few old scores to settle. this league will be very hard ,we have played most of these before, so we know what is ahead. huge task to win this one, especially our friends at ss rovers and roys rovers.

Nice fixture list if it stays as is.

No really early games and only two late ones.

I'm a hundred per cent certain it will change

A few games in Knocklyon on a nicer pitch wouldn't go amiss.

    Is that a possibility?

    Nope, all games at Wesley

    Boardeaux in Division 8

Tough league, we know half these teams from before. No excuses though, this has to be the season we push on and put in a real title challenge.

I've put up a sticky thread for the fixtures/results as I usually do.

We can keep this thread for general discussion during the season.

As usual there will be a separate thread created for each match.

This is Boardeaux's 8th season, and I just want to say congratulations to Jules and Cathal who have been with us since the very start. Well done lads.

If we win medals this season, that will mean Boardeaux has won medals in half it's time of existence, so let's push for that, and let me complete my medal collection.

I'm just in the final stages of completing the squad, I can tell you what the make up of it will be.

I don't want to see comments in this thread about "that's too many" or anything like that, if you have any concerns/questions please direct them to myself or Michael privately, we will listen and take any suggestions on board.

    1 GK
    2 RB
    2 LB
    4 CH
    4 CM
    4 Wing
    4 FWD

Now, I just want to make it clear that nobody is entitled to a place in the starting XI on any particular week, of course I can only pick 11 players, but we have a good mix of lads here that I think can do a variety of jobs for the team in different circumstances.

    I'll expand on that slightly.

I've picked one keeper, because we have a very good one already, wouldn't be fair to have a lad on the bench for the season. If Clay is ever unavailable, we have a fairly decent pool of ex-goalkeepers, fellas from other teams who've filled in at times and fellas in the squad who can do a good job in there.

It should be obvious why I've included two specialist full backs for each side. Someone may have an off day, may not be available for some reason etc, and we have a lad available who is used to playing that position, and we don't have to sacrifice from another position.

I've included 4 centre backs. Each with their own strengths, which will help us a lot. Some can deal better with high balls in, some can play out of defence and start passing moves from deep etc etc. I will be using the Centre Backs as the situation calls for it.

4 wingers are included because the situation exists where we can roll-on roll-off subs. The more speedy, strong wingers we have in the squad, the fresher we can keep that aspect of our game. It has worked for us in the past, and will continue to work in the future. If a winger doesn't start, it is almost 100% guaranteed that they will get a good amount of game time anyway.

Again, 4 central midfielders, all capable of doing a different job. Some are more defensively minded, which we may need at times, others are always looking to get up the pitch, and attack from the middle. Again, different circumstances call for slightly different measures.

Now onto the strikers. I realise that 4 may seem a bit much, and maybe it is, it was the only position I was unsure of how many I wanted to pick players for. I chose to go with three players who were already in the squad, because I know they are very good players and will score goals. The fourth striker was included because I saw something in him that I think would be very useful to us over the course of a season, and I also think, given my 7 seasons of watching games, that a player of his type will definitely score goals in this league.

That is 20 outfield players, and it may seem a lot on Tuesday when there are ten lads on the sideline, but believe me, when it gets to June/July and the holiday season, we'll be glad of the squad size.

I will post the full squad in the first match thread on Sunday evening, that gives me time to finalise the finer points, and just make sure everyone is included in the text group and things like that.

I believe that this group of players is good enough to win a league, you all have to believe that too.

i just want to add 2 points, one is just an extension of what des said -

for the new players, next week we could have up to 18 players, thats alot of subs. patience is they key. if you dont get on, wait your chance. it may not come in week 1, or week 2 or week 3, but normally, if you are good enough, you will get your chance. there will be days when we only have 11 or 12 and you will get a chance to shine, then its up to you to take it and put your hand up for a starting place. theres no excuse really for anybody.

and this will be a really hard league. last few years, we thought we would walk it and always ended up short. this year is different, we face a huge task. must win every game.

    The tinkering begins :p.

Also I would say to all the new lads try to be active on the forum, it's good to get everyones view point rather than the just the usual lads.

Woodbine on Tuesday. Any previous history with them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,357 ✭✭✭emc2

no but they could be a team that changed their name, it happens from time to time.

Think they've been around a while. Not encountered them before. Finished 8th in Tuesday league in winter.

A similar though cross my mind too the first time I saw the fixture list!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

Ffs, toughest league ever then?? Some effort to win this lads, Ketamine were the best team we've ever played I reckon just couldn't score goals. We could finish top or 6th this season, it'll be tight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,028 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

Yeh it's a tough league for sure. Roys Rovers have won the league at least 2 of the previous 3 seasons I think, if not 3, so you do wonder why they've not moved up a division or is that not the way it works?

Anyway, suffice to say that there should be very little risk of there being any complacency starting out in this league, which is something I think we were a little guilty of going into last season. We are just one of at least 5 teams that will be hoping to challenge for this league so it'll be a battle every week.

You just pick what league you want. No enforced promotion.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,346 ✭✭✭✭homerjay2005

so ketamine are in our league. 3-3 draw with ss rovers tonight. also, a 2-2 draw for roys rovers. looks like the deritivos or how ever its spelt are pat fc.

f*ck me, this is the strongest league weve ever been in. hopefully, everybody keeps taking points off each other and no one team stands out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

Why do you think they're Pat FC? Tough isn't the word for it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

    19:00 WES2 Glenwood Rovers ?-v-? Derivativos!
    19:15 WES1 Finsbury United 2-v-2 Roys Rovers
20:15 WES1 Templeogue Astros -v- Fabulous Benedictine Monks
    21:15 WES1 MDMA Moscow 3-v-3 SS Rovers
    21:15 WES2 Boardeaux 4-v-0 Woodbine

Blessed lads that MDMA drew 3-3. I think they went 3-2 down from a deflection (judging by the quietness by their entourage), equalised and absolutely battered the goal in the final few minutes hitting the post and from just one corner, five clearances off the line at close range in a row. Miracle.

    A good miracle :)

i maybe wrong, but if you look at the league table from last season, theres a strange name in 2nd place and if i remember correctly, its that. so looks like pat left them and they changed their name. another quality side.but maybe we are better off that way? the last 3 seasons, its been us v one other quality team and we ended up 2nd best. its amazing how all the good teams are in our league this year. but all we can do is concentrate on our own game, take one game at a time, pick up as many points as we can and let the others beat each other. last night went perfect for us with other results, but its only one night, we need 5 or 6 more like that.
