to take out a policy with them if they decided to give €50 off to the next 1 million policies they sell.

It'd be one of the best things I see all year if the Irish public soundly reject the "Aviva" slave-name and instead persist on calling it"Lansdowne Road" for the duration of their sponsorship. Can't see it happening tho. Plus it's going to be tough because once the the final lick of paint is put on the place the media are going to be bombarding us with "Aviva Stadium this and Aviva Stadium that".

If you don't want to call it Lansdowne then I'd be equally happy if you chose to call it the "ToiletBowl". It looks like one after all.

I for one welcome this new wave of corporate naming conventions and hope to see more in the near future. Such as Tampax Theatre and Senekot Stadium. Really appeal to what people want.

Yeah, I drove past it the other day. I'll continue to call it by its location. I also call the Point the Point and Sellafield is still Windscale. :)

Sometimes I'll refer to it as 'the Cathedral of Southside Sport', depending on who I want to irk.

No idea where any of them are despite occasionally hearing the names, although I'd assume that the Walkers one is in Leicester.

Do you still pay for things with shillings and listen to the wireless? (me too! :o)

So what if they're paying €50 million for the rights for it? I couldn't care less, it's not my money.

The Aviva's definately gonna catch on. I'm calling it the Aviva already.

Too right. It'll be a cold day in hell before I refer to the Jones Road Sportsground as Croke Park.

Aviva is quite a nice name. I call it both.

    "The Landsdowne Multidome".

Really trips off the tongue: "Hey Jimmy, you coming down the landsdowne multidome later?" "Nah international friendlies are overpriced something awful. Bloody FAI..."

To be fair, those examples you gave are all new stadia on new sites. Landsdowne road is built on the same site.

If they paid had for the whole thing then fair enough. But they only paid about 10% of the cost.

The Stephen Gately arena, or just Stephen.

I still call Harry Crosbie's old place The Point and will continue to call the new stadium Lansdowne Road. I'm so glad that the Munster branch of the IRFU didn't whore Thomond Park out to the evils of consumerism like has happened with the other two venues.

Nope, that is what someone else has paid a load of cash to have written on the side of it temporarily for a few years until someone else comes along and pays a bit more to have their brand written on the side. What it is, is a stadium on Lansdowne Road.

No, it's a stadium on Lansdowne Road that will be called the Aviva Stadium until they stop sponsoring it, at which point I'll be calling it whatever it is then. As has already been mentioned, it hasn't done the Britannia or Emirates Stadiums any harm

It will always be a stadium on Lansdowne Road though, so why call it after a sponsor when that could change yearly. No idea what or where the Britannia or Emirate are, although I have heard of the Emirates I guess that means either the Britannia sponsors a rubbish team or they just got a new deal recently.

    Where is the O2?

Because they paid for it and frankly it could be called the McDonalds-Burger King-Superquinn-Stupid Flanders Stadium for all I care, if that's what it's called, that's what I'll call it

The Emirates Stadium is where Arsenal play football, and the Britannia Stadium is where Stoke City play, and they are not a rubbish team and the sponsorship is not recent. The point I'm trying to make is that companies sponsoring stadiums doesn't hurt anyone, it's just a name, so I don't understand why people make such a big deal about it.
    Where is the O2?
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, but both of them are called The O2
