Has anyone tried Ubuntu 10.04 yet? How is it coming along?

Still on 9.04. Tried a live disc of 9.10 but a few things put me off. Mainly the new software centre. From my time messing around with the disc it appeared that i could only install one piece of software at a time? I really wanted to see how the ext 4 file system worked but i was put off and to be fair, i've had no problems with Jaunty. I would be curious to hear what everyone thinks of 10.04 though as it being a long term release i may just switch over if its good enough. Anyone have any opinions on this yet? How are the alphas coming along?

Beta 1 is out. I have only heard good things (really good things) about 10.04. Can't wait for it myself.

Been using it for 2 weeks, seems stable, don't use gnome so can't comment on many of the new features

What desktop are you using? XFCE, LXDE, KDE4(gasp)

DWM, it's a small tiling window manager

Heard about problems with the Nvidia drivers.... so I'm holding off upgrading until they're fixed. Used it on another machine however, and was delighted by it.

Been running for a week now without any major problems, Seems to be a problem with some packages but haven't run into anything critical so far. Very quick boot times too.

Yep exactly my case too. Holding out until the nvidia drivers are properly sorted :)

Had slight trouble with my backlight control (nvidia g105m). Solved using one line in my xorg.conf

Is there anything new and useful in it (obviously that's highly subjective)?

There's the new GNOME themes (and accompanying logos), which are a much needed improvement, in my opinion. First impressions count for a lot, and you can't just whip open a terminal and start throwing out commands to try and impress new-commers!! So I think aesthetics are very important, and the two new themes beat the ugly Humanity theme hands down.

Of course, there were a few complaints that the close/minimize/maximize buttons moved from the top right to the top left. The latest beta has changed the order of the buttons, but they're still on the left side.

I stumbled upon a very good GUI program that can easily customize the ordering of the buttons. I think it would be great if this was incorporated into the Themes control box.

ubuntu-tweak lets you change buttons from left to right with one click also,
can be installed very easily from a deb file on their site, awesome powerful system tool !

I tried it on a Dell Inspiron recently, didn't like it.
A lot of applications kept crashing and there was 350MBs of updates, and I missed my Minty touches (Menus and little gui features), think I'll wait for Mint 9, roflcopters.

It is a only a beta; the final version is coming in 16 days or. It's normal that there would be issues in beta releases. :)

Did you report the bugs ?

If not then they might not get fixed and mint 9 will inherit them, and you are back to that square with a unique number.

A new OS with lots of updates
[inset comment about living under a rock if you think this isn't normal :p]

Oh yeah release is scheduled for the 29th

I wouldn't consider a theme as an addition to a distro. You can add themes any time you like.
Anyone find anything really handy in t?

It makes an enormous difference for new users and for the marketing though.

Probably the addition of Gwibber would be a big deal for the social networking types, though it's not my kind of thing.

There's a Nautilus Scripts Manager and Nautilus Actions Configurator, which might turn out to be handy.

There are some subtle changes in the Ubuntu Software Centre, which makes it much easier to install Flash and other 3rd party stuff. I'm very happy with Firefox and Flash, it all works flawlessly and fast.

Boot time is significantly faster on my machine, though I guess your mileage may vary.

It's also got IBUS Preferences manager, which is good for Far Eastern languages.

Sound is working good with my games as well, Pulse Audio was a bit of a mess on 9.10, they seem to have done a lot of work on that.

From what I can see it's shaping up to be a very solid, stable release and a worthy LTS version.

    .

If the basics of sound and video worked it would be a major boon. The rest is pointless fluff.

I've a problematic broadband issue with my linux box. results in slower internet access. Thinking of updating to the beta now in the idea that it will make updating to the full release a bit easier.

Does that make any sense or will updating from the beta to the full rlease take as long anyway?

It does yeah. I think they're fairly close to release now so there (hopefully) wont be too many package changes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭Stuxnet

they are in release candidate now,
its been rock solid since alpha, i can honestly say, i haven't had one headache testing this version, (gnome) absolutely brilliant
    boots in under 20 seconds ! :D

It's awesome, I'd recommend reading Omg! Ubuntu! for updates on all the new features. Nautilus doesn't have the button to change breadcrumbs into folder path anymore though, that was handy for grabbing directory paths for terminal :(

Update broke the machine I'm testing this one... though an older version of the kernel still boots and runs reliabily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭OctavarIan

Lovely long update manager install coming later when I get home :D

I'll be quite happy if it doesn't break anything, but not devestated because it's only a Wubi install.

just installed the final version and seems fine so far , had network problems with the rc and betas but they seem to be fixed , still had to disable ivp6 in firefox but apart from that no other problems so far.

This link seems to work however they don't seem to have updated their homepage yet.

This seems to be the final build as it was updated today:

It appears that there is a Grub issue that may cause a release delay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,258 ✭✭✭MrVestek

I can't get this to install properly at all.

First I had an issue with the installer not starting up correctly which turned out to be a conflict with my floppy drive.

Disabled the drive in the BIOS but now the installer hangs after I select my keyboard layout and doesn't go any further although it does seem to trash my HDDs about for one reason or another.

I've tried booting without splash and I've tried nomodeselect as various forums suggested but no luck.

It's a pity as it seems like a nice new release too as I'm posting from a live session as we speak.

I downloaded the one from your link and it installed no problem. Used LiLi USB Creator to put it on a USB stick and boot.

If you download an unofficial release, that is, if you don't get the link officially from Ubuntu.com after an announcement, there is no guarantee it will work whatsoever.

It must be stressed, too, that downloading early only delays the release: when their servers are under pressure it will be harder to ensure eveything has synced properly.

That's the one I downloaded though. It was the official ISO but from one of their mirror servers is all.

Apparently I'm not the only one with the issue I'm having atm.

Also for some strange reason my BIOS doesn't support booting from USB :-/

It's probably not. The ISO's were "re spun" asfaik, because a pretty large error regarding GRUB reared its face a the last moment. If I were you I'd download it again.

Yeah I took that advice. The installer also seemed to have a pretty big bug in it that made the partition manager go into an infinate loop.

Proper full release has installed successfully for me now though... although for some reason I don't get a proper boot splash.

Ugh, again it won't upgrade correctly from CD despite the 10.04 disc being listed at the top of the list. They really need to fix this, pisses me off every time.

Thinking of taking the linux plunge and replacing a Vista machine with 10.04.

    Wish me luck!

Actually, I'm wrong. First it spends a few hours downloading most of the files, then gripes at me to insert the CD to copy 3 off of it. I think I preferred it when it just ignored it completely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭Tobias Greeshman

Updated it through the upgrade feature on the 9.04 install I had earlier. Overall I'm not so sure, still trying to get used to it. The window buttons moved to the left is a little annoying, and I've had it freeze/hang during boot up, which I think could be this bug.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

The window buttons moved to the left is a little annoying,

I presume that's just a feature of the default theme. I've had the buttons on the left for some time now with a modified gtkrc file. Try switching to another theme to see if they jump back, otherwise you'll have to hack the config file (and I think the new release should have an editor for this). It's quite a significant UI change to foist on users without asking them though - typical Canonical arrogance, IMO.

It's just the ambiance theme, the other themes switch the buttons back to the right.
