    What's the story there?

All she does is scream into the microphone. Is this singing these days?

I don't know, but I'm friggin sick of them/her. It's on everywhere. I have also announced this on Facebook, so you all know I am serious

I think she's fantastic and the album is absolutely brilliant, though no surprises to hear that it's being overplayed in Ireland. Same thing happens with many bands unfortunately and it kills them for a lott of people.

    +1

But just because something gets played to death on the radio doesn't mean people have to stop liking, those I don't like them any more since they became popular people really annoy me.

I just don't like things I hear too much of. I didn't even hear of them before the o2 ad but I really get sick of hearing things over and over again. It's on tv all the time and every feckin station, especially 'Phantom Oh we're so feckin great, we played them before they were popular but we are still playing their songs every hour FM'

This group is way over-rated to be honest. Says alot about the current state of the music industry.

Saw them opening for Blur in Hyde Park last year, just thought she was trying really hard to be Patti Smith and not succeeding very well. Haven't heard anything since to change my mind.

I don't like her particularly but she can sing.

Although you do get kudos for your grumpy granddad type comment. ;)

It's not their fault that the marketing machine decided to go to town on them. Their job is making music, and apparently they did it pretty successfully. I don't have the album, I've only heard the stuff that's really popular in shops and things, but it seems pretty decent from the snippets I remember.

And if you're the type of person who starts hating music after hearing it being overplayed, don't listen to the radio! I don't listen to the radio, so when something starts getting overplayed, I choose not to play it ;)

some of her stuff is good. But over hyped and over played beyond belief. You got the love cover and the subsequent You got the love mix with Dizzy didnt actually do her any favours either.

The album isn't amazing but it's pretty good considering it's their/her debut?

Is Florence and the Machine a group or a person? I noticed they were mentioned as both at different award ceremonies.

The 'You Got The Love' cover is fantastic imo

Its okay. just dont know why they had to release the version with Dizzy. talk about overkill

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,466 ✭✭✭tim_holsters

Florence has a fantastic voice, she can hardly be blamed for the overkill.

Florence Welch is the redheaded chick at the centre of it, the bunch of musicians backing her up is "the machine" bit. She writes the songs and all, they just play 'em.

And fair enough if they aren't your bag or whatever, and yes, they've been overplayed to all hell, but she's one of the very few artists charting at the minute who can genuinely sing. "Screaming", my arse, her voice is amazing.

It's Florence Welch and a number of different musicians who contribute to different tracks/performances

By the way I've been listening to Florence for an age and still can't get enough although that Dizzie Rascal collaboration was absolute dirt, don't blame her though

She has an amazing voice but is just so damn annoying. I can see the quality in it like I can see and respect the quality in an operatic singers voice but I jsut dont like it. She sounds liek a whingey cat! Musically not really great either nothign new that we havnt heard a million times before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭actua11

The same couple of songs are seriously overplayed (probably seen as a safe choice), but not her fault. As for her singing, she was on other voices on rte a few weeks back acoustically and her voice definitely stands up well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 97 ✭✭cinnamon girl

Can I just point out that my lack of interest in her music has nothing to do with her being overplayed. I don't listen to the radio, I have no idea what's being played at all much less overplayed. I just haven't liked anything I've heard of hers including seeing an entire live set.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 407 ✭✭OxfordComma

I have mixed feelings on her/them/whatever.

Dog Days and Cosmic Love are great songs in my opinion, but Kiss with a Fist isn't great, and I absolutely hate You've Got the Love. I just think it's an awful song.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 471 ✭✭nipps

Ah the music might be slightly overrated, but it's still quite catchy.

I also find her rather attractive... This may colour my opinions slightly. :o

That cover came way too early after Candi Staton's radio re-release, really didn't see the point in it.

Would love to see her perform in a mellow acoustic situation as her stadium/anthemic/operatic voice doesn't help her music at all, really wanna tell her to calm down and chill out. fair enough her voice is distinctive but not in a positve way.

great vid jill.shows how well she can use and control the power in her voice, that stripped back acoustic set up completely changes her persona

I think Florence has an amazing voice, the passion really shines through on a song like Cosmic Love. I'd much prefer to listen to the likes of Florence + The Machine on the radio than Cheryl Cole.

He never said that. I, while i don't agree with him, can understand his point. I don't think i've ever seen a funny woman comedian, i'd say there's one out there but as yet i ain't laughing. Oh, nearly forgot:rolleyes:

I listen to far more female solo artists/fronted bands than I do male.

She has potential to be great. Songs like Cosmic Love show there's something interesting about her, but the album overall is a bit of a bum note. It feels like it was rushed or something and could have been better. I got bored with it very quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,090 ✭✭✭jill_valentine

I kind of agree with that. I find the album kinda frustrating overall because of it, there's little bits and pieces of awesomeness, but it doesn't make the most of them. I enjoy the couple of singles - as overplayed as they are - and live, she's really something, but I wish the album was strong enough to do her justice.

Anyhoo, she did a cover of Beirut's very lovely Postcards From Italy a while back. I suspect it won't win her any new fans, but if you like either Florence or Beirut already it's a treat.

    .

maybe she has no more songs so she needs to stay in the news by doing some covers?

The whole thing just snowballed. It was originally just a b-side. It then got released as a digital download due to it's popularity. After that it got added to Lungs as a bonus track. And again its popularity led to a physical re-release. It's not her fault people liked her song.

Her early covers were all excellent. Her version of Cold War Kids 'Hospital Beds' is cracking imo.

Think she is very reliant on that voice and her sound. Some good songs but question is how long she can sustain it.

When you mentioned this, I decided to hunt it down, because despite being a bit on the fence about the album, I love her voice and that song. I'm actually surprised I was disappointed by it. It just seemed hollow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 900 ✭✭✭Joe_Dull

I bought Lungs with high hopes, but it's really a (very) long road of mediocre filler with potholes of genius... Rabbit Heart, Cosmic Love and Howl I could listen to all day, but apart from that it all blends into one for me. In fact I find a few quite painful, Kiss with a Fist, Dog Days, You've Got the Love (harmonies sound wrong). Girl with One Eye is actually one of my least favourite songs full stop :p When Florence's voice works, it really works. Pity it doesn't stand up on most of the tracks. I haven't heard much of her on Phantom recently though? Thank God, Dog Days seems to have replaced by the brilliant Bubbles by Biffy Clyro :)

Surprised by that but fair enough. I much prefer Florences' version compared to CWKs original.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,090 ✭✭✭jill_valentine

Excellent. Then it's agreed. Florence should hire a better songwriter and maybe do a few less overplayed covers.

Somebody send the telex, and we'll all go forward from here.

"waaaaaiilll *rob someones song and do a collaboration* Waaaaaillll somemore. "
Oh yes this is singing. not to mention when she hits the real HIGH notes! My god I can't stand her! she is the joe duffy of the music part of radio... an annoying noise that never seems to go away...

*mods note; not attacking joe duffy. Just good metaphor. Will edit if told to*

I have a problem with her You've Got The Love overplayed. It's my least favorite song from Lungs, mostly because it's the last one and the rest of the album is a masterpiece, then that cover comes on...It's pretty much the same song, she didn't do anything interesting with it except scream. At least the Dizzie version added a bit more.
It's not even part of the album it's a bonus song! Ah well, at least that 02 ad with Cosmic Love ALWAYS plays at the cinema, a much better song imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,167 ✭✭✭Notorious

I have to say, I like Florence and the Machine. I got the album for the o/h around Christmas and we both thought it was a good album all round. Except for her cover of "You've Got the Love". I've heard quite a few people saying that is amazing. It isn't.

In my opinion, if you're doing a cover of a song you have to put your own mark on it by changing things around, not just re-release a carbon copy of the original. Where's the creativity there? You're literally just copying someone elses song. Why bother if it's not going to be any different from the original version?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 82 ✭✭Waterloo Sunset

Clearly we all need to attend her next Ireland gig and stage an intervention! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

What's the big deal with Florence covering a song? You'd swear noone had covered a song before the way it's been received, yes it's been overplayed and yes it dosen't add anything else from the original but to hate her for this is ridiculous. The album is really, really good and the cover dosen't take anything away from the album, it not actually being on the album in the first place.
